I considered posting this movie in the thread of "Demons" but this is a fiction movie, not based on a true story or events that have happened. It does, however address curses that some people believe in. If you like scary, then you might like this movie.
It is
scheduled to be released here locally on May 29th. It
is a story of an elderly woman, played by Loma Raver who comes to the
bank and asks for a third extension on her delinquent mortgage. The
loan officer played by Alison Lohman decides this time to prove herself
as not being a "softy" and denies her request. The elderly woman, a
Slavic, decides to put a curse on the loan officer, Lohman. Demons
terrorizes her and she fights to save her soul from damnation.
I
really liked this movie! It will satisfy the Sci-fi fan the UFO fan.
The special effects were great! To be honest I was expecting a little
different story line, along the line of "National Treasure" in which
Nicolas Gage stared. This turned out to be a movie about aliens saving
certain people from a disaster which will destroy planet Earth! My kind
of movie!
Nicolas
Cage stars in this story about a document he finds that predicts events
of disaster with incredible accuracy. It is coded on a piece of paper
that was found in a time capsule from 50 years earlier. Nicolas Cage
plays the leading role as a professor who decodes the document and
tries to prevent the disasters from happening or at least prepare the
potential victims to avoid death. Then there is the "ultimate" disaster
which he himself needs to avoid.
Unfortunately I have been part of an Exorcism so
no one has to sell me on the fact that there is negative energy out
there. Sometimes we have to battle it so the good prevails.
As to haunting or Poltergeists; I have only heard about them. There are a few TV shows about Poltergeists and hauntings.
At
least this movie did not overly dramatize true events which are the
basis for the movie, such as the original demon movie we have all heard
about or saw, "Exorcist". I had some knowledge of these events which
report that the Snedeker family moved into a house which they later
learned was once a funeral home, Mortuary. What caused the family to
discredit encounters originally by their son was that their son had
cancer and the treatment he was undergoing was experimental and that
caused the "hallucinations".
The movie reveals that the cancer
disappeared after they vacated the house but not until the son "freed"
the tortured soul who was about the same age as the son; and all the
other souls trapped in the house from the years of evil when it was a
funeral home. I guess it suggests that it was fate that the son would
have the cancer and come to stay at the house to do what he had to do.
I
have to give some credit to the story in that it has been know that
people having cancer can have much sensitivity to the spirit world. The movie has its own
explanation as to that phenomenon.

1408:
To the fellow curious members here:
This
movie came out in 2007 and I did see when it at the theater but what
prompted me to review it here was seeing it again on Showtime on TV. It
is based on a Stephen short story.
This is a movie about an
author who write books on the paranormal. He visits sites reported to
be haunted and then writes about them. John Cusack plays the role of
the author. Samuel L. Jackson also plays in this movie but relatively a
small part as the Hotel manager where room 1408 is haunted. John Cusack
as his own devils he battles with the death of his daughter. The
daughter is the underlining story.
Cusack learns about this
haunted room and decides to visit it. He himself is s skeptic and
really does not believe in ghosts. This room, however, is nothing that
he has experienced before.
The entire movie is pretty much in
the room. Yet, it seems to keep you on edge for most of the movie.
Especially if you are in to this kinds of experiences. Cusack, as usual
does a great job acting. Here is a trailer:
