Hi everyone.  I am glad to be here.  I am a married work at home mom of 3 and 1 stepson.  We live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  I work from home helping people make healthy choices in their lives and in the environment in which we live.  I too, am concerned with the environment and how it effects us and our children.  What better way then to start from home and work yourself outward to other areas of our world.   [ send green star]  [ accepted]

My name is Jim, and I new.  I have always wanted to help nonprofit charities raise money.  There was one day when I was in a board meeting, and we were discussing a great new program we wanted to offer.  All we had to do was raise the funds.  That meant everybody going around and asking for money from friends, professional associates, etc.  Most people do not like to do that.  I can understand that.

That is when I started thinking about ways nonprofits could raise money without having to ask – ways that made people want to give support - that provided a real benefit to the giver.

The result was http://www.clickshopsupport.org/shop-for-the-planet.html    More and more people are spreading the word and doing their online shopping through that site, so many of the best charities that support the environment will receive funds from over 1,500 participating merchants (Staples, Amazon, eBay, Dell, etc.).  Besides giving to a group of charities (they are listed on the site), most of these stores offer special savings to shoppers that shop through http://www.clickshopsupport.org/shop-for-the-planet.html   The prices are the same or better than going to these stores direct.

I spend most of my time working on this program, improving the shopping experience, and adding suitable stores.  I have never been so happy doing anything.

Hello! April 04, 2007 1:28 PM

Thanks for the informative and inspiring input you're providing in this group hosts & members!

I haven't seized the opportunity to properly introduce myself and my/our purposes before. Hopefully that didn’t bother you too much.

As a happy family father, husband of a most gifted mother and teacher, an engineer and inhabitant of one of the most fortunate nations in this world ... so I guess I'm a very lucky ... ! My fortunate situation strengthens my feeling of responsibility to do my very best to ensure that anyone on this planet, including my children’s children, will have the prospect of being able to attain a similar level of well-being in our common future. So, what's my point in joining this group?

The SHEW Initiative focusses on structural change of our governance, economic and value systems through joined efforts of our common sense ... for the purpose of envisioning and pursuit of a world of Sustainable Human and Ecological Well-being. The people @ C2C provide a rich source of inspiration for that cause.

I expect this group to connect people who are willing to positively address and assess all essential aspects of our 'one-ness' on our home we call 'earth' and have an open mind for setting new starting points for the re-definition of the doctrines that govern our behaviour. That is, to my point of view, the most important challenge we are faceing in the present era.

For us, this groups common sense can help us find the proper justification of TSI itself and ways to create and spread the awareness we so urgently require in this era: the awareness of our common destiny, our unity, our responsibility and our ability to establish and maintain a world of SHEW. So, I really hope to find some inspiration here ... and maybe in return I can inspire a few people as well.

Sincerely,

Founder of The SHEW Initiative

Hi Brent, Kat, Chris, all Just to let you know that I do still take an interest in the group (some have wondered if I do even at the ones of my own starting ). I'm hoping that with the coming of spring here (UK) and the promise of summer, that I'll be able to invigorate my enthusiasm for internet groups. Let's hope so, eh?

Rhonda's Introduction June 12, 2005 4:19 PM

Thanks for the invite, Brent. I'll be watching the posts with interest. I'm working on a book right now, about the beliefs and fears behind consumer choices, and a process to create a more sustainable personal lifestyle. I'd like to know the ways in which folks have found work that contributes to sustainability of life on the Earth. There is a thread on Sustainability 101 that I placed to request info on occupations. You can read more there, if you're interested.  --Bear  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Responsible shopper May 08, 2005 6:39 PM

Doing my part to be a green consumer. I've been visiting responsibleshopper.com before making major purchases. The information listed changed my mind about what type of car I recently purchased. Now I drive a VW Golf powered by Biodeisel. I usually buy non-leather shoes, belts & such from Pangea online because it's so difficult to find vegan shoes in the stores.   [ send green star]  [ accepted]

thanks for the invite March 28, 2005 8:12 PM

Brent for the invite. I have been a casual environmentalist for a while but am starting to get more involved. One thing I now do regularly is when I am meditating I visualise the world and send Reiki to heal the damage that man is causing.

currently I am studying for a BA in Psychology and Criminology. I just began it last year. main problem is getting time management happening so I can find the time to study and get onto the net.

Looking forward to meet you all and learning from you.

Hi Kathleen & Thanks SarahJane March 14, 2005 2:43 PM

Hi Kathleen,

It seems that you have quite the background as an activist, with serious credentials.

FYI, it was the great SarahJane that invited me to this group and I am happy to have joined.

I am organizing a green business networking group in Columbia County, NY and look to forward the sustainability movement - by bringing together consciousness and money.

I guess the biggest thing is to weave a web that creates a support structure of conscious consumers and business people that take actions in line with values that enhance the local economy, the social fabric and the environment.

Hey Kathleen since you are in my neck of the woods - my friends at Sustainable Hudson Valley http://sustainhv.org have a great event coming up...It might be a great place to hand out your resume.

March 16, 7 – 9 pm, Green Drinks, monthly gathering for sustainable business and environmental professionals (self-selecting). One part strategy session, one part schmooze.  Bring info about your business or project.  At New World Home Cooking, Route 212, Saugerties aka Saugers-stock - cause its near Woodstock.

Directions:  http://www.newworldhomecooking.com.  Info:  845-679-9597.  Special guests:  Gwen Hallsmith of Global Community Initiatives, who is helping plant seeds of sustainable economic and social development from Johannesburgh to Calgary,  and Carl Frankel of Our Community Networks, an innovative social venture to support locally owned businesses and nonprofits.

I'll be there to.

Until Later,

Leslie

hi Leslie! March 14, 2005 10:14 AM

I'm new to the group as well.

I am finishing up a degree this may in Ecology and Natural Resource Management with a certification in secondary biology education and a minor in agroecology.  I am very involved in environmental activism online and on campus where I am involved in the university environmental council and the student enviromental awareness organization.  occasionally, when I have the time, the sustainability coalition as well.   I was also a former editor (3 terms) for the school environmental paper.  and I currently represent my major on the school council (I didn't run, but I was still elected).

I am hoping, fingers crossed, to get a job in organic agriculture for the summer... sent the resume out this morning.

in the fall, I will be student teaching to finish up my degree... speaking of which, I should be hearing back from schools in a week or so about if they're potentially interesting in having me student teach there.... eek!

and then, I have no idea what I'll be doing.

oh, and I am also an earth day organizer at my school.  we have organized a university wide summit the last three years with lots of fun and academic topics to learn about.  that in itself can nearly be a full time job!
