PETITION TO WARN THE JAPANESE PEOPLE OF
MERCURY DANGER
To:
Policy Planning and Communication Division
The Department of Food Safety Bureau
The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare
Tokyo, Japan
E-Mail: syokucommunication@mhlw.go.jp
Fax: +81-3-3503-7965
Copy the following letter and send as email to above emailadress
Dear Minister of Health:
There is worldwide concern that mercury accumulated in the human body may pose a serious health risk, especially to pregnant women and children.
As you know, dolphin meat from drive hunts in Taiji, Wakayama prefecture, proved to be highly contaminated with toxic chemicals such as mercury, methyl mercury and PCBs. Repeated chemical analyses have shown that the level of mercury in dolphin meat is much higher than the maximum allowable level set by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan.
We understand that the role of the Department of Food Safety Bureau is to promote food safety, thereby ensuring the health of the Japanese people. We urgently request the following:
1. Prohibit the sale of dolphin meat that contains mercury exceeding the maximum allowable level set by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW). The sale of food items with toxic agricultural chemicals exceeding the maximum allowable level set by MHLW is already prohibited as a result of the "Positive-list System," which was adopted in 2006. Since mercury is as harmful to the human body as toxic agricultural chemicals, the "Positive-list System" should also apply to mercury.
2. Until the above request is put into effect, consumers must be warned of the dangers associated with consuming mercury contaminated dolphin meat, in much the same way they are being warned of the health risks associated with smoking cigarettes: Every store that sells dolphin meat must be obligated to post a prominent warning label on each meat package, stating as follows: "This food item possibly contains mercury exceeding the maximum allowable level set by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Mercury accumulated in the human body may harm your health."
Sincerely,
(Your Name & Country)

This stance of the Australian government is simply not acceptable after the promises that were made to defend whaling and we need to show our disdain and let our voices be heard.

SAMPLE LETTER:
To Whom It May Concern,
It has come to my attention that you are a sponsor of the Miami Seaquarium's Buried Alive 2009 Halloween event, and you should be aware that the Miami Seaquarium exploits animals for profit, purchasing animals and imprisoning them for financial gain. You may be familiar with Lolita, a killer whale prisoner, one of Miami Seaquariums "attractions", but please allow me to elaborate. For almost her entire life, Lolita has been imprisoned by the Miami Seaquarium, forced to endure inadequate space, inferior medical treatment and care, lack of companionship, and involuntary training, made to perform silly tricks to the delight of primarily unknowing audiences. Since her forced slavery, which occurred in 1970 after the vicious capture and barbaric slaughter of her pod members, individuals comprising a large global group concerned with Lolita, have been encouraging the Miami Seaquarium to allow her freedom; sadly, corporate greed and indifference have resulted in Lolita's deteriorating mental and physical state and her continued imprisonment. As a corporate sponsor of the Miami Seaquarium's Buried Alive 2009 Halloween event, you are establishing your approval of animal cruelty, and I am appalled to learn of your deliberate involvement in the exploitation of animals. As such, I respectfully request that you sever your relationship with the Miami Seaquarium.
Although your company may assert that humane protocols must be followed in accordance with the Marine Mammal Protection Act standards, the visual evidence validates the position that these directives are often ignored in favor of park management; nevertheless, establishing a threshold of humane treatment is ambiguous at best, these standards being implemented by those with questionable interests, its oversight managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service as part of the Department of Commerce. As such, it is important to recognize that Lolita, being exploited in demonstrably cruel and unnecessary manners, is given no option as to her life and still displays behaviours typical

STOP THE bLOODY TRADITION OF THE FAROE ISLAND.
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-the-bloody-tradition-of-the-faroe-islands
Every year about 7,000 humpback whales migrate to the coastal waters in northeastern Madagascar to breed and calve.
At the same time, large trawling boats in the bay use huge nets to sift through the sea and catch fish and other marine life. Those that target shrimp for export are particularly detrimental to the area because of their impact on the sea floor habitat and their high level of "bycatch."
Help protect humpback whales! Pledge to reduce your consumption of shrimp today >>
These and other largely unregulated operations represent a growing threat to Antongil Bay's wildlife--including the humpback whales and who migrate there to calve.
Larry, you can help humpback whales and all of the marine life that visit and live in Antongil Bay by choosing to not eat shrimp that often, or by eliminating it from your diet altogether.
Take the pledge today! >>
If you already do not eat shrimp, thank you! Please pledge to share this action with at least one person and ask them to help us protect ocean wildlife too.
My friends.I ask your help and patience again.I want the final boost for my petition.I'm going to deliver my petition september 22th to the dutch government in The Hague.I'm going to deliver it in person, together with my (Care2)friend Alicya L,she helped me with spreading of this petition, idea's and supported me very much.We will go there to meet up with parlement members.I had phone contact with the director of Sea Shepherd Netherlands Geert Vons, who phoned me last week,Sea Shepherd is extremely pleased+proud with this petition and support. Please could you check if you have signed, but most important, could you forward (again) please?I would really like to reach 5,500 signatures.I'm going to close my petition on wednesday, then i have to start printing out the signatures.Thank you so much for your help as always.Hugs Claudia ~For the Oceans~
The American organisation Sea Shepherd has two ships sailing under the Dutch flag. The Netherlands provided the necessary certificate of registry for this in 2007, after Sea Shepherd had promised in writing not to use violence and to comply with the safety rules. Nonetheless, a number of incidents have taken place between Sea Shepherd ships and Japanese whalers in the Antarctic.
Japan has repeatedly complained to the Netherlands about the Sea Shepherd. It appears difficult at the moment to take action against ships that do not comply with the rules, so the cabinet wants to speedily extend its legal options for withdrawing certificates of registry, according to Huizinga.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This can NOT happen. As a dutch citizen,i'm proud that the Steve Irwin vessel sails under the dutch flag ! Violence??? There's no worse violence than illegally killing whales in the Antartic Whale Sanctuary, slaughtering seals and skin them alive, plundering the oceans ! Sea Shepherd is doing the job in conservation, something that all governments in this world FAIL at !!!!! All supporters of Sea Shepherd Unite !

Dear Campaign Whale Supporters,
Please help us to stop the dolphin killers!
------------------------------------------
HORRIFIC SLAUGHTER
Every year, over 20,000 smaller whales, dolphins and porpoises are cruelly slaughtered in Japanese waters. Those that have witnessed these hunts first hand, or watched our secretly filmed footage, will never forget the appalling brutality and suffering inflicted upon these beautiful, intelligent creatures.
SAVE JAPAN DOLPHINS!
Campaign Whale (http://www.campaign-whale.org/) is the only UK member organization of the ‘Save Japan Dolphins’ coalition which is fighting to end the slaughter of dolphins and porpoises in Japan. Within our ranks is Ric O’Barry, former trainer of ‘Flipper’ the dolphin (a hugely popular 1960s TV series and later Hollywood film) who is determined to expose the shocking link between these appalling hunts and the captive dolphin industry worldwide
‘THE COVE’
‘The Save Japan Dolphins’ coalition is a key partner in the award-winning film ‘The Cove’ that has received rave reviews in the United States and is due to be released in the UK this October. This feature length drama-documentary focuses on Taiji, a Japanese coastal town where over 2,000 dolphins are speared to death every year for their meat. While each dead dolphin sells for about US $600, but those few captured alive are worth as much as US $200,000 when sold to aquariums and dolphin ‘swim’ parks around the world.
‘The Cove’ also highlights a major theme of our campaign in Japan which is the serious health threat posed to the people that eat dolphin and porpoise meat as it is dangerously contaminated with toxic contaminants, such as mercury, that builds up in their bodies through the food chain. The shocking reality is that the people eating dolphin meat don’t know they are slowly poisoning themselves and their children!
AT A CINEMA NEAR YOU
‘The Cove’ is currently playing in cinemas across the USA and will be available to watch around the world beginning in the UK in October.
A preview of the documentary can be viewed on our website at http://www.campaign-whale.org/
CAMPAIGN WHALE: DEDICATED TO PROTECTING ALL WHALES, DOLPHINS AND PORPOISES
While ‘The Cove’ will help raise public awareness, we are mounting a major public and political campaign to end the horrific slaughter of dolphins in Japan. Campaign Whale is also fighting the killing of all whales, dolphins and porpoise around the world.
Campaign Whale is a well-respected,hard-working campaigning organisation that will not compromise over the killing of these beautiful, intelligent creatures. We are dedicated to protecting all whales, dolphins and porpoises and we need your help to do so!

Help protect deep water coral from North Carolina to Florida from destructive fishing methods including trawls, bottom longlines and dredges. This collection of deepwater coral is believed to be one of the largest deep reef ecosystems in the world!
Bottom trawls can move 18-ton rocks and pulverize everything in its path, including deep sea corals. Help preserve these unique cold-water reefs, which include hundreds of pinnacles up to 500 feet tall. They are America's answer to the Great Barrier Reef.

Speak Up for Endangered Salmon in the West
We are at a critical time right now for Columbia and Snake River salmon and steelhead. We desperately need a change in federal policy in order to protect endangered salmon and the communities and jobs that depend upon them.
Please ask for leadership from the Obama Administration to convene a stakeholder negotiation process to resolve the conflict in the Columbia-Snake River basin -- to restore wild salmon and steelhead to healthy fishable populations, to create jobs, keep communities prosperous, and promote a clean energy economy.
Please fill in your information, personalize the message below, and send it to Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ).

Denmark
A proposal before the IWC this year would allow Greenland, a protectorate of Denmark, to begin killing humpback whales. Humpback whales have not been hunted industrially since the mid-1960s, and their populations have not fully recovered from centuries of whaling. Allowing them to be killed again could open up the door to extinction for this majestic species.
Switzerland
Switzerland once disapproved of whaling because of the cruelty involved -- there is no humane way to kill an animal so large. But this country now says that it believes commercial whaling should be allowed, as long as it is regulated. Whaling is still as inhumane as ever and, with the additional threats that whales face, such as climate change, food depletion, ship collisions, and entanglement in fishing gear, there is simply no justification for subjecting them to suffering and death at the hands -- and harpoons -- of whalers.
Please show your support for whales by telling Denmark and Switzerland not to sanction whaling at this year’s IWC meeting!
