FDA Bans BPA in Baby Bottles, Sippy Cups
On July 18, the US Food and Drug Administration voted to ban bisphenol A, or BPA, from baby bottles and children's sippy cups after acknowledging that it might affect "the brain, behavior and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children." *More than 75,000 Care2 members signed several petitions to demand this crucial action! Santa Monica Mountain Lion Shooting Leads to Policy Changes 
After shooting and killing a mountain lion who wandered into a courtyard, the Santa Monica Police Department announced that it will be changing its policies and protocols when it comes to dealing with wild animals. Urban Decay Gets Cruelty-Free Status Back
Urban Decay, a well-known cosmetics company with cruelty-free and vegan products, announced a plan to expand its line in China where animal testing is required. After listening to criticism from animal advocates, the company has since reconsidered its plan and stated that it won’t be making any such move until it can do so without any animal testing involved. FOUR PAWS Team Rescues Cub from Cruel Fate
Thanks to compassionate animal lovers in Ukraine, a bear cub has been rescued from the cage where she was being kept for the entertainment of Euro 2012 visitors. With the support of Ukrainian authorities, FOUR PAWS found and rescued Nastia. Read more.
Leatherback Turtles Protected In Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico's governor signed a law protecting 1,950 acres of state-owned land from large-scale development. The new reserve makes up 66 percent of what is known as the Northeast Ecological Corridor and is considered one of the prime nesting sites for the endangered leatherback turtle. Read more.
Forage Fish Protected in the Pacific
The Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) will develop new regulations to protect forage fish. Many of these unmanaged forage species may be unfamiliar to the general public, but they are crucial food sources for ocean wildlife and play a critical role in the overall health of the ocean's ecosystem. Chevron to Pay $19 Billion for Environmental Damage
Chevron has been ordered by an Ecuadorian court to pay more than $19 billion in environmental damages. Chevron deliberately dumped more than 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater into the rainforest. The contamination devastated the homes of some 30,000 indigenous people. Read more.

Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a landmark decision upholding the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The individual mandate, in addition to other provisions - including those that enhance Medicare - was ruled constitutional.
