Wait: Rubio Isn’t Being Vetted For VP?

Even before the Republicans chose a presidential nominee it was widely assumed that Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., would be at the top of anybody's list of vice presidential candidates. The reasons are obvious: Not only is he young, charismatic and wildly popular with conservatives, but he could also help Republicans win a key state (Florida) and make inroads with Hispanics.

But knowledgeable Republican sources tell me that Rubio is not being vetted by Mitt Romney's vice presidential search team. He has not been asked to complete any questionnaires or been asked to turn over any financial documents typically required of potential vice presidential candidates.

Although it is possible that Rubio may yet be asked to go through the vetting process, it has been nearly two months since Romney named his long-time aide Beth Myers to run his vice presidential search. The fact that Rubio has not been asked to turn over any documents by now is a strong indication that he is not on Romney's short list of potential running mates.

Officially the Romney campaign has no comment. And Rubio has refused to make any comment when it comes to vice presidential questions. As Rubio spokesman Alex Conant told me, "We have no comment on the vice presidential search process."

The news will be disappointing to prominent conservatives - including Sen. Jim DeMint and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush - who have been openly encouraging Romney to pick Rubio.

This took me completely by surprise. Sure, I realized it was exceedingly likely Romney would pick someone else as his running mate, but the fact Rubio isn’t even being considered is truly shocking. As mentioned above, the Florida Senator has all the characteristics of a solid vice presidential pick, thus I just assumed he was at least on Team Romney’s short list. That’s simply not true, apparently. In any event, since both parties are staying mum on the subject, it’s impossible to know with certainty if the information in the ABC News article excerpted above is 100 percent accurate. Still, given the evidence that’s surfaced -- and the Senator’s vocal opposition to leaving his job in the upper chamber of Congress -- it seems unlikely Marco Rubio will be the next Republican vice presidential nominee.

Update: Mitt Romney confirms he is in fact vetting Senator Marco Rubio for vice president.

Neither has set anything one way or the other in cement, so I don't know why he'd suggest Rubio isn't even being considered. He could be being considered.  But, I really do feel we are at the point America needs West, and now. If we let this illegal issue slide, which I hate to say it, but Rubio will let do, already said as much if he's agreeing with Obama,  it will NOT get better for America, whether we like to hear it or  not, and sorry, but, things were a mess before BO did this, now making it even harder to help Americans, and Rubio agrees with it.  West is the only one who will do what it takes to get us headed back in the right direction, IMO, and that's what we've so desparately been looking for all this time, isn't it?

YES!!!! You are right on Sherry!!!

When Numbers USA has a problem with Rubio sticking up for illegals and amnsty then it's a PROBLEM! They watch all of the immigration issues CLOSELY!!!

I haven't seen that yet about NumbersUSA having a problem with Rubio. Perhaps I missed it while on vacation or was it just recently and I missed it in my email?  At any rate, that backs up my feelings on Rubio. But sounds like he's being pushed at Romney, which doesn't tell me anything good about the ones pushing Romney to ask him to be VP.

Actually Sherry I don't remember exactly when it was but it was shortly after Rubio mentioned the first time about backing the illegals and I can't remember if they sent another one out or not yet but I am sure they will if they haven't!!

Rubio Calls off DREAM Act, For Now

In response to the Obama Administration's announcement that it was circumventing Congress by unilaterally changing U.S. immigration law to allow over 1.4 million illegal aliens to remain in the country and work, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) told reporters that he no longer planned on introducing his version of the DREAM Act. At least not until after the November elections.

"People are going to say to me, ‘Why are we going to need to do anything on this now. It has been dealt with. We can wait until after the election,'" he said in an interview. (Wall Street Journal, June 18, 2012) "And it is going to be hard to argue against that." (Id.)

Sen. Rubio also expressed frustration over the President implementing his policy without consulting him. "We have never talked to anyone in the White House about their plans," he said. (Id.) "The only thing the White House has ever done about our ideas was to try to get some of the Dream Act kids [to] not work with us." (Id.) Rubio spokesman, Alan Conant, echoed his boss' sentiments in a separate interview. "Sen. Rubio was working hard to find a permanent solution to this issue, meeting with Republican Senators and Dream kid activists earlier this week, and we were not briefed — let alone consulted — before the Administration made his announcement." (The Hill, June 18, 2012)

Sen. Rubio had been talking about his plans to introduce a DREAM Act for months, but had yet to introduce any language. News reports indicated he planned on finally unveiling it sometime this month.

Claiming that voter removal by Florida would be illegal???  What's it called wanting illegals to vote???

And unless I saw Rubios language of a Dream Act now,....that's like saying you have to pass it before you can find out what's in it.  In otherwords if he is VP, and he and Romney win the election, he tells you what his version is after  he's got in.      No trust that one whatsoever.  He should know that, especially if he is considering VP at all.

Romney was against the "Dream Act" during the debates, now he won't answer the question about it.....he is damned if he is and damned if he isn't...he is boxed in on this one.  Amazing, the polls say 63% approve of what obama did...but I'm sure mostly liberals were polled.  But then, there are Republicans out there for it also.  I am not understanding how this will help our Country!!!  We allow the 30 and unders to remain in the USA, who we will take care of with unemployment, healthcare and food stamps.  If they do find jobs, then it only hurts those Americans who are out looking for jobs...even the teens cannot find work.  And we all know how the money that is made here is taken back to Mexico......that really helps our economy.  Why is it that honest Americans are the ones who get hurt by all of this?  Is there ever a 'win' for us?

I don't think Rubio will be selected as VP.  I really would like West, but not much is said about him at all.  I think it may be someone none of us know much about, kind of like Sarah Palin.....I had never heard of her before she was selected.  I guess now we will wait and see....but I think Romney already knows.

Well all of this is so miscombobbled up right now...so far I don't think Rubio qualifies to be a Vice President.....and I don't think Romney has the nomination secured yet....and I don't think Sarah Palin would take second spot on being Vice President....All this Amnesty does is make it legal for illegals to be in this country...it's not helping the job market at all and those who are made legal still won't do all the filing to pay taxes and everything...I still think the majority of them will work under the table so how does that help bring in more taxes!? It don't!!!!!! I think the situation with the delegates will have to be seen through until after the court vase is heard and decided after that all bets are off I think!!

Mitt Romney: ‘Only Beth Myers and I know who is being vetted’
UPDATE: Marco Rubio is being thoroughly vetted

Have you been following all the reports about whom Mitt Romney is considering for his running mate?

There have been press reports that the list includes:

  • Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty
  • Ohio Senator Rob Portman
  • Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan
  • Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal
  • New Jersey Governor Chris Christie
  • Florida Senator Marco Rubio
  • New Hampshire Kelly Ayotte
  • Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels
  • Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell
  • South Dakota Senator John Thune
  • Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush

And every once in a while there are reports that certain candiates are not being vetted. For example this morning, Jonathan Karl of ABC News reported that Senator Marco Rubio was not being vetted.

Don’t read too much into it, but after all the speculation surrounding the ABC news “scoop” about the campaign’s VP vetting process and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Mitt Romney told Sean Hannity that only he and Beth Myers know who is being vetted. Here’s an excerpt of this evening’s Mitt Romney interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News:

Hannity: “What did you make of the ABC News report this morning that said Marco Rubio was not being vetted but Governor Tim Pawlenty was being vetted? Any comment on that story?”

Mitt Romney: “I get a kick out of some of the speculation that goes on. I’m not going to comment on the process of course. But I can tell you this: only Beth Myers and I know who is being vetted.”

Hannity: “Does that mean Ann Romney doesn’t know?”

Romney: “Even Ann doesn’t know. We talk about the possible people that I might select. But in terms of actually who is being vetted, that is something only two people know. And Beth Myers doesn’t talk.”

Hannity:“Is there a shortlist?”

Romney: “There are a number of people who are being vetted and that is obviously the group we are considering most seriously.”

And what about Allen West...we don't hear much from him either....could silence be golden in tnis case!?

What better way to take away any idea of who you are vetting than to not mention them at all!?

I wish congress would get off their ass and make it clear what is required.  Sorry for Rubio, but I think it should at least be a second generation person to qualify for the presidency.

I agree with you Michael!! In Rubios case it is quite clear to me that he is not elligible for the Vice Presidency slot!

I just know that if it were West, I could breathe easier with Romney.

I would like to see West as well, but then again, the VP doesn't really do much.

I have mixed emotions on the Dream Act.  I agree that people who grew up here should be allowed to stay.  People who have actually created a life here, married, children, been secure in the job for a few years and at the same residence, I can't blame them because our govt didn't do their job.  I'm only talking about the ones where the money they earn stays in country and they have deep ties here.  I'll give an example, I know a Marine whose wife is an illegal.  She grew up here.  She only knows the USA as her home. She was brought here as a young child, educated here, married for years, has children and no home in Mexico.  And yet our govt tells her she has to go back to Mexico and apply the correct way in order to get citizenship!  I can't stomach the idea of deporting her to a country she doesn't know and no relatives to receive her.

Another example, I know a young man who came here when he was 14 or 15.  He learned English on his own, is one of the hardest workers I've ever seen, is now married to an American and last year had their first baby, a little girl.  He's been told if he supports Obama he could stay.  If he didn't, he would be deported.  I have become close to him.  I would adopt him in a second if it meant it would help him stay.  He's an awesome kid and I'm quite proud of him!  While he does have family in Mexico, I still couldn't deport him with a clear conscience.  He's worked very hard to fit in and all he wants to do is become an American, continue his education and do his part for the country.

I can't send people like that back to Mexico, South America or where ever it is they came from.  But I can with a very clear conscience, deport anyone that isn't living on their own, didn't even try to understand English, and has worked many jobs just to send money out of country.

Right now Obama has drones flying over the USA to spy on our own citizens.  Why aren't those drones flying the borders?  Why aren't we doing anything to stop the flow of illegals?  That's where the problem is!!!

That's true Michael and that is exactly why Obama and Holder and Pelosi want the borders wide open so he can get more votes! I can see what you are saying about those who you know have been here for awhile. If there are people who want to stay in America...have learned English...have made an effort to become a citizen...have gone into the Military to put their time in...and have conformed in every way possible to becoming an American and are not sending their money back home to Mexico or where ever then they should be able to go through the proper channels to become citizens..as long as they are paying their taxes and everything else like that. Those who are here popping out kids, sending money home to Mexico or where ever, are trying to get more family members here and living 5 families in one home all drawing some form of Welfare or getting paid under the table and any other sneaking coniving way then out they go along with the criminals!! Sooner or later something has to be done though because our country can't afford to have anymore immigrants coming in!!

I understand all that too and keeping thos as you mentioned here. But also like Carol says, sending home the ones using the system, and on that note, I don't care how long they've been here. This system can't, or won't, help many of our own people, giving preference in many cases, and BTW have been for years and years, to non Americans.

Should have added that the problem is many times increased now, on top of it,  because of this administration.
