Act Now to Save San Francisco's Natural Areas August 01, 2006 12:02 PM

The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the world's greatest biological treasures. It is home to dozens of unique wildlife and plant species, many found nowhere else on Earth. Unfortunately, many of these species are on the brink of extinction, and the precarious status of San Francisco's wildlife and plants has become a topic of global concern.

Only a tiny fraction of the native forests and open spaces are preserved in the Bay Area today, but there is currently an opportunity to ensure such places are protected for generations to come. San Francisco’s Natural Areas Program is a bold plan to expand parkland protection, and your help is urgently needed to help make sure it becomes a reality!

USA's Declaration of Independence from Fossil Fuels August 01, 2006 12:43 PM

We endorse the The United States of America's Declaration of Independence from Fossil Fuels Petition to President Bush and Vice President Cheney. To: President Bush and Vice President Cheney

There comes a time when a country's citizens must choose not to degrade
the national and world environment that belongs to their descendants.
There comes a time when they must choose, as a nation, to no longer
promote and utilize fossil fuels as their primary energy source.

We, the undersigned, declare that this change has begun and must
continue until the United States finally develops energy technologies
that are truly sustainable.

As conscientious and far-sighted people, under God, we believe fossil
fuels cannot continue to be the primary source of energy for our
society. Fossil fuels pollute our environment and force us to depend on other nations to sustain our energy needs. Extracting fossil fuels from
the earth destroys delicate and precious ecosystems. Burning fossil
fuels for energy emits into our atmosphere chemicals that pollute and
disrupt the natural chemical balances of our earth causing various
environmental problems such as global warming.

In signing this Declaration, we accept that global warming is a
reality. We accept that ours is the generation that must make
significant changes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (especially that of carbon dioxide) and deal with other environmental problems so that
future generations can enjoy a sustainable earth.

We will work towards eliminating fossil fuels from our society by:

1. establishing an aggressive plan to cut gross personal and business
energy use by identifying and adopting economically justified energy
efficiency,

2. replacing our dependence on fossil fuels with renewable energy* that
do not pollute our environment, as they become practical,

3. educating our people to the importance of these changes, and

4. insisting that our government embrace and support these changes through the following means:

a) funding research and development of renewable energy technologies as a national priority,

b) offering tax incentives to promote efficiency and renewable energy sources,

c) identifying and removing barriers to efficiency and sustainable energy technologies, and

d) requiring all public institutions to be constructed as energy
efficient and equipped with the best available renewable energy
technology that is practical.

*Note: Due to the environmental problems associated with nuclear
energy, the undersigned do not define nuclear energy as a renewable or
sustainable energy source.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Save the Mangroves at Bimini August 03, 2006 3:30 AM

Save the mangrove!
Save the lemon sharks!
Save the future of this beautiful island!

The island of Bimini, portrayed in Hemingway’s Island in the Streams, is a tropical paradise that supports an abundance of life, but the island and its culture are at risk from developers.

The developers of the Bimini Bay Resort are cutting down, filling-in and destroying the rich mangrove ecosystem of the island. They are destroying the very habitats on which Bimini's biological richness and true economy depend.

Bimini possesses the only mangrove ecosystem on the entire Northwest Bahama Bank, and is responsible for replenishing fish populations not only in Bimini but over thousands of square miles of coral reefs and seabed. Today countless species of fish, rays, sponges, lobsters, and birds fill their unique niche in this ecosystem. But Bimini Bay Resort and Hilton are in the process of destroying all this pristine beauty and irreplaceable habitat by building a sprawling golf course, condos, a casino and a marina.

Please help by signing the petition below. Thanks!!

Our oceans are in serious decline. Overfishing, marine habitat destruction, coastal development, and pollution are pushing our ocean systems to the brink of collapse.

Urge your Representative to support strong marine protections. Ocean fisheries have significant effects on ocean ecosystems and are integral to national and coastal economies. That's why these activities have to be carefully managed.

In recent years, two national commissions have recommended strengthening marine protections. However, no action has been taken by the Federal Government to address this growing problem. Rather than building on the strengths of the current law, Congress is considering weakening longstanding safeguards, which would increase serious environmental threats to ocean fish and marine ecosystems.

Congress needs to know that we care about the health of our oceans and want them to oppose efforts to weaken marine protections.

Oil and Gas Leasing Would Damage Alaska's Teeming Teshekpuk Lake Region
Planned lease sale threatens waterfowl, caribou, native lifestyles

Over the strong objections of Native people, wildlife biologists, sportsmen’s groups, and the general public, the Bureau of Land Management remains intent on leasing one of the most remarkable wetlands complexes on the planet. The place is the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A), the largest single block of wild public land left in the United States.

We need your help in urging the new Interior Secretary to postpone the oil and gas lease sale for this fragile area that is now set for late September.

Protect Pennsylvania's Wilderness
Allegheny National Forest Proposal Recommends Too Little Wilderness
Please send a letter to the Forest Service today

The Allegheny National Forest, Pennsylvania’s only national forest, is home to some great wild country and unique areas, including the largest tract of old-growth forest between the Great Smoky Mountains and the Adirondacks. Only a small fraction of the Allegheny is now protected permanently in the National Wilderness Preservation System.

The future of this special forest is very much a stake today. The Forest Service is proposing a long-term management plan that recommends too little wilderness and doesn’t do enough to protect the plants, animals and recreation opportunities most people care about. You can change that! Please take a moment to send the letter below to the agency asking for more wilderness protection and safeguards for our fish and wildlife habitats and wildland recreation.

Three Montana Wild Forests Need Your Help!
Please help us urge the Forest Service to protect all the wilderness-quality lands on the Bitterroot, Flathead, and Lolo National Forests.

The Forest Service is concurrently revising the long-term management plans for three large and exceptional National Forests in western Montana, the Bitterroot, Flathead, and Lolo, home to clear running mountain streams, serene backcountry, and incredible wildlife. Each of these National Forests has thousands of acres of wilderness-quality lands that are home to quiet trails, wildlife habitat, and pristine landscapes.

The bad news is that many of these wilderness-quality acres are at risk from the draft Forest Service plans. The good news is that you can help. Please take a minute and ask the Forest Service to protect the wilderness-quality lands in these three forests. The deadline for public comments is September 7th.

Make clearcutting illegal

clear cutting is the destructive unsustainable practice of clearing forests of all trees in order to produce more product and yield more profits for timber corporations.  This destroys the lives of millions of animals, birds, reptiles, and amphibains,  It also creats situations for massive landslide which kill hundreds of people and creats pollution and sediment runoff that pollutes our rivers and our oceans.  The forest never really grows back and if it does beat those odds, then it will eventually choke itself out and die.  Some of these corporations say that they replant trees.  do not believe the hype.  They only plant certain trees that they want to harvest, which eliminates any biodiversity and creats a bigger threat for wild fires.  In fact some companies and the forestry service often say that by clearcutting they reduce the risk of big wild fires.  but since they reduce the numbers of bigger tress and the old natural biodiversity it actually creats bigger and more intense wildfires then would have happened naturally.

We can tell them to stop raping our natural lands and if we speak out then our kids and grandkids might just be able to experience and enjoy our natural environment.  if we dont stop them then we all will suffer immensely

Petition to help protect the Great Bear Rainforest
The Great Bear Rainforest, which is the largest intact coastal rainforest left on earth remains largely unprotected.
There is now a proposed solution, agreed to by industry, environmental groups and communities.
The time has come for the government of British Columbia to protect one third of the region from logging, as has been proposed, and create a new approach to the management of this great and irreplaceable resource.

We urge you to ratify the Great Bear Rainforest concensus solutions that were negotiated with the First Nations.
These agreements are the result of tireless negotiations over many years, which involved diverse groups and stakeholders.
The agreements require action from you in three areas, noteably:

*Formal and permanent protection from logging for one third of the region.
*Implementation of an ecosystem based management.
*Matching contributed funds to diversify local economies and broaden businesses in this area.

Please assure us that the government is taking steps to put these protections in place for the safety of this most rare and endangered forest.

Paper futures of the Great Bear Rainforest show great hope, however, if the government does not take action before September of this year, these proposed solutions may begin to unravel, and those parties who took part in this great negotiation may refuse to speak again, leaving the future of this forest bright only on paper.
Please seize this opportunity and take concrete steps now to assure that the coastal communities reliant upon this forest, the grizzly bear and salmon, and the giant cedar trees remain as living testaments to your efforts.

As soon as September 27, a very special wild place could be sold to the oil and gas industry – unless we act now!

One of the most important wetland complexes in the Arctic, the Teshekpuk Lake region is essential habitat for millions of birds and tens of thousands of caribou. It is also a stunning sweep of landscape, remarkable even in Alaska where a grand scale is the only scale.

Together, we can get the Interior Department to do the only sensible thing: cancel the September 27 sale of this precious public land.

The sale is imminent! Act quickly before it's too late! Sign this petition to stop the sale of the Teshekpuk Lake region.

Preserve Tejon Ranch as a new Natural Park
Please take action today to help preserve southern California's largest and most valuable unprotected natural area, Tejon Ranch.

Located between Los Angeles and Bakersfield near the Interstate 5 "Grapevine," the 271,000-acre Tejon Ranch embodies a diverse, natural California landscape and is home to the critically endangered California condor. From ancient oak groves to forests of Joshua trees and Pinyon pines, Tejon Ranch represents the quintessential California natural landscape. Tejon also contains many Native American cultural and sacred sites and is steeped in California history.

The current property owner, Tejon Ranch Company, is aggressively pursuing construction of a series of large-scale developments that would become the cornerstone for unchecked urban sprawl from Los Angeles to Bakersfield to Lancaster. The developments would carve out Tejon's natural heart, jeopardize the California condor, and bring bulldozers, smog and gridlock to one of southern California's last, relatively untouched rural landscapes.

To preserve Tejon's natural and cultural heritage for future generations, the Center for Biological Diversity is campaigning for the protection of Tejon Ranch as a new National Park or State Park.

Because of its unique natural resources including intact habitats, healthy watersheds, critical wildlife corridors, majestic scenery and unpolluted streams, Tejon Ranch should be the state's highest priority for protection of private wildlands. Located within 40 miles of the largest population center in the state, Tejon Ranch is an ideal location for a new natural park. Please support the purchase and the creation of a 245,000-acre Tejon National Park or State Park, to be managed for wildlife habitat, landscape connectivity and low impact recreation.

Save Remote Panama Rainforest from Hydro Dams

Four proposed hydroelectric dam projects threaten free-flowing rivers, rare tropical species, indigenous cultures and a biologically diverse World Heritage Park in the remote rainforest of western Panama. Promoted by the Panamanian government and major Columbian and U.S. corporations, the dam projects would forever alter the free-flowing rivers of the Changuinola basin.

Rio Teribe begins in the heart of La Amistad Biosphere Reserve in western Panama and flows into Rio Changuinola, where three dams are proposed. Construction of the lowest Changuinola dam alone would biologically deplete over 500 miles of streams. A fourth proposed dam on Rio Bonyic, a major tributary of the Teribe, would permanently impact more than 100 miles of stream habitat. The dams, roads, bridges and power lines slated for construction as part of these projects would devastate unique native fish, impact the entire ecosystem of the Changuinola basin and open this remote jungle for development.

La Amistad Reserve contains Central America's largest intact tropical rainforest, is designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations, and harbors incredible biodiversity including 115 species of fish. Most of the fish in the Teribe and Changuinola Rivers depend on access to the ocean to complete their life cycles. The dams would hinder migration and prevent successful reproduction for fish that migrate downstream to the estuary to spawn or rely on currents to carry eggs or larvae back to the sea. The dams would also flood portions of the territories of the indigenous Naso and Ngobe Tribes, destroying the centerpiece of their cultural and natural heritage.

The Panama National Environmental Authority (ANAM) recently approved flawed Environmental Impact Assessments for the four proposed dams. Please join the growing international movement to protect this ecological jewel of Central America and voice your opposition to the proposed Changuinola and Bonyic Hydroelectric Projects to ANAM.

Guimaras oil spill tragedy in the Philippines September 20, 2006 1:53 PM

i would like to write to you all about the recent oil spill tragedy in Guimaras, Philippines. Guimaras is a tiny island in Southern Philippines known for its rich marine biodiversity, white beaches, mangrove and seaweed plantations.

But on August 11, an oil tanker carrying oil from Petron company sank in Guimaras waters affecting as much as 300 kilometers of coastline, 65,000 hectares of mangrove and seaweed plantations including 26,000 individuals displaced from their homes, most of them fishermen who depend on fishing as their livelihood. More than 900 individuals have been treated from respiratory infections and skin diseases due to exposure from high toxic levels of harmful elements and exposure to oil.

Please help me spread awareness by joining me at  www.saveguimaras.com
Our group does not have a fundraising drive but we want to mobilize other groups/individuals to launch their own fundraising efforts to help Guimaras.

All donations should be coordinated with www.projectsunrise.org. Project sunrise is the government led organization supported by the Canadian Urban institute.

Global warming is melting the Arctic at an alarming rate. This summer the Arctic ice cover was the smallest ever recorded. As a result, there really is a race on to grab up the oil, gas and other resources once protected by ice.

And the more oil and gas we burn, the faster the Arctic melts and the closer our planet comes to catastrophic climate change.

chemicals in our environment January 27, 2008 7:57 PM

"There is a general lack of knowledge regarding the 99% of chemicals (around 100,000 'existing substances') that were placed on the market before 1981. This is because prior to that date, no stringent health and safety tests were needed to market chemicals...While some well-known chemicals, such as asbestos, are already banned, the Commission believes that the rising incidence of diseases such as cancer and leukaemia could be linked to chemicals. Blood tests in humans and animals have shown contamination by known toxic substances, raising questions as to how they enter the body and the extent of the damage that they could cause"

please support our livestock production reduction petition for preserving Earth! March 28, 2009 1:04 PM

Hi all!!

The University of California, San Diego student organization: VEG (Vegetarian Environmentalist Group) is happy to present an online petition which aims to reduce the livestock industry via means of removal of governmental subsidies for livestock farmers as well as implementation of tax for livestock products for their detrimental external social burden on the environment. If you are still unfamiliar with the relationship between livestock production and the environment, I have listed the key facts below. Here is our petition link:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/livestock-production-reduction-for-the-environment

Please support us and help us spread the word! This is definitely an attempt at a baby toward in the right direction!
Thank you!

---UCSD VEG
http://ucsdveg.blogspot.com/

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: SUMMARY OF LIVESTOCK'S IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT

(SOURCE: 2006 UNITED NATIONS FAO REPORT, LIVESTOCK'S LONG SHADOW)
Our current livestock industry is responsible for emitting 37% of all human-induced Methane, 65% of all human-induced Nitrous Oxide, 9% of all human-induced Carbon Dioxide, and 64% of human-induced Ammonia. The Carbon Dioxide equivalent of livestock industry emissions is 18%, which is greater than all transportation combined (transportation CO2 equivalent is 12%). So, we need to decrease the livestock industry along with turning to alternative transportation systems (like biking!!). We cannot just pin global warming on one single source and go from there, all aspects need to adapt to the current climate crisis.

In addition to the greenhouse gas emissions, livestock current needs 36% of the world grain and 74% of the world soy to sustain its industry. If you think about it, this is not sustainable at all in the long run. It is definitely not an efficient usage of world crop supplies.

Now let’s talk water. Water is essential for survival. Did you know that California currently imports 100% of its clean water supply? Yes... and we are not increasing our world water supply. Yes, there are technologies being researched to desaltize the ocean waters, but think about the cost of that. It’s not a quick and easy solution. The best solution would be for everyone to be frugal. While major medias are telling us to conserve water during showers and toothbrushing, they are leaving out a major part of water usage.

According to the Stockholm International Water Institute, 20% of all world water supply goes to industries, 10% of all water goes to households, and 70% of all water goes to producing food. These statistics awaken a lot of people because if you think about how much water we use in industries and households (it’s A LOT), many folds more is going to agriculture. Now get this: within the agricultural business (which uses 70% of all our clean water), 1 POUND OF LETTUCE takes 23 gallons of water to produce, 1 POUND OF WHEAT takes 25 gallons of water, 1 POUND OF APPLES take 49 gallons of water, 1 POUND OF CHICKEN takes 815 gallons of water, 1 POUND OF PORK takes 1,630 gallons of water, and 1 POUND OF BEEF takes 5,214 gallons of water. (You can do some research online to see how to have defined these water usage values according to pounds) So now the question is, one plate of dinner will fill most of us up (some go for seconds, thirds, but anyways..). If you fill that one plate with meat, that’s 6000 gallons of water or more. If you fill that one plate up with rice and veggies (this can be tasty faux meat too!), it takes less than 100 gallons of water. Please, be frugal and responsible. Imagine a planet with no more water.

Here are just some additional costs of livestock production. Did you know that livestock farming land takes up 70% of all agricultural land, and 30% of world's ice-free terrestrial surface? Yup. And for the forest lovers (we should all love forests, they are the lungs of our planet), 70% of the Amazon rainforest is currently being occupied by pastures; feedcrops occupy a large sector of the remaining 30%.

Everyone talks about saving energy now with new bulbs, solar power, etc. Well why not talk about food, too. The livestock sector requires 16 times more fossil fuel energy than other sectors of agriculture. Moreover, livestock is increasingly being fed with grains and cereals that could have been consumed by humans, converting only up to 33% of its nutrients for our consumption.

Lastly (for my purposes), the U.S. livestock sector alone produces 900 million tons of manure annually. Immense lagoons used to store waste are known to heavily degrade the surrounding air and water, creating dead zones within our clean bodies of water. Besides harming our precious marine life, it’s nice to know that we are surrounded by 80% of water of this planet. So if our ocean dies, we probably don’t have much of a chance for survival either.

All in all, it’s good that we are more aware of global warming and finally (most people) recognize it as partially (if not mostly) human caused. Now, besides being frugal, using a reusable bag, riding a bike or taking the bus, changing lightbulbs, and saving shower time, please also change your diet. It really makes a huge impact, even though it seems like you’re just intaking a piece of meat, that piece of meat came from loads of environmental damage (as well as suffering!). Inaction is inexcusable. If you’re a non-vegetarian, go vegetarian. If you’re already a vegetarian, go vegan. If you’re already a vegan... go organic Of course, if you can go straight to organic vegan that is the best for the environment in terms of personal contribution. Be Veg, Be Green, Save the Planet. (doubtful? do
