Urge Iceland to stop its cruel slaughter of whales
Dear Claudia,
Imagine you are on a whale watching trip, eyes scanning the horizon, waiting with bated breath for a glimpse of one of the most magnificent creatures on earth...
...only to watch in horror as the grace and beauty of a surfacing whale is destroyed by an explosive harpoon.
If only such a scene was as improbable as it sounds. But in Iceland, where the cruelty of whaling has already killed more than 200 whales this year - it's very real.
Please urge Iceland's Fisheries Minister to stop killing whales.
It's hard to believe that as tourists bundle up to board a whale watching boat docked in Iceland, whalers there are busy preparing their ships to slaughter these same incredible animals. Especially when you consider that much of the whale meat will end up in a freezer, unused.
In fact, only 1.1% of Icelanders claim to eat whale meat once a week or more (2006 Gallup poll). Whale watching, on the other hand, generates almost £5m a year for coastal communities in Iceland - a humane, sustainable and profitable alternative to whaling.
And yet Iceland's government, despite its current economic crisis, has increased the number of whales that can be killed - pushing threatened species like the endangered fin whale closer to extinction.
Twenty-six countries have joined together to file a formal expression of their deep disappointment with Iceland's decision. But now I need YOU to join them in expressing your outrage.
Every day during summer's peak season in Iceland, thousands of tourists spend their hard earned money in the hopes of witnessing the serene majesty of a whale. Let's make sure they still have something to see.
Thanks for taking action,
Fred O'Regan
IFAW CEO
P.S. There is no humane way to kill a whale. Whales can take more than half an hour to die after being harpooned. Please join me in telling the Icelandic government to end whaling now and work instead to protect its valuable whale watching industry.

A row has broken out in the north of England because fishermen are shooting seals that eat their fish.
The seals have learnt to take fish from the nets of the fishing boats. The fishermen say seals are costing them thousands of pounds every year.
The fishermen are allowed to shoot the fish if they have a licence, and if the seals are stealing their catch.
Some people don't think the seals should be killed, and want the rules changed so they are protected instead.
In other areas including Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man it's against the law to kill seals.
But in England, Scotland and Wales it's legal for fishermen to kill seals as long as they have a licence.
Tourists travel to see seals
In Northumberland thousands of people travel to the area to see the seals and some even swim with them. Those tourists spend a lot of money in the region.
The laws protecting seals in Scotland ARE being looked at but there are no plans to change the law in England - so seals in Northumberland will still have to take their chances.

A few weeks ago or so I asked if anyone would be kind enough to offer there first name and email address regarding a petition against the SEAL SLAUGHTER here in CANADA.
This petition is in paper form, and my previous post had an attachment of the petition but with many of you responding so kindly and compassionately, I don't wish too violate anyone's privacy by scanning it again and attaching it.
I am still in need of more names and email addresses so I can forward them to PETA or the “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals”.
Canada’s lovely federal government, who seems to think it is just A-O-K to murder Seals for there skin so it can be sold to counties such as China who then use it to wrap little trinkets in the shape of a seal or another animal as well use them for fashion, how disgusting, I can’t even type this without getting so angry.
As a final request, as I don't want to be a pest, if you or anyone you know would care to sign the petition by offering a first name and an email, web based or not, then I would be very appreciative of that.
The more we tackle this urgent issue in many facets, the better the chances this murderous industry will come to a halt and hopefully bankrupt.
I invite you to visit my profile and read about me as well, a video attached to my profile on how "I" personally feel about Animal Rights and Liberation.
Thank you in advance and I hope to hear from you.
Respectfully Yours in Solidarity for the Animals,
Nick J Davis
