PETITION TO WARN THE JAPANESE PEOPLE OF
MERCURY DANGER
To:
Policy Planning and Communication Division
The Department of Food Safety Bureau
The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare
Tokyo, Japan
E-Mail: syokucommunication@mhlw.go.jp
Fax: +81-3-3503-7965
Copy the following letter and send as email to above emailadress
Dear Minister of Health:
There is worldwide concern that mercury accumulated in the human body may pose a serious health risk, especially to pregnant women and children.
As you know, dolphin meat from drive hunts in Taiji, Wakayama prefecture, proved to be highly contaminated with toxic chemicals such as mercury, methyl mercury and PCBs. Repeated chemical analyses have shown that the level of mercury in dolphin meat is much higher than the maximum allowable level set by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan.
We understand that the role of the Department of Food Safety Bureau is to promote food safety, thereby ensuring the health of the Japanese people. We urgently request the following:
1. Prohibit the sale of dolphin meat that contains mercury exceeding the maximum allowable level set by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW). The sale of food items with toxic agricultural chemicals exceeding the maximum allowable level set by MHLW is already prohibited as a result of the "Positive-list System," which was adopted in 2006. Since mercury is as harmful to the human body as toxic agricultural chemicals, the "Positive-list System" should also apply to mercury.
2. Until the above request is put into effect, consumers must be warned of the dangers associated with consuming mercury contaminated dolphin meat, in much the same way they are being warned of the health risks associated with smoking cigarettes: Every store that sells dolphin meat must be obligated to post a prominent warning label on each meat package, stating as follows: "This food item possibly contains mercury exceeding the maximum allowable level set by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Mercury accumulated in the human body may harm your health."
Sincerely,
(Your Name & Country)

Urge Iceland to stop its cruel slaughter of whales
Dear Claudia,
Imagine you are on a whale watching trip, eyes scanning the horizon, waiting with bated breath for a glimpse of one of the most magnificent creatures on earth...
...only to watch in horror as the grace and beauty of a surfacing whale is destroyed by an explosive harpoon.
If only such a scene was as improbable as it sounds. But in Iceland, where the cruelty of whaling has already killed more than 200 whales this year - it's very real.
Please urge Iceland's Fisheries Minister to stop killing whales.
It's hard to believe that as tourists bundle up to board a whale watching boat docked in Iceland, whalers there are busy preparing their ships to slaughter these same incredible animals. Especially when you consider that much of the whale meat will end up in a freezer, unused.
In fact, only 1.1% of Icelanders claim to eat whale meat once a week or more (2006 Gallup poll). Whale watching, on the other hand, generates almost £5m a year for coastal communities in Iceland - a humane, sustainable and profitable alternative to whaling.
And yet Iceland's government, despite its current economic crisis, has increased the number of whales that can be killed - pushing threatened species like the endangered fin whale closer to extinction.
Twenty-six countries have joined together to file a formal expression of their deep disappointment with Iceland's decision. But now I need YOU to join them in expressing your outrage.
Every day during summer's peak season in Iceland, thousands of tourists spend their hard earned money in the hopes of witnessing the serene majesty of a whale. Let's make sure they still have something to see.
Thanks for taking action,
Fred O'Regan
IFAW CEO
P.S. There is no humane way to kill a whale. Whales can take more than half an hour to die after being harpooned. Please join me in telling the Icelandic government to end whaling now and work instead to protect its valuable whale watching industry.
There is an online petition available that you can now sign available here ------> http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/help-stop-illegal-whaling
This stance of the Australian government is simply not acceptable after the promises that were made to defend whaling and we need to show our disdain and let our voices be heard.

Every year about 7,000 humpback whales migrate to the coastal waters in northeastern Madagascar to breed and calve.
At the same time, large trawling boats in the bay use huge nets to sift through the sea and catch fish and other marine life. Those that target shrimp for export are particularly detrimental to the area because of their impact on the sea floor habitat and their high level of "bycatch."
Help protect humpback whales! Pledge to reduce your consumption of shrimp today >>
These and other largely unregulated operations represent a growing threat to Antongil Bay's wildlife--including the humpback whales and who migrate there to calve.
Larry, you can help humpback whales and all of the marine life that visit and live in Antongil Bay by choosing to not eat shrimp that often, or by eliminating it from your diet altogether.
Take the pledge today! >>
If you already do not eat shrimp, thank you! Please pledge to share this action with at least one person and ask them to help us protect ocean wildlife too.
My friends.I ask your help and patience again.I want the final boost for my petition.I'm going to deliver my petition september 22th to the dutch government in The Hague.I'm going to deliver it in person, together with my (Care2)friend Alicya L,she helped me with spreading of this petition, idea's and supported me very much.We will go there to meet up with parlement members.I had phone contact with the director of Sea Shepherd Netherlands Geert Vons, who phoned me last week,Sea Shepherd is extremely pleased+proud with this petition and support. Please could you check if you have signed, but most important, could you forward (again) please?I would really like to reach 5,500 signatures.I'm going to close my petition on wednesday, then i have to start printing out the signatures.Thank you so much for your help as always.Hugs Claudia ~For the Oceans~
The American organisation Sea Shepherd has two ships sailing under the Dutch flag. The Netherlands provided the necessary certificate of registry for this in 2007, after Sea Shepherd had promised in writing not to use violence and to comply with the safety rules. Nonetheless, a number of incidents have taken place between Sea Shepherd ships and Japanese whalers in the Antarctic.
Japan has repeatedly complained to the Netherlands about the Sea Shepherd. It appears difficult at the moment to take action against ships that do not comply with the rules, so the cabinet wants to speedily extend its legal options for withdrawing certificates of registry, according to Huizinga.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This can NOT happen. As a dutch citizen,i'm proud that the Steve Irwin vessel sails under the dutch flag ! Violence??? There's no worse violence than illegally killing whales in the Antartic Whale Sanctuary, slaughtering seals and skin them alive, plundering the oceans ! Sea Shepherd is doing the job in conservation, something that all governments in this world FAIL at !!!!! All supporters of Sea Shepherd Unite !

Take Action for Japan's Dolphins

In The Cove, a team of activists and filmmakers infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.
The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story. It's critical that we get the word out in Japan. Once the Japanese people know we believe they will demand change.
For today's Daily Action, send a letter to President Obama, Vice President Biden and Japanese Ambassador to the United States Ichiro Fujisaki urging them to address this issue.

Appeal to the Dutch Government Who Wants Emergency Act Against 'Environmental Pirates' Sea Shepherd

Denmark
A proposal before the IWC this year would allow Greenland, a protectorate of Denmark, to begin killing humpback whales. Humpback whales have not been hunted industrially since the mid-1960s, and their populations have not fully recovered from centuries of whaling. Allowing them to be killed again could open up the door to extinction for this majestic species.
Tell the Prime Minister and Queen of Denmark that they should not allow Greenland to begin killing humpback whales.
Switzerland
Switzerland once disapproved of whaling because of the cruelty involved -- there is no humane way to kill an animal so large. But this country now says that it believes commercial whaling should be allowed, as long as it is regulated. Whaling is still as inhumane as ever and, with the additional threats that whales face, such as climate change, food depletion, ship collisions, and entanglement in fishing gear, there is simply no justification for subjecting them to suffering and death at the hands -- and harpoons -- of whalers.
Tell the President of the Swiss Confederation to remember why Switzerland was against whaling in the first place--it is cruel and unnecessary.
Please show your support for whales by telling Denmark and Switzerland not to sanction whaling at this year’s IWC meeting!

Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett has last week announced a conservation zone over Australia's Coral Sea, east of the Great Barrier Reef. While full protection is not yet assured, the announcement means that we are one step closer to protecting the Coral Sea in the largest marine reserve on Earth!
The Coral Sea is one of the last great refuges for marine wildlife on the planet. Large marine wildlife such as minke whales, sharks, marlin and tuna have not yet been severely depleted in the region. We now have a real chance to make an unparalleled contribution to global marine conservation and the health of the planet.
Please take a minute to join The Australian Marine Conservation Society and sign the petition to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and encourage him to support the visionary proposal to establish a no-take heritage park in the Coral Sea and support Peter Garrett in furthering protection of this iconic region.

Resorts World at Sentosa wants to import whale sharks for the attraction and entertainment of visitors. Whale sharks are vulnerable to extinction and have never done well in captivity. They can grow as large as two city buses, migrate thousands of kilometers in the wild, and live up to a hundred years. It is just plain cruel to keep them in glass cages.
Whale sharks have never fared well in captivity. Two whale sharks died within five months of each other at the Georgia Aquarium.
Write to the Minister of National Development, the Singapore Tourism Board and
Resorts World at Sentosa before this tragedy happens on our shores.

- The cages allow fish waste and chemicals to flush straight into the open ocean.
- Fish farms can introduce escaped fish to the wild that behave differently from and compete with and spread disease to wild fish populations.
- Fishmeal and oil - made from smaller, wild fish species - are used to feed farmed carnivorous fish. Increasing fish farming to an industrial level could increase demand for fishmeal and oil - in turn, decreasing the food available for wild fish populations, marine mammals and seabirds. In some cases, it takes up to six pounds of wild fish in feed to produce just one pound of farmed fish.
Congress has been protecting us from widespread development of ocean fish farming by rejecting several bills proposed in recent years allowing the industry access to our ocean waters. This Gulf plan is a backdoor way to get around Congress' decision. Luckily, there is a new leader at NOAA - Dr. Jane Lubchenco - who is known for basing decisions on sound science.

A crucial deadline is looming: By May 9, the Obama administration has to seize its opportunity to overturn last-minute Bush administration regulations that gut the Endangered Species Act, or it will miss the chance. The Bush rules exempt thousands of federal activities from review under the Endangered Species Act, and specifically exclude greenhouse gas emissions from regulation. If this administration doesn't withdraw those "extinction rules" by May 9, they will stay in effect -- a disaster for endangered species.
Congress specifically empowered Obama's secretaries of Commerce and Interior with the authority to overturn the Bush extinction regulations with the stroke of a pen. The secretaries of Commerce and Interior jointly administer the Endangered Species Act, with the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (under Commerce) responsible for marine species such as whales and sea turtles, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (in Interior) responsible for species such as wolves and polar bears.
While more than 80,000 people have written to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar demanding he revoke the Bush rules, Gary Locke has only recently been confirmed as secretary of Commerce and has yet to take a position on the issue. Similarly, Dr. Jane Lubchenco, the new head of the National Ocean Atmospheric Administration, has failed to take a public position on rescinding the extinction rules.
Please contact Secretary Locke and Dr. Lubchenco and urge them to immediately revoke the Bush extinction regulations.
Click here to find out more and take action. If you have trouble following the link, go to http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2167/t/5243/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=27121.
Sample letter:
Subject: Rescind the Bush Extinction Regulations!
I strongly oppose the Bush administration's illegal and illogical regulations under Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act, which reduce protections to imperiled species and create an exemption for greenhouse gas emissions.
I request that you revoke these regulations immediately, within the 60-day window provided by Congress for their removal. The Endangered Species Act has a proven track record of success at reducing all threats to species, and it makes absolutely no sense, scientifically or legally, to exempt greenhouse gas emissions - the number-one threat to many species - from this successful system.
This is a critical moment for the new administration. President Obama pledged on the campaign trail that he would toss out these misguided regulations. Please do not be responsible for breaking this important campaign promise to the American people.

Stop Iceland from killing endangered whales!
To: Please write to the Icelandic Fisheries Minister and tell him whales are worth more alive than dead.
Iceland's Fisheries Minister Steingrímur J. Sigfússon is allowing 150 endangered fin whales and 100 minke whales to be cruelly killed; ignoring the tremendous economic benefit whale watching brings to the country and the world. Our friends at the Icelandic whale watching association, Icewhale, are worried that killing whales could also have a negative effect on their businesses. Apart from the unacceptable cruelty involved in whaling, during its economic crisis Iceland should be doing all it can to protect the whales it depends on for tourism.

Lifeforce has started a campaign to free a young Harbour porpoise from the Vancouver Aquarium rehab station. The porpoise was stranded in August 2008. Although she has been in good health for 3 months she has been kept in a small, shallow pool for a total of 6 months. She needs to be rehabilitated for release not captivity.
We have sent the attached letter to Minister Gail Shea, Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans . We have outlined all the reasons why she can be return to her home in the wild.
Please Read this Letter and send your letter to Minister Shea right away. Every day matters for this isolated and deprived porpoise. Her email address is Shea.G@parl.gc.ca

The Aquarium didn’t expect the porpoise named “Daisy” to survive.
She has been through a terrible ordeal and she has fought hard to survive. It’s time to get her out and back to her home in the wild. We must respect her fight to stay alive and give her that chance of freedom.
Thanks to Dusty R
