Kachin National Organization Political Pronouncement

1.    The 2010 General election is not about enfranchisement or the right to liberty for our people and we strongly urge to stage a rigorous opposition to it.

2.    The downfall of Burma is directly related to its abnegation of human rights and the depravation of equality, rights and privileges to the ethnic minorities that prevented, what we want, from building a genuine Federal Union under true democracy.

3.    In order to go forward with political process, the incarcerated political leaders must first be released from jail, and the on-going annihilation military campaign against the minorities must cease. These preconditions and willingness to engage in tripartite dialogue are the only solution to creating a new Constitution.

4.    The 2008 SPDC Constitution does not address the issues of equal rights nor any legal ramifications with the deliberate aim of rushing to put forth for 2010 election in order to justify the need to continue unchallenged military rule. The flawed Constitution offers neither freedom of choice nor opportunity to make our lives better. Furthermore, the provision stipulated in (9/c) is a warning that the Kachins stand to lose the landmark names of places, their cultural heritage and racial identity. A threatening article in (20/c) is a statement of empowerment to forfeit any given rights by the State and to make it insurmountable to make democracy workable in 2010 and beyond.

5.    We invoke the proclaimed oath of our premier organization KIA at N’Ba Pa, Bhamo district on January 10, 1962 that stated the resolve to go forward until the inherent rights of equality and freedom and that of self-determination are secured. To that end the organization must retain its arms and be ever ready to confront and combat the unscrupulous enemy, and to resist the diversionary ploy of being converted to BGF, and stay firm in leading our people to the goal of liberation.

6.    To those organizations which have opted for BGF, we plead with you from underselling our people at any cost. We trust that an opportune time will come to switch back to the side of the people.

7.    Now is the time we cannot be indecisive in directing attention to the downfall and demise of the military rule. We invite all who are looking for a brighter future to join and be united with us in this historic battle.
