Introduce Yourself Here December 17, 2005 12:13 PM

Good day to you all!  Are you a new member?  Are you back from a long absence?  Or do you just want other group members to know you better?  Well, you've come to the right place.  Feel free to introduce yourself and include as little or as much information about yourself as desired.

Speaking of which, this is a good chance for me to introduce myself.  My name's Camden, and I am a recent college graduate from the states.  My B.S. degree was in biology and German studies, and I have loved Giant Pandas since the age of one.  Eventually, I hope to pursue the study of animal behavior in graduate school and beyond.

So, now's your chance...  I look forward to meeting each and every one of you!

Take Care,

Camden

Hi there, I just joined yesterday.
Well I'd just like to quickly say that I'm a wildlife film-maker, from the UK but based in South East Asia for the last few years, since my focus is on Asian wildlife. My interests lie in all asiatic mammals, althouhg I must say I have a very soft spot for Leopards (big cats in general), Elephants, Jackals - and now... Bears!

My latest fascination with bears, and one species in particular has happened as a result of spending three months in the forests of Sri Lanka earlier this year, tracking Sloth Bears for a documentary I'm making about them. Now there's all sorts of horror stories associated with this bear, because they have a reputation for attacking first, and asking questions later - some of this is true, I met enough people who had been badly mauled by Sloth Bears to realise how aggressive they can be. But there's another side to them: charming, playful and extremely curious - you just have to respect their territory and play by their rules. I grew to become very fond of three individuals we saw often, and have to say that I miss them! But I'm going back next year to complete the filming, so hopefully will meet my friends again!

Anyway, glad to be here and look forward to participating in more discussions about bears!

Welcome to the group, Charith!  I'm so glad that you have joined us here.  Wildlife film-maker...  That sounds like so much fun!  I'm jealous.  I think that observing and filming animals would be so exciting.  It would seem to adventurous too, since you're actually in the wild.  I can't wait to hear some of your stories and input in discussions.  Take care, and I hope you enjoy the group.

Thanks a lot for the welcome!
I must admit, until I filmed Sloth Bears in the wild, all I knew about bears was what I gathered from those fantastic shows about Grizzlies in North America, and of course Polar Bears in the Arctic. But when I left the UK and started exploring Asia, was suddenly finding out about lesser known species like the Malayan Sun Bear for instance and of course the various races of Brown Bear that are dotted around the region.

The closest I've come to a Sun Bear has been a pawprint in the mud and scratches on a tree trunk. They inhabit thick jungle, so its very difficult to see them even if you spend a lot of time searchng for them.

Sloth Bears are also famous for their vanishing acts - in fact the only way we managed to film them was to time our field trip to coincide with the fruiting season of a particular tree that the bears go mad over - otherwise for the rest of the year, they just disappear. There are less than 300 sloth bears left in Sri Lanka, so the urgency to learn more about them is very high - will post some general info about them.

Namaste! December 20, 2005 7:51 PM

I love all bears but have an exceptional strong connection to polar bears - this developed recently after having a vivid dream where I was suckling off a mother Polar Bear.  She was enormous and I felt so safe curled up in her fur.  It has had a lasting effect on me

I'm of Irish/British descent but have spent most of my adult years living in Australia, India and the Greek Islands.  We have some sloth bears near here - I'm in Andhra Pradesh the very south of it.  When my partner and I went walkingin the hills a few years ago we could smell them and found their droppings but unfortunately the locals have started to do a regular burn of the scrublands and since then there has been no sign of them.

Very happy to meet you all!

Marisha, welcome to the group!  Polar bears must be my second favorite bear there is -- which of course, may be due to the fact that I spent quite a bit of time studying them.  It sounds like you've been to quite a few places, so I'm rather jealous of that.  I don't think I've ever seen a bear or even smelled their droppings in the wild.

Charith, the closest I've ever come to a Sun Bear is across the moat at the zoo.    Like I said before, me and my wild bear experiences are null.

Thanks again for joining, and I look forward to seeing you in the discussions.

Hi everyone September 07, 2006 4:20 PM

I'm Caroline. I'm originally from Australia, but I currently live in New Zealand.

I love all bears, especially the lesser known ones - Spectacled Bear, Sloth Bear, Asiatic Black Bear and Sun Bear.

I used to volunteer at a zoo in Australia, where I used to make enrichment items for the two resident Sun Bears. They came to the zoo from Asia where they were rescued from some very horrible circumstances. Zoos aren't the most ideal places for animals, but compared to where the bears came from, their zoo environment is paradise.

I currently co-sponsor (with my husband) an Asiatic Black Bear called Brandy through the Free the Bears organisation (www.freethebears.org.au). Brandy lives in their sanctuary in Cambodia.

Bear hugs to all

International Animal Rescue March 06, 2007 4:36 AM

Hello, I have just moved back to the States from the UK where I got my degree in Animal Behavior and Animal Welfare. I spent three months in India studying rescued dancing bears at a sanctuary funded by International Animal Rescue (www.iar-us.org). They are running an amazing project there and have rescued over 350 bears. 600 bears still remain on the streets of India, so the job of liberation has just begun. I have just opened the first International Animal Rescue office in America to help spread more awareness and try to save the remaining bears. Let me know if any of you want to get involved! Thanks, Laurence
