Vital Issues Facing Animal Welfare June 08, 2010 5:28 AM

In a couple of days I am speaking in front of Colorado State legislature representing the animal welfare and animal rights community.  So I wanted to hear your thoughts about critical issues animals are facing today so I can better represent to community of people that care and want action to be taken by government.  So in this thread, please talk about what you think is important for me to bring up in my speech.  I welcome all your suggestions and hope to hear from you all.

Suggestion June 08, 2010 6:00 AM

Hi Brittany, i just wrote a big spiel on animal testing and my browser crashed......
First of all. Kudos to you for what you are doing. If i were standing in front of state officials, I would love to address animal testing of all sorts, Medical,Chemical,Cosmetics,Domestic. and ask why are we still continuing to do so, other alternatives have been invented but some companies refuse to except them... Why??

Animal lab testing is also one of my pet peeves. I recently received a survey from PCRM asking "did you know that?" and giving a "yes" or "no" answer to certain animal rights' questions. The first question is(and this is ver batim): "Did you know that the USA is the only developed country that still uses chimps in invasive research experiments?" I think this is outrageous, but I don't think PCRM gave a reason. There were several other questions as well. I filled it and mailed it in.

My suggestions for inclusion in your speech June 08, 2010 7:47 AM

Brittany: What a great opportunity to express the thoughts of the animal rights community! Godspeed! This is something no one seems to want to touch but I will express my feelings about it. I was born and lived in a small rural town in Louisiana called Marksville. There has been a tradition known as a "Cochon de Lait"(literally "milk pig"). The pig is butchered and there is a big party around the killing. There is also a festival called the "Cochon de Lait"held in Mansura, Louisiana. So Cochon de Lait is intertwined with tourism. I have never seen the pig killed. But my mother said that when she was a child and her dad(my grandfather) killed the pigs, they would squeal and squeal. I loved animals as a child also and when I saw the look on her face as she said this, my stomach did belly flops. Also, the parents take their young children in the woods to kill their first deer. It's a big tradition and family celebration. The children take a photo next to the dead animal and the newspapers print these horrid photographs. I cannot stand to look at them. I just want it known that instead of improving their minds through more productive hobbies these folks are out there killing.

Thanks Rosemary June 08, 2010 7:50 AM

They are still testing monkeys for gravity experiments Too. for space research. I don't think i could handle a gravity machine. let alone a small monkey or chimp.

Dear Brittany June 08, 2010 8:53 AM

Dear Brittany, this is a great opportunity ! Please, do not forget to mention pet abusers too. They really scares me. And cops, who kills home animals without thinking twice. And innocent dogs sentenced to death just because they belong to a breed considered dangerous, such as my beloved pitt bulls. And homeless people's pets. Beside all the other issues presented here, of course.
Thank you!

Hey Brittany, There are way to many to write about... Animal testing is a biggie. Also, Opt To Adopt instead of buy. Animal abuse in neighborhoods such as chaining etc. Propose instead of pet stores going up, have them be shelters or kennels instead. The list goes on and on......

The Fur Trade June 08, 2010 9:18 PM

This is another issue about animal welfare that I am passionate about.  I have always been fur free but when I found out how they get the fur from animals is when I became mad and determined to do something.  That is what my speech is about this Friday.  Wish me luck!!!

Excellent Topic June 09, 2010 6:58 AM

That type of subject matter is definitely a problem of deep concern. I don't travel in those type of social circles, but I imagine there are still those  in the upper set who still wear fur coats. These people who wear fur are so clueless. There are always alternatives to look glamorous and spare the lives of animals. Brittany, I wish you all the best.

I wanted to thank you all for your best wishes on my speech in front of legislature.  It actually went so well I was invited to a formal committee meeting to speak on behalf of animal welfare and animal rights.  I loved all of your ideas but at my first speech, I didn't have the time to cover them all.  I would love some more feedback for my next speech since I will have more time to cover more issues.
Thanks again you guys!!!

Wonderful News! June 15, 2010 6:32 AM

Congratulations Brittany! I wish you all the best on your next speech. A member of the local animal rights group sent a Letter to the Editor regarding hot temperatures and dogs. She said in hot weather doghouses do not provide shade and become minisaunas. I going from memory here, but I am almost positive she wrote that it can become overheated in a car for a dog even with the windows down. You probably know all this. And actually, I have been seeing a dog chained to a tree next to a small doghouse. I only observe him for a minute on a daily basis but I can't help thinking he doesn't get much attention or TLC from his owners. So I reported the situation to the agency yesterday. You may want to discuss that people might think they are providing care and shelter for their pets when they really aren't doing such a great job and ways to educate the public. Also, I personally prefer Trap, Neuter, Return programs to animal shelters. If you agree, perhaps you could discuss methods by which people's consciousness could be raised on this program and cheap ways to implement it for stray cats and dogs in rural areas that only have an Animal Control Officer. I know I ramble Brittany. Please tell me straight out if you would like me express my thoughts more conservatively in the future. Congratulations again Brittany!  Rosemary

I wanted to sincerely thank you all for your kind words and wishes for my speech.  It was scary but went well.  I discussed the fur trade and especially the fur trade in China.  That was all I really had time for.  I would love to hear other ideas so I can go speak again at a public meeting.
