In 2010 the global literacy rate, listed by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, was at 84.1%. While many countries pride themselves on educating their citizens, this is not always the case for others. In countries such as Chad, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Haiti, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Sierra Leone, the adult literacy rates are below 50%. As difficult as it is to understand that such a large section of its population is illiterate, in India there is a region where the literacy rate is an appalling, 36.9%! Ramadan is a time when most Muslims around the world observe 30 days of refraining from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. Many Muslims view this as a time to practice humility and submissiveness to Allah. But Ramadan also affords Christians a powerful time to not only pray for believers in Muslim-dominated countries, but also for the entire Islamic world. As a result, Open Doors USA is launching a prayer campaign, Pray in the Names of Jesus, during Ramadan, which runs from July 9 to Aug. 7. Sign up today to receive a free 30-day calendar and prayer guide.

On July 3, Open Doors went to Comitán City, located in Chiapas, Mexico, to visit expelled Christians from the Buena Vista Bawitz community. With only a small offering (a sack of corn, a box with 12 dozen eggs, 40 pounds of sugar and 3 pounds of coffee), the team wished they could have brought more. At the shelter, they found 12 families consisting of 46 people, including men, women and children. But as meager as the offering was, the team was welcomed with love and gratitude.
