The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF) has been identified as one of the "10 most endangered national forests" in the country. If the cutting rate goes unchecked, the logging in CNNF will result in extinction of key species,

Stop the 11 Fast Food Junkies!

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/248652372?z00m=14773284

The forests of the American South are being cut down to meet the fast food industry's hunger for brand-centered wrappers, boxes, and cups. Consider that last year:

  • The average American ate fast food 150 times, and generated 300 pounds of packaging waste.
  • Americans used 15 billion disposable hot beverage cups.
  • 32 percent of the domestic waste stream consisted of containers and packaging.

There are 11 fast food industry giants, including McDonald's, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, KFC , and Taco Bell, that are big buyers of paper packaging from the forests of the Southern United States.

NoFreeRefills.orgNoFreeRefills.org

These forests are the worlds' largest paper producing region, and as a result, 43 millions of acres of forests have been converted into sterile, row-crop like pine plantations. The U.S. Forest Service states that nearly one out of every five acres of Southern forests is now pine plantations.

It's time for the fast food companies to clean up their wrappers! Protect our forests from the 11 Fast Food Junkies!

Protect Wilderness for Everyone
The Senate is currently considering a wilderness bill that includes many important provisions for protecting and preserving America's public lands heritage.

Hi Elizabeth,

The assaults on our public lands by this administration just never seem to end.

Idaho marks the third major attempt at loosening restrictions on roadless areas. A national rulemaking will decide the fate of more than 9.3 million acres of roadless areas in Idaho's national forests - part of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem.

Please send the U.S. Forest Service your comment opposing this plan. >>

These acres of Idaho are currently protected under the 2001 Roadless Rule, but the proposed rulemaking would remove these protections and could open the door to mining, logging, oil and gas drilling as well as other development.

Over the years, the Bush administration has continually attempted to repeal this popular policy - with little success - because Americans, like you, stood tall and took action.

The U.S. Forest Service is currently accepting public comments on the Idaho proposed rule. Please sign the petition today and make your letter more powerful by leaving a personalized comment. >>

Thank you for helping to protect our roadless lands.

shale and tar sands development in America's West.

Thank you for helping to save our last western wildlife habitats
from destructive development.

Please go to
http://www.savebiogems.org/yellowstone/takeaction
and tell the Bush administration to protect these sensitive
wildlands for future generations and promote cleaner sources of
energy instead.

Oil shale is rock that produces oil when heated to extreme
temperatures. Tar sands contain extremely heavy oil mixed with
sand and clay. Tar sands development in Canada has displaced
wildlife, created toxic waste sites that go on for miles and
generated three times the amount of global warming pollution per
barrel produced as conventional fuel.

We must act now to shield our own western wildlands from this
nightmare scenario. Oil shale and tar sands development could
release dangerous toxic elements such as arsenic, selenium, and
boron into the Colorado River watershed -- a vital source of
drinking water for local communities.

This area is also home to mule deer, elk, mountain lions, black
bears, bald eagles and great horned owls and offers exceptional
outdoor recreation opportunities

Action of the Month

Run-Down Refuges

Highly endangered red wolves in North Carolina’s Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, endangered manatees in Florida’s Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge and hundreds of other species across the country make their home in U.S. Wildlife Refuges.

Yet, refuges across the country have downsized wildlife biologists, refuge managers and other staff, slipped into disrepair...and even closed their gates to the public for lack of funds.

Help preserve wildlife refuges in your state and around America. Urge your U.S. Representative and Senators to support adequate funding for the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Take Action

In 1999, President Clinton stood in the shade of a giant sequoia grove and signed a proclamation creating Giant Sequoia National Monument, carving it out of Sequoia National Forest. With the current administration, things have been quite different.

In the past few years there have been numerous attempts by the Bush administration to open the Giant Sequoia National Monument to logging. It's time this area was truly protected so these attacks will stop for good. >>

The Sierra Club has listed the Giant Sequoia National Monument as one of the 52 most important places to protect in the next 10 years. These magnificent forests provide essential habitat for the California spotted owl, Pacific fisher, and myriad other plants and animals.

But the Forest Service has periodically called for extensive logging of this natural cathedral, under the guise of fire protection.

Please sign the petition today to bring real protection to the Giant Sequoia National Monument. >>

PREVENT CREATION OF WORLDS LARGEST TOXIC LAKE 4:55 AM

Your help is needed to prevent the creation of the worlds largest toxic lake. The dam built to hold the toxic sludge from Pebble Mine in Alaska will be taller than the Seattle space needle. The area where this will be built is subject to earthquakes. Salmon runs that are 10s of thousands of year old will be gone for good along with all the wildlife that depend on them.

If ever there was an environmental issue you should get involved with, this is it.

An important time is coming up in the Alaska legilature in just a couple of months. The petition has a long way to go.

Tazmanian Old-Growth Forest being destroyed! December 23, 2007 9:18 AM

Tazmania is clearfelling its native, old-growth forests at an
astonishing rate and this continued destruction is affecting so
much as a result. The true story of Tazmania's logging Industry
is both devistating and unbelievable! Protected species are NOT
being protected as forests are totally eradicated; complete
felling of the area followed by the dropping of napalm means no
life can continue to survive. The Government is
allowing this, both through political corruption and continued
funding (bribery) by the logging Industries, to happen.

Please sign the petition and (hopefully) help...

Act now to Protect the Northern Rockies!
The Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act (NREPA), introduced by Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) would provide long-lasting protection for this historic territory and the wildlife that reside there. The Act uses a unique combination of time-tested tools and visionary new proposals to protect and restore 20 million acres, including the creation of migration corridors vital for wildlife populations threatened by global warming.  [ send green star]

ORIGINAL POST BY TANJA E.
Global warming is melting the Arctic at an alarming rate. This summer the Arctic ice cover was the smallest ever recorded. As a result, there really is a race on to grab up the oil, gas and other resources once protected by ice.

And the more oil and gas we burn, the faster the Arctic melts and the closer our planet comes to catastrophic climate change.

Sign the petition to save the Arctic from exploitation and military activity at http://www.greenpeace.org/handsoffthearctic
