Weekend adoption help needed at the Orange County Shelter The OC shelter holds dog adoption days at the PetsMart in Central Park (Spotsylvania, VA) each weekend from 11 am - 5 pm. They need volunteers to drive the dogs from the shelter to the shop (and back), or to clean dog runs at the shelter while she delivers the dogs. Drivers are also needed to take cats from the Orange County shelter to the PetsMart in Bull Run Plaza in Manassas, VA. Contact Beth at 540-672-1124. Boycott the Pet Stores! December 08, 2006 1:46 PM

Don't sell or buy companion animals when you can get them from a shelter or rescue!  Even if you want a particular breed, just go to http://www.Goodsearch.com and type in the breed and your state, for example, "Cocker Spaniel Rescue New York", or "Siamese Cat Rescue Maryland", and it'll show you any in your area.  Almost definitely, the animal will already be "fixed" and vaccinated, and ready to go home!  Not so with most pet store pets!

A general exception is Petsmart, who usually takes pets from shelters and adopts them out.

the overwhelming number of 'dumpers' and lower rate of adoptions impacts helping the next one in crisis.Adoption days are difficult to meet in other towns due to the full time care needed @ facility.

In the wake of football star Michael Vick's guilty plea Friday in a dogfighting scandal, local animal shelters and rescue centers are reminding residents of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties that cruelty against animals is inhumane and illegal.
