I WISH I saw Pink Floyd! Never got the chance...other than in the Museum of Natural History, the Hayden Planetarium has a laser show that used their music.
What music growing up? well.. I grew up in my grandparents house, and with most of their 5 children, then there was me...so? thats 3 generations of music under one roof! Most of my aunts and uncles were crazy about Elvis and Chuck Berry, while my grandparents were trying to cling to music from the 40's! lol
Technically I guess the Beatles and the whole Woodstock generation music- the anti VietNam war music. My first concert my cousin took me to while I was still in grammar school- Crosby Stills Nash and Young. I saw a number of concerts but I think my all time favorite EVER was Fleetwood Mac.
Ethnically growing up was a little unusual, as I am a mutt of Irish, Greek, English, Dutch and Italian...and later an aunt married an Egyptian, so I had cousins that liked middle easter music.
Ever try to sing Danny Boy while dancing to Zorba the Greek? lolol
O! Yea,,, and classical...! In school... music and art were a REQUIREMENT and learning to play an instrument minimum of 4 years... music was not a leisure elective, but part of our regular eduction cirriculum. I cant say I much appreciated that at the time, but I sure do now!
My Grandmother loved this song, when I was at her home we used to listen together.
My friend Cathie is doing her thesis on Music and spirituality
I just love the way music can bring people together
Thank you for that Full Moon! Yep my grandmother liked that too, very much AND instisted I watch alot of Julie Andrews movies, lol
From The Sound of Music
My formative years, so to speak, were in the '70s. Personally, I'm a big Elton fan, plus The Beatles (even though they were a tad before my time...)
Thank you for the great memories as I listen. I am surprised no one mentioned Sinatra, Dean Martin, Debbie Reynolds...I grew up with country, bluegrass and many other cultures...I took accordian & even went to accordian camp once!
For Mary- a little before my time but fun all the same- enjoy
Frank Sinatra- That's Life
Well, my parents had very different tastes in music than I did so I guess I was rebelling when I was a teenager. Around the house, they had a lot of stuff from musicals. My mom was a huge musical fan. My dad was really into big band sounds, Benny Goodman kind of stuff, very good music for Sunday morning to cook eggs to and dance around the kitchen which my parents did every Sunday morning! That was almost like comfort music to me because I grew up with it. I hit the teenage years and it was perfect because the 80s were my teen years with all those heavy metal hair bands. Right up my alley! I still enjoy that music. It's my nostalgia! My husband often comes in and shuts those cds off. Not his type of music! He kind of laughs at me when he walks out of the room!! What we do now is such a departure from that... LOL But it was fun to grow up with that music and I still listen to it. I still have my Camaro, put the top down and crank up songs from the 80s.
60`s & 70`s & 80`s & 90`s & today music . like madonna , bee gees ,
billy joel, go go`s and so on.
As a young child , I too grew up with Gospel, County - Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, etc. Then I was introduced by my Aunt , who was 14 and I was 7 to a new kind of music- Elvis Presley ! Bu to this day I remember a song from 1962 , that my Aunt had the music and words to and was playing it on the piano. That song was the first song I taught myself to play on the piano , by ear-as I did not yet know how to read music. The song was by the Shirelles - "Soldier Boy" , I loved it then and I love it now. And then we go to Feb. 1964 on Ed Sullivan and there was this band from England called THE BEATLES ! It was all over then - it was Rock and Roll - Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin , The Doors , Rolling Stones and we could go on forever. I am still a lover of Country music, Bluegrass, Blues,
Classical, just about anything. I LOVE MUSIC ! And I still crank it up when one of my favs comes on and rattle the windows !
My Dad is a musicaholic so we had everything growing up. My parents music collection spans just about every culture and country in the world on vinyl, tapes and now CDs.
My Mum was a certifiable folkie and used to play guitar to us while we were in the bath!
Two of my cousins and my Gramps were in the Legion Pipeband so bagpipes and drums were a big part of my life. I also remember cringing to hours of opera, falling asleep to endless classical, dancing to the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Pete Seeger.....mmmmthe Sound of Music over and over til you could hear it skip. Liona Boyd and Nana Miscouri.
Of course then when my cousins would babysit we got Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, The Eagles, Nazareth....how much time have you got.
And we still crank the Chieftans at Christmas and dance til we can't dance anymore!
I still remember my first record when I was 6, it was a 45, Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede, funny I always thought it was by BJ Thomas, but it starts with the uga chaka, uga chaka, uga uga uga chaka! I hated that! LOL
I listened to the FM stations playing rock, they played songs from late 50's, 60's of course, Motown, soft rock like The Carpenters and I liked it all. To this day I like from Abba to ZZ Top, all genres with a couple of exceptions.
My dad did listen to Sinatra, and tangos. I got my parents to buy me the Mitch Miller song along collection, only a few lears later I started buying my music, ELO, Boston and Kansas. Quite a change from Mitch Miller!
Cliff R ~ Living Doll ~ Travelling Light ~ Lucky Lips
Tommy S Little White Ball ~ Half a Sixpence
Dad liked opera. Mom liked popular music (mostly 30s & 40s) and musicals. She liked all the Italian classics too. She played piano. My older brother listened to 50s rock & roll. Elvis, Little Richard, Bill Haley, Buddy Holly and others.
I didn't pay too much attention to music 'till my brother started listening to The Beatles. It was all downhill from there...next thing i knew i was a drummer in a rock band.
