I think Angela Jackson had a list of companies that use prison labour- I have been trying to locate it. Does anyone know a source. This and use of third world country poor in depressive work enviroments is a target for boycott. As large companies depend on such labours the need to maintain poor populations and prison populations to the required numbers exerts a strong effect on social and economic policies.
Are you saying that prison labour is enough to pay for prisons? Is the price charged by the prisons significantly less than the market price?

~I don`t think she is saying that. Hopefully she will post in more detail to answer your questions.~
In the meantime I`d like to contribute to this discussion. Prison labor is obviously cheaper for the Corporates. Not even counting "pay" to prisoners, 20 cents an hour average. Whatever the state gets it must be cheaper than doing business outside the walls or business wouldn`t bother with it. Not to mention having a captive workforce motivated by fear. Many state prisons punish inmates who refuse to work whether for sickness or fear of dangerous work.
Prisons may make profits from business but it certainly doesn`t stop them from getting millions in taxpayer monies in their yearly budgets anyway. So no, contracting inmate labor to outside business would not be paying for prison management/upkeep.
Another bad thing about an inmate workforce, it`s another form of outsourcing of American jobs.
Much, much more than license plates are made by inmates all over the U.S. and the world (Chinas inmate workforce is huge).
Offhand, I know that the Office Furniture business is almost completely inside the walls now, putting who knows how many small businesses and workers out in the cold.
Garment Manufacturing (Victoria Secret is just one), phone work, computer work, most any work that can be done outside can be done inside.
I look forward to seeing the companies our members find so we can boycott them for exploiting inmates and taking even more jobs away from Americans. Americans that may go on to commit crimes of desperation and find themselves being forced to work as prison labor.
As Donna says, it is not a matter of the labour in prisons paying for prisons - whether privatised or not the cost of prisons is born by tax payers, but the profits made by cheap prison labour goes to the companies using them. One I can remember from the list I saw some time ago is Unilever and also other cosmetics companies.
Hopefully we will find some list to keep us in formed. And yes Donna is quite right pointing out another loop - the loss of jobs due to cheap prison labour itself creates situations that leads to criminal activity in terms of property crimes.
This group is for discussions about Boycotting, so discussion is for that.
Earlier a post said human prisoners should not be given consideration since they raped, attacked or killed someone. In the first place that is only one segment of the millions of inmate population. In the second place, animals rape attack and kill as well but we don`t advocate exploiting/treating them in an inhumane way.
I suggest we extend the same courtesy to our fellow humans.
I made a similar response to you, but it got deleted as well. Obviously discussions about boycotting would include whether to boycott something, so they would include whether something is ethical or not. I would like to start a new thread on whether prison labour is ethics, or under what conditions it is ethical. I don't think I can do it in this thread as people may appear to be advocating prison labour.

If I condone you starting a thread on the "ethics" of prison labor, pro and con, then I have to allow threads on the ethics of animal testing, which of course I`m not going to do.
This group is for those who have evolved past acceptance of inhumane practices. If you (or anyone) have not, we simply do not have the time to educate you. We are busy working for change via boycotting, not trying to change the minds of those who do not have the sense to see.
This is certainly not the first time you, Freediver, have been advised (on this and other groups) to start educating yourself and stop expecting everyone to prove their position on an issue to you.
This is your responsibility, not ours. We have evolved past that.
You know you have a personal "ax to grind" with Donna and myself. I think it is extremely tacky of you to come in here and play the innocent victim. You have started your own Boycotts group, Is it not enough? Or is it that you simply want to fight and the people you wish to do that with are not in your group?
Thanks Spooky!
I haven't seen Solrey around lately..is he on sabbatical? I know at this time of year he's probably busy with his garden...but I miss his wisdom.
I had better wait for the other group members and hosts though..let's keep it real!

up to these days. Maybe he is as you say busy in the garden. I know my son and I spent all day yesterday working in our yard, with a few breaks at the hottest part of the day. Could be he met the lady of his dreams? I hope so. I miss him too though.
I agree w/Ravenstar I don't like to see censorship, and what is this comment about animal attacks ? I don't mean to attack and you can delete my post but that's absurd, that is either "law of the jungle" or humans being where they shouldn't be! And since when are animals treated humanely? We kill them for lunch and fur coats and use them for testing cosmetics, not to mention the crueltry perpetrated on them in the name of medical research! We take them out of their natural habitats and put them in zoos and circuses.
And as far as this discussion I was here to learn more about prison labour . Open forum indeed!
