and gladly. with the current administration more concerned with dollars than what's really right, this becomes even more important than ever before!

Recently, hundreds of dead cats, dogs and other animals that were cruelly killed were found in two wooded areas of West Virginia. They included animals with rabies vaccination and name tags, indicating they were pets. Overall more than 250 dead animals have been identified, inventoried and photographed.
Due to the current inadequacy of federal laws, authorities often rely on state legislation to prosecute offenders, even in cases of horrifying abuse against animals. In this case, because the animals were found in West Virginia, prosecutors are turning over the case to local officials, where the offenders can only be charged with a misdemeanor - a charge that generally doesn't come with imprisonment.
Urge your elected officials to pass strict federal laws making cruelty a federal offense, with federal jail time.
Thank you for posting. I have signed each and every one of the petitions. I am sickened by the cruel and barbaric behavior of the monsters who torture, abuse and kill these sweet, beautiful creatures - and also by the courts, who continually fail to give out more than a mere slap on the wrist!
Two local men were arrested by the Auburn Police Department on the night of Sept 19 on felony charges they kicked and stomped a cat to death. Chris R. Shaffer, 21, of 187 Cottage St., Apt. D, Auburn, and Steven M. Shaffer, 19, of North Main Street, Port Byron, were both arrested on a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to an animal and a violation charge of the city's prohibition against open containers of alcohol. We are asking for vigorous prosecution, as well as jail time, a heavy fine and mandatory psychological and substance abuse testing and counseling if they are convicted.
I have just read and signed the petition: "TELL IAMS TO CEASE CAT EXPERIMENTS"
Please take a moment to read about this important issue, and join me in signing the petition. It takes just 30 seconds, but can truly make a difference. We are trying to reach 5,000 signatures - please sign here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/924058979
Once you have signed, you can help even more by asking your friends and family to sign as well.
I signed this morning . Thanks for bringing this to my attention . This is horrible...the guy most likely thought he was doing something cool. He should LEARN to turn his bad behavior to something constructive ...not destructive. This is terrible.
Everyone (please), please sign this also.Every living creature on this Earth has value . How dare him .... and, he did this in front of kids too.
Thanks to all who posted the links. I have signed each one. It is hard to read about so many cases of horrific abuse and suffering - but we must speak for those who can not.
I signed each and every one of them. So many good petitions out there. I just can't believe how many people out there are SO mean to our furry friends. Have they no heart?

Repeat offenses of animal cruelty crimes are a rule, not an exception. Just as there are laws to register sex offenders, there should be laws to register animal abusers.

I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself.
As I'm sure you've noticed -- this thread has gotten quite long! I've reversed the order to display the most recent posts at the top. Hope that's okay with everyone. (Hope it'll be easier to view this way!) Please do continue to post petitions here! The only difference will be -- your posts will appear at the top instead of the bottom!

Marlene Kess, who has built a reputation in Manhattan as a caretaker of homeless and dying cats, had 48 cats inside her house, including 38 in one room, authorities stated. Kess was cited for health code violations, including keeping an unlawful number of animals, harboring dead animals and causing an environmental hazard with the corpses. The SPCA, which enforces the state's animal cruelty laws, charged Kess with 38 counts of failing to properly shelter cats. We petition that Kess undergo psychological testing and counseling and that she not be able to keep 48 cats in her home until the investigation has been complete.

Hello everyone! And thanks for the invite Betty: this group is great!! I have 3 wonderful cats (I'll show you some photos later) and I love them so much: they are my family.
I have just read and signed the petition: "To Avenge the Death of a Tortured Cat"
We are trying to reach 0 signatures, and we need YOUR HELP!
This Sort of Crime must be punished to the fullest extent of the law; anything less is unacceptable. Please help by signing this petition. It takes 30 seconds and will really help. Please follow this link:
Hi Betty! I signed yours too. Anyone: I get "Armed Forces America" in the state-window...what do I have to do to get "sweden" to appear automaticly when I quick-sign a petition? Love Helena

Try again... when I tried the first one came up not found and the other two were fine. I waited and tried the first one again and it came up.

I'm always looking for new petitions to sign. Thanks so much to everyone who has contributed petition links on animal abuse. How can we expect people to get along with each other if they can't even show a shred of decency or respect to our animal friends?

Animal abusers are known child abusers May 13, 2005 10:56 AM
Thanks Betty. Just wanted to let everyone to know that in the state of Missouri residents are taught to report animal abuse because the same people who abuse their pets are found to abuse their children. And, this situation fits the description perfectly. If having his children watch while he killed that poor cat isn't child abuse, I don't know what is . I signed the petition and sincerely hope the court or D.A. realizes this is also a case of child abuse.

I've signed most of them today...many of them I signed before...and those with deadlinedates already past in time-I did not know if I was supposed to sign... Love Helena
Betty, Thank you for posting this petition. I just can't believe this happened and that the school santioned it! Of course I signed the petition. It just gets worse all the time, it seems..
Once you have signed, help even more, by telling your friends and family to sign as well!
Thank you!
Betty Gregory
(This is one of the MANY petitions to stop the barbaric slaughter of the baby Harp Seals. Yes, I love our kitties and all pets. But, this brutal killing of the baby seals is very disturbing, too. It's something I've been protesting/campaigning against for years!)
Why do we have to make a petition to make these people pay. What happened that we think its ok to torture and kill something so special and and gives us happiness. We put people in jail for smaller things. People need to start questioning their morals and what life is really about. I also signed. Sad we have to do this

It makes me want to tear my hair out. April 25, 2005 5:02 PM
"There
were 34 horses in one small pasture with no grass, 24 in another, also
without grass. The remainder were in make-shift corrals. Some horses
were standing in two feet of mud, with no food in sight, he said. The
water troughs were frozen solid with horse manure in layers of the
frozen water, as though accumulated over time. Some horses were eating
their own feces as nothing else was available."
..... The toughest thing about being active in doing what you can to help these poor animals is knowing their stories...
I must believe (and this gives me hope) that for every one person like this, there are thousands who love, adore, care for and celebrate their animals.
I'm not into judging people... April 25, 2005 4:54 PM
but that is $%#ing disgusting. Absolutely disturbed... Dragging a poor dog behind a vehicle, beating a cat to death in front of children.... makes me SICK.
My only consolation is to believe (hope) that the MISERY they are feeling inside to be able to hurt such adorable, beautiful, MIRACULOUS little creatures is 2394923049309493209 times worse than the misery they have inflicted upon these poor little innocent cats and dogs; that their soul is twisting in unrelentless agony. I'm off to sign every last one of them.
<3 and praise to all decent animal lovers in the world, Gru

I signed. I live in indiana also..i've rescued several animals from the shelters here in my home town..my jazzy kitty was a shelter kitty. and i also rescued 2 dogs and 3 other cats at different times.
Thank you for posting this.
I hope something can be done. the local shelters are also in deplorable condition..thought i will venture to say they are in 100% better condition then they were 3 years ago after someone new took over. They hope to make it a no kill shelter also.
So keep them in your thoughts also as they try and raise the money to make that transition
Hi! I'm new here! Thanks for inviting me and I just wanted to let you know that I've signed the petition as well! It just make my heart sick to read about the abuse of any animal.

I signed all of the petitions that I could find on animal abuse. Someone has to put a stop to all of the abuse in the world. It may as well be us, huh!?! The way I look at it, if a person will hurt, mame, or kill an animal, they won't hesitate to do the same to a human. They should be exiled to the moon or some place, away from those of us who can't do without these beautiful babies. I don't care if they're as old as Methusela, in my book, they are still babies. What can I say, I'm a sucker when it comes to an animal.
Have you hugged your babies today and said, "I love you____." ? They need that too.
The only thing that I can think of by reading and then signing all of these petitions is that people in my country (greece) keep treating animals like that every day and nobody really cares to stop them.
I'm disgusted of people that torture animals. They don't deserve to live. They are a DANGER to society.
What is it with these people? It makes me soo sad to hear about these things. I signed. If I ever seen anyone abusing an animal (especially a cat) I would walk right up to them and take the animal away or put up a fight trying anyways. Kat

Thanks Becca! (I, too, had thought about pinning this thread.) Animal abuse/torture seems to be so widespread these days.... I hope and pray that these petitions send a message that animal abuse will not be tolerated -- and WILL BE punished.
I'm going to pin this thread...i think everyone needs to see it. and also..if anyone has any petitions they think is something we need to look at..can post it on this thread also.
A Clare county teenager is in trouble with the law after deputies say he tortured a cat to death. The Clare county sheriff's office says they responded to the complaint Saturday involving a teen in Harrison. When they arrived, they discovered a cat had been tortured and killed. Deputies said they found the cat in a bucket in the garage of a Harrison home while investigating an animal cruelty complaint over the weekend.
The A 15-year-old boy is now being held in a Midland juvenile detention facility and faces various animal cruelty and assault charges.
We petition that The Honorable Norm Gage vigorously prosecute this case and request jail time and mandatory psychological counseling for the 15 year old boy.
A man has been arrested and accused of torturing and killing a dog that was tied to a vehicle and dragged, and then taped to the steering wheel of another vehicle and left to die. Thirty-seven-year-old Mark Allen Starcher of Pond Gap was charged today with one count of felony animal cruelty. Its front paws and chest cavity had been taped to the steering wheel of an abandoned sport utility vehicle. Patches of skin were torn off and bone was exposed near the left shoulder. The back of the skull had been impaled with an object, possibly a screw driver.
Officers with the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association said the dog likely was alive when someone taped it to the steering wheel because its paws were swollen, indicating blood was still flowing.
As of Mar. 25th,2005 the defendant requested and was granted a time waiver, which means he is giving up his right to have a hearing within 10 days. The Kenawha County Magistrate Court was not sure when the hearing will be reset.
The prosecutor is Michael T. Clifford, Esq., who won a convication in the "Sunbear" case of starvation under the old (misdemeanor) law. The present case is a felony due to the outrage from the "Sunbear" case.
We petition Prosecutor Michael T. Clifford, Esq., to give the max. jail time this animal abuser and mandatory psychological counseling and do not permit him to ever have an animal in his possession.
After drinking three-quarters of a bottle of vodka Sunday night, a Des Moines man beat a house cat to death in front of his young children, infuriated because the animal had scratched him, police say. John Edward Peterson, 26, of 612 S.E. Sixth St. was arrested and charged with three counts of child endangerment and cruelty to animals, according to Des Moines police. Since it's unusual for someone to go to prison in Iowa in a case involving the killing of an animal, we're petitioning The Honorable John Sarcone give John Edward Peterson the maximum jail time for animal abuse and mandatory psychological counseling.
