500 dogs to die tomorrow Friday, 9:47 AM

*500 Dogs need your help!!!!***** please cross post widely

The greyhound track in Plainfield, CT voted on April 26th that they
would discontinue greyhound racing. Unfortunately - and
heartbreakingly - they've also decided that rescuers have only two
weeks to get the dogs out, and any dogs remaining at the track on May
14th will be euthanized. This is a monumental task because there
are at least 500 dogs currently at the track. These are all young,
healthy dogs, 2-4 years of age, who would make great family pets.

Greyhound racing is a business and because the track is no longer
profitable, they're getting out. To us, dogs are cherished
companions. To the greyhound racing industry, dogs are expendable
commodities to be disposed of in whatever way is
least expensive and most convenient when they aren't making money.
We've committed to saving as many dogs as we possibly can in the next
two weeks. We'll be working with an experienced greyhound rescuer who
has been placing retired greyhounds for many years. She will be going
to the track and bringing us dogs. As soon as we have more room,
we'll do it again. We will repeat as many times as we can before May
14th. After May 14th, there will be no dogs left alive at the track.
In order to save as many dogs as we can, we are going to try
something we've never done before; sending as many as possible out
into foster care by May 14th. Every time we send a dog into an
adoptive home or a foster home, we can take another dog off the
track. We will take the fostered dogs back into the Dakin Animal
Shelter for adoption over the next few months as spaces open up for
them - as long as they're off the track by May 14th, they'll be safe.

How can you help?

a.. Adopt a greyhound They're wonderful dogs - gentle, quiet, sweet,
and graceful. The ones we'll be getting will be good companions with
other dogs and with cats. Surprisingly, they're couch potatoes. They
do need to information on what it's like to take a greyhound home,
visit
b.. Foster a greyhound If we can send greys into foster care and out
of our Shelter, we can pull more from the track before May 14. We'll
get them back into the Shelter over the next few months. We will
provide all their medical care and a crate to make their transition
easier. You provide your time & love and together we will give them a
new life! For information on what it's like to take a greyhound home,
visit www.greyhoundgang.com.
c.. Donate money. We are going to need extra funds to help these
dogs. We'll be buying crates and other supplies as well as paying all
their medical bills. You can send a check to: Dakin Animal Shelter,
163 Montague Road, Leverett MA 01054, or donate online.
Please mark your donation "Save the Greys".
d.. Donate a large dog crate to send with the dogs going into foster
care.
e.. Spread the word! The more people who know about this tragedy, the
more help the dogs will get. There are a lot of misconceptions about
them.

This is a tragedy of enormous proportions, and we've decided to throw
everything we've got into doing as much as we can. It's easy to get
overwhelmed thinking about the scope of the problem - and do
nothing. If we instead work together as a community, we CAN make a
difference. The Dakin Animal Shelter has always relied upon our
community for our support, and we're counting on you now. With your
help, we WILL make a difference.

URGENT E-MAILS LONDON MAN KILLING STRAYS!!! May 14, 2005 6:32 PM

London man killing strays Friday, 9:38 AM

URGENT E-MAILS LONDON MAN KILLING STRAYS

Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. Urges London Citizens to Speak Out Against Steel Giant Lakshmi Mittal

 Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, owner of Mittal Steel Company Ltd. headquartered in London, England, is allowing a mass-slaughter of homeless animals at his steel plant Ispat Sidex in Galati, Romania.

Officials at Ispat International's SIDEX Steel Plant are poisoning and killing dogs in Galati by the thousands. Many of these dogs have already been spayed/neutered and vaccinated by a local animal welfare organization.  Plus, some of these dogs are owned by local residents.

The town of Galati has a huge dog overpopulation problem in general, with over 12,000 stray dogs roaming the streets. Over the past few years Romania Animal Rescue Inc. has been working with a local animal group to reduce the number of strays through a trap-neuter-release program.  This has resulted in a successful reduction of stray dogs, since there have been less litters of puppies born.

Because of the enormity of the stray problem throughout Galati, the poisoning of dogs at the Sidex plant will only result in other dogs migrating to that location.

Therefore, it is crucial that Mittal be convinced to work with us, so that the dog population can be controlled in a humane manner. Being one of the largest employers, if not the largest employer in Galati, Sidex is in the best position financially to help the entire city of Galati deal with this crisis by collaborating with Romania Animal Rescue, Inc.

Despite numerous letters and emails, officials at Mittal Steel Company Ltd have not responded to anyone, including Romania Animal Rescue, Inc., and refuse to comment on the mysterious disappearance of the dogs at the Sidex plant. Over a hundred letters have already been sent to Mr. Mittal from concerned people across the world to inform him of the tragedy occurring at his Romania plant, but he has not responded.

As Dana Costin, of Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. states, “SIDEX Staff refuse to make any official comment…while animal lovers  from Galatzi beg for justice to be done and those responsible to be punished, even if our poor furry friends cannot be brought back!"

Romanian newspapers have recently published articles about the mass slaughter of these stray dogs. Witnesses saw men from Sidex empty the dead animals out of a truck. There have also been disappearances of strays from the land where SIDEX is located and surrounding area to “unknown destinations.”

A local citizen witnessed almost 100 dead dogs being thrown in a pile about 2.5 Km. outside Galati by two local people. Further investigation determined that the dogs were poisoned. A number of the dogs found poisoned outside Galatzi match the description of dogs that had disappeared from the Sidex plant’s garden. Some Sidex workers even recognized their own pets among the dead bodies.

Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. is appealing to people throughout London to express their outrage to London businessman Mittal about the mass killings of stray dogs in Romania.

We ask that you contact Mr. Mittal at Ispat headquarters and urge him to work with the local animal welfare group to humanely deal with the huge overpopulation of stray dogs at the Sidex factory and throughout Galati.

Requests for further information should be directed to the Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. affiliate in Romania, Dana Costin at rolda@care2.com.

Class dissection of LIVE DOG Friday, 9:37 AM

Class Dissection Of Live Dog
Outrages Parents, Students
Student: 'It Just Makes Me Sick...'
May 12, 2005

UTAH--A biology class lesson in Gunnison, Utah involving the dissection of a live dog has outraged some parents and students, according to a report.

"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Biology teacher Doug Bierregaard said.

Biology teacher Doug Bjerregaard, who is a substitute teacher at Gunnison Valley High School, wanted his students to see how the digestive system of a dog worked.

Bjerregaard made arrangements for his students to be a part of a dissection of a dog that was still alive.

The dog was still alive, but the teacher said it was sedated before the dissection began.
With the students watching, the sedated dog's digestive system was removed.
"It just makes me sick and I don't think this should go on anywhere and nobody's learning from it," student Sierra Sears said.
The teacher said the lesson would allow students to see the organs actually working.
"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Bierregaard said.
The school's principal, Kirk Anderson, said notifications went to parents explaining the dog was going to be euthanized and that the experiment would be done with the dog's organs still functioning.
The teacher is standing by his decision and calls it the ultimate educational experience.
Principal Anderson said he supports the lesson and it will be allowed to continue because the students are learning.
The dog used in the experiment was going to be euthanized despite the class project.

DOGS to be KILLED if owner doesn't take responsibility! May 23, 2005 7:32 PM

Woman Attacked In Oakland By Pit Bulls

Two pit bulls are in quarantine and an Oakland woman is recovering from injuries sustained in an attack Monday morning in north Oakland.

. . . "Officers say they're investigating three dog bites this week alone. These pit bulls will be quarantined for ten days, and risk being euthanized only if the owner doesn't want them back."

http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/news/052305_nw_pitbull_attack.html

. . . We have to contact them and let them know that it is ALWAYS the "owners'"  fault & responsibility whenever  ANY dog bites ANYONE!!! . . . And that they cannot continue to be allowed to get away with these cases, scot free ~ while the dogs get killed for it!!! . . .

Just because these  "owners"  may decide not to take the responsiblity and not take the dogs back,  the dogs will get killed!!! . . . Is that right or fair!? . . . Please, let your voice be heard!!!

"Promoting these marine species is not responsible because they are not sustainably harvested. Disney should have the social responsibility to promote responsible consumption," said Clarus Chu of the World Wildlife Fund in Hong Kong....

BAN Live Hare Coursing in IRELAND February 03, 2005 9:59 AM

This came from my friend Francis K. who lives in Ireland, and is highly concerned about the practice of live hare coursing in his country, where so many of our ancestors hailed from as well.

Please copy this form letter and change it to suit your own feelings, and email to Minister Roche at the address given below in the form. Let us try to make th difference for these gentle unfortunate creatures.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Minister Dick Roche TD,
Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government,
Custom House,
Dublin 1,
Ireland
Email: minister@environ.ie
Tel: +353 (0)1-8882403
Fax: +353 (0)1-8788640
My dear Minister Roche,
I write to express my great disapproval of your licensing of hare coursing for yet another season.
I think it is highly unjust and undemocratic that your department has disregarded the views of 80 per cent of the Irish population where hare coursing is concerned.
Opinion polls carried out over the past three decades have repeatedly confirmed that a huge majority want this cruel blood sport banned. And it IS cruel.
Northern Ireland was stopped earlier this year with the introduction of a ban on the netting of hares. I call on you to urgently work towards enforcing a similar ban in your own area as well.
As it stands, the Republic not only allows this blood sport but it is also now accommodating two Northern clubs who were stopped from coursing in that jurisdiction.
As one of the majority who want the "protected" hare species spared the terrifying abuse of coursing, I call on you to grant no further licences to hare coursing clubs. Please make the current coursing season the final onem, if you cannot rescind the current licence.
Thank you for considering this very serious appeal. I believe without a shadow of a doubt that our higher Power disapproves intensely of this abuse of these beautiful & gentle creatures. And in beloved Ireland yet!
I look forward to your positive reply.
Most Sincerely,
Your name
Country
Police say 21-year-old Justin Aud tossed 3-year-old Pete, a basset hound, off the balcony at the Campus Apartments near Southeastern Illinois College.
Justin Aud faces charges of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, Injuring a Domestic Animal, and Cruelty to Animals. He's got a court date with a judge in his future. If Aud is found guilty of the charges filed against him he could be sentenced from 1 year, to 3 years in prison.
We petition that Aud face three years in prison and pay restitution for the vet.
charges for the dog.
Dear Mr. Wolf, Mr. Nelson, Sheriff Miller:
Please accept my comments regarding Justin Aud, 21, the Southeastern Illinois College student who threw a 3-year-old basset hound named Pete off the balcony of the Campus Apartments on February 5, 2005.
According to Rob Andress, one of the dog's guardians, Pete howled "as loud as he could for about 20 minutes. It was the most horrific noise I've ever heard."
Though no punishment will undo Pete's shattered leg joint--now held together with two screws and four pins--your serious response to this case can dissuade others from committing brutal acts against animals.
Please pursue the maximum three-year prison sentence for Aud's charges of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, Injuring a Domestic Animal, and Cruelty to Animals. Aud ought to undergo psychiatric evaluation and be ordered to pay restitution for veterinary treatment that includes the initial 2-1/2 hour surgery as well as subsequent surgeries for removal of the screws.
Aud displays an alarming absence of empathy. According to psychologist Stephanie LaFarge, the nation's first expert in court-mandated animal abuse counseling, "extreme cruelty toward animals is a marker for potential violence toward humans." Roger Depue, former chief of the FBI's behavioral lab, says most of America's infamous killers, including Jeffrey Dahmer, honed their fury with animal torture.
Kip Kinkel, the 17-year-old convicted of killing two Springfield, Oregon classmates and his parents, joked about blowing up squirrels with cherry bombs. His recurrent rage toward animals was ignored.
The legal system cannot afford to overlook the link between cruelty to animals and human violence. All crimes that depict a ruthless disregard for life deserve serious penalties. Justin Aud's callous behavior caused a living being to endure great pain and anguish.
Thank you for your valuable time and consideration in this serious matter.
Sincerely,
(http://www.oozemagazine.co.uk/romsavagery.htm) February, in Matasari ( a small village near Tg-Jiu, 30 km distance) will take place an action, organized by the mayor of that village, of shooting the stray dogs. This kind of action took place the last two years on 8th of February also. I think you remember that last year we sent on the Internet pictures with what happened there and also we put some details on the web site.
Me, my father, together with two girls from two local
newspapers went there, in Matasari.
On Friday night my mother (Carmena Serbanoiu - president of Pro Animals, Tg-Jiu, Romania) received a secret phone call that on Saturday, 7th of
What we saw is beyond imagination: people that receive social help from the city hall , armed  with shovels, stones, clubs, in their hands, were chasing the stray dogs (were hitting them in the heads) between the blocks and forward them towards the hunters who were shooting them. There were nightmare scenes that may seem incredible. The dogs that had been shot were collected by those people and their corpses were put into a trailer and carried away.
(continued)
 [ send green star]  [ accepted]
Continued . . . June 01, 2005 3:44 PM
We tried to stop all this slaughter but it was impossible. It seemed that all the inhabitants were involved in this,it was like a uprising. No one listened to us, people (if I can call them this) were behaving very badly, rude to us, some tried even to hit us and our car to scare and threaten us. We were just four and they were an entire village.
My father filmed some scenes. But, he couldn't do more because the driver of the trailer tried many times to run over him with the trailer. Also the hunters headed the gun towards us, threaten us and wanted to take my father's camera. He managed to film  a little inside the trailer, which was full of dead dogs. To be honest, I was shocked, I couldn't believe people can be so savage, one can see their hate in their eyes. It was scary all this. We felt so helpless.
Afterwards, we went to the city hall and to the police from Matasari. We saw the documents where the mayor, Gaspar Gheorghe, asked the Hunters Agency's  help for shooting the dogs. It's all on the papers.
The two girls from the local newspaper wrote articles today. And also an article appeared in a national newspaper "Evenimentul zilei".  We are trying to contact some national  and international newspapers.
Last year we made intimations about this, at the Court of Law, at the
Police, at some Ministers etc but nothing was done then.
I will start sending e-mails about this and ask people write a fax to that mayor, Gaspar Gheorghe, and also write e-mails to the Prefect of Gorj and to the prime minister.
 Please, we are asking you to write a fax to the mayor of Matasari, Gaspar Gheorghe, and say that you were informed about this (about how people were used to chase dogs and beat them with shovels, clubs , stones and how hunters shot them), that you'll inform people all over the world, the prefect and the prime minister of Romania about this. That you hope he will be punished for what he did, that it's against any law.
Fax : 0040 253 376304 ( let
it ring more, the fax tone enters after the phone will ring several times)
Also send an e-mail to the prefect of Gorj county ( who is also responsible
for what happened) and to the prime minister( he is a well known hunter).
All three are from PSD party (whose policy is to exterminate the dogs as soon as possible -for example, last year in December on the local TV post was invited a very influent person from PSD. An inhabitant from Matasari called and asked him, live, what he can do with the stray dogs because he can't stand them anymore. That person from PSD said on TV that the inhabitants from Matasari should put their hand on clubs and hit the dogs in their heads and kill them all)
Pakistan to use strychnine on 100,000 dogs 5/30--please send e-mail June 01, 2005 3:47 PM
Authorities need to hear from you BEFORE May 30, at which time they will otherwise likely move ahead with their alleged plans to poison as many as 100,000 dogs.
Thousands of stray dogs who have long roamed the streets of Karachi, Pakistan, may soon be the target of an extensive and cruel campaign to eliminate them, according to news reports.
According to one Pakistani humane agency, the city of Karachi’s “nazim,” or mayor—despite being advised that reducing animal populations and preventing the spread of rabies requires long-term strategies, not ineffective quick fixes—has ordered his chief health officer to secure enough capsules of strychnine to kill all of the city’s homeless dogs.
Strychnine poisoning is a notoriously cruel and violent method of killing homeless animals. According to the 2000 Report of the American Veterinary Medical Association Panel on Euthanasia—the veterinary-medical authority on euthanasia—strychnine is an unacceptable agent of euthanasia for animals because it causes violent convulsions and painful muscle contractions. Animals poisoned with strychnine die slowly of suffocation.
Please send polite e-mail messages to Karachi’s nazim and urge him to resolve this situation in a humane manner by implementing the following policies:
• Animals removed from the streets must be kept in adequate, clean conditions.
• Injured and sick animals must be fully treated or euthanized by lethal injection.
• Healthy animals must be sterilized and vaccinated prior to release.
• Wide-scale sterilization and vaccination programs must be implemented to address this longstanding crisis.
• Animals must not be poisoned—all reports of such activity must be investigated, and suspected offenders must be prosecuted under the nation’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1890.
Please help RI ban the gas chamber for animals June 01, 2005 3:49 PM
May 23, 2005 12:59 PM
(I am forwarding this from a Yahoo group as I think it is important, so—sorry but I don’t have any more information.)
I am hoping that you might all spare the time to email the town council of Smithfield RI who are adamantly trying to keep the gas chamber at the shelter, even though the public don't want it. As you all are aware, it is very difficult to get people to write/phone/email, and we need the council to know that there are people out there who want these chambers banned. Below this note you will find the email I sent to all our local contacts and below that, a letter that you could personalize, cut and paste to the town council members listed below. If you do email, please don't say that you are from out of
town. I am involved in legislation that will ban gas chambers in the whole state. We have 2 bills going through the state house at this time.
Any help that you can give our homeless animals by emailing our town council is greatly appreciated…
(
Smithfield, RI)
The Smithfield police chief has asked the Town Council to support keeping the gas chamber, and apparently he will be turning up at the State House to give testimony armed with a letter from the council. Although he is only one person, we feel that the Town Council need to be reminded that his opinion is not in line with the taxpayers
and voters.
We now need to step up the pressure and contact the Smithfield Town Council and Town Manager. Apparently they aren't listening to the taxpayers and voters.
The Smithfield shelter comes under the jurisdiction of the Smithfield police department. The Smithfield police chief, William McGarry is not a resident, taxpayer, or voter in Smithfield, he lives in Saunderstown. Saunderstown comes under the jurisdiction of the
North Kingstown Animal Control, that DOES NOT have a gas chamber.  Chief McGarry will be retiring next year, at which point he won't be in charge of the shelter.
We do not believe that someone who doesn't pay taxes, chooses not to live in town, and isn't eligible to vote in our community, should have any say in how our shelter euthanises animals, especially when his own shelter uses lethal injection by a licensed veterinarian.
He is a very, very stubborn man who won't be told how to run his shelter by a bunch of "hysterical women". Well guess what, we can be equally stubborn! We don't want our animals being gassed. Period.
I know that these emails are coming frequently, and I know that a lot of you are email and telephoning representatives because I have been in touch with the State House who have said that they are getting lots of heat, so to all of you who have taken the time to
help the animals, thank you, thank you, thank you. Please give the animals your continued support, this legislative year will be ending soon, so we don't have much time left. Please forward this to ALL your contacts.
I have attached a letter that you can forward on to the town council and town manager.
Dear
I am writing to inform you of my support for the immediate ban of the gas chamber at the Smithfield animal shelter. Gas chambers are outdated, unprofessional, and cruel. They also pose a very real health threat to the municipal employees who are required to operate
them. I do not want my taxes used to support this method of euthanasia.
Senator Tassoni of Smithfield and Representative Lima have both introduced bills that will ban gas chambers at all municipal shelters in Rhode Island and I will be giving my full support to both of these legislators.
The time has come to listen to your community, we have been demanding the end to gassing in our shelter for over 2 years, and as a voter I will be watching closely for your open support of this issue.
Sincerely,
Letter to Beijing Authorities regarding news of the legalization of dog slaughter in Beijing
Following a story in "Beijing Daily" on 29 March 2005, that the Beijing authorities had issued certificates for dog meat-hygiene and slaughtering to butchers and slaughter houses, thus legalizing the slaughtering of dogs for meat in China, Animals Asia immediately responded with the following letter to the authorities in Beijing. You can do your part by forwarding the letter onto the Chinese Embassy nearest you.
Dear Sir/Madam,
We are deeply concerned to learn that the Beijing authorities have recently issued certificates which give approval to dog butchers and slaughterhouses and which now legally allow the sale of dog meat for human consumption.
Animals Asia represents many thousands of animal welfare supporters across the world, including China, who support responsible regulations and legislation which protect wild, domestic and endangered species from suffering and abuse. In recent years, the animal welfare community in China has developed and grown, with an increasing number of groups and local citizens championing a basic respect of all species and gaining significant approval as a result from the local and international arena.
The number of dog and cat owners in China has escalated, and is now seeing a growing and profitable market in a wide variety of locally made and imported pet supplies, including medicines, petfoods and toys. The growth of print, television and radio media stories, together with the expansion of petshops across the country, all devoted to the promotion of companion animals, is gaining wide interest locally within China towards the benefits of opening our homes to dogs and cats, and placing China firmly in the position of a country which is developing a harmonious attitude towards the animals which share our every day lives.
The news of Beijing regulating the dog meat trade will have serious consequences - not only angering and upsetting millions of dog owners in China, but seriously damaging the image of the country as a whole in the eyes of the international community who strongly believe that
dogs - and cats - provide valuable assistance and companionship to the human species and are very much considered our friends, rather than food.
Across the world, including Asia, dogs are recognised today as fundamental to the well being of human kind. They help us in times of war and disaster, and their incredible ability to "sniff out" a whole range of substances which would do us harm; including explosives and narcotics, is well documented by customs officials across the world who work side by side with this enthusiastic, intelligent and beneficial species.
Studies are coming to light which show that dogs are now capable of detecting cancers in patients earlier than conventional medical tests, and scientific papers abound showing that simply being in the company of dogs has far reaching physical and mental benefit to a wide range of patients, through sharing the unconditional love of a species which has rightly earned the accolade of man's best friend.
The cruelty of the dog and cat meat trade in China has been widely publicised over the years by a large number of local and international animal welfare groups. The Animals Asia team regularly document scenes of horrific abuse in live animal markets across the country - particularly to the species of dogs who are now enjoying protection against such atrocities in a growing number of countries in Asia - including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and the Philippines. The method of slaughter is tragically cruel and markets in China reveal killing methods which leave both dogs and cats are inherently different in temperament and physiology to domestic livestock species more commonly raised intensively en-masse for food. Our investigations show that much damage is inflected through aggression and fighting when dogs are raised together under intensive and highly stressful conditions, and we draw your attention to a statement by a representative of the Hong Kong Government Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department . . .
. . . who maintains that dogs cannot be humanely raised and slaughtered for food. More recently, in line with several other countries of Asia, Taiwan has also not only banned the practice of dog eating, but is now levying significant penalties on those who choose to ignore the law.
Today, Beijing's move to regulate the slaughter of dogs will now escalate the increasing criticism of China's practice of dog and cat meat consumption and further damage the country's image abroad - particularly as the date for the Beijing Olympic Games in August 2008 draws near.
We urge you to withdraw this legalisation of the dog meat industry and to follow the example of other countries of Asia who have adopted wide-ranging protective measures of companion animals and who promote far reaching education programmes of responsible pet ownership, rabies awareness and stray dog and cat control. In this context, Animals Asia and the groups with whom we work in China would be pleased to cooperate with you at all levels and look forward to your early response to our request.
Yours sincerely,
Jill Robinson MBE
Dear President Roh Moo-Hyun,
I am appalled to learn that the Korean Government is planning to introduce a policy on the hygienic control of dog meat. This will only pave a way towards a legal means of doing business for the illegal dog meat trade and greatly encourage the consumption of dog meat. I am genuinely distressed when I think of the devastating effect that this policy will have on countless loving Korean dogs and cats that are already dying in the millions every year. This is the result of the government's total failure to either close down the dog meat restaurants or educate the public about the fraudulent health claims responsible for the senseless and shameful slaughter of these animals.
Government officials have, by their own admission, acknowledged that this is an unpopular move and have admitted there is no consensus, and certainly no mandate from the Korean public to further legitimize the dog meat trade. Why the government should be seeking to appease a small minority of dog-eaters is therefore beyond anyone's comprehension. If the Korean government is truly committed - as it claims - to reduce animal abuse, then it should stop immediately all measures designed to legitimize dog meat consumption. Instead, it should incorporate all dogs and cats within the definition of "companion animals", and then do everything it can to strengthen and especially enforce the existing animal protection law. No-one will be fooled by the Korean government paying lip-service to the idea of animal protection whilst simultaneously attempting to legalize the vile trade in dog meat.
Dogs and cats are not a main source of food in Korea, like cows or chickens, few Koreans eat them for any reason other than for fraudulent health benefits. They have much more in common with bears and tigers who's body parts are also sold in another illegal and shameful industry. The dog meat trade is an industry based upon consumer fraud and cruelty to animals. It is your duty to protect both animals and consumers from this illegal industry by enforcing the law and educating the public.
As President, you have power to stop your government's unfortunate and ill-judged attempts to legalize the dog meat trade. Failure to do so will bring about the greatest shame yet upon your country and even more misery to millions of Korean animals.
Sincerely,
MA Legislation re: Rescues . . . June 01, 2005 5:06 PM
May 11, 2005 9:28 AM
Hi! I am crossposting this from another list and is important to understand and voice your concerns if you live in MA. Many of the regulations are good and necessary, but compliance with some of the regs could be very difficult, especially in the case of stray dogs or other situations here a dog's origin is unknown.
MASS. REGS: What the DOA wants from rescues
Here's a list of some of the standards the MA Dept. of Agriculture wants to impose on rescues.  They appear to be approaching these in a devise manner so far.  For example, Great Dog Rescue of Andover had tried to comply with the standards below (and as gone to great expense to renovate their holding area) but the Dept. keeps finding fault.  The consensus is that the state's true intention is to end private rescue in MA.
Please send this information to anyone you have on your list.  Letter writing and public attention will help!  They've kept this quiet so far, and it should not be so any longer.  People like Lori DaMaso are being singled out being given very ambiguous and impossible standards to follow and these small rescues are not able to afford to fight this alone.  The website below has a listing of the current standards the state wishes to put into effect. (I've also pasted them below).  I'm adding a list of people to contact in the gov. at the end of the letter.
Thanks so much!  Lori
http://caninecoalition.com/
All Rescues, Shelters and Animal groups are going to be held to the same standards and regulations as Massachusetts Pet Shops. Rescues seem to meet their definition of a Pet Shop - "Pet Shop. A place or premises where birds, mammals, or reptiles are kept for the purpose of either wholesale or retail sale, import, export, barter, exchange, or gift." It does not matter if your Rescue is a non-profit, 501(c)3 federally tax exempt and/or registered with the Attorney General's Charities Division.
There seem to be three major issues that the Department is wanting compliance from Rescues:
Recordkeeping - every Rescue has to have on file thorough records on where the dog has come from, where it has been housed prior to arriving in MA, and where it goes. Each Rescue must also keep thorough medical records on each dog. Currently, Pet Shops must allow their records and facilities to be open for inspection by agents of the Department, the M.S.P.C.A. and/or the Animal Rescue League of Boston. Isolation - every dog coming into MA has to be isolated for 72 hours in a Department approved facility. So far, the Department has indicated their Inspectors must physically visit each facility and it must be up to Pet Shop facility regulations in order to be approved (see links below). It doesn't matter if the dog is from AK, CT or Timbuktu - it must be isolated before going into an adopter's or foster's home. Vet check - every dog needs to have a MA licensed vet give a health exam and certificate for each dog at the end of the 72 hour isolation period (this is in addition to the required point of origin health certificate each dog receives for their transport INTO Massachusetts).
You probably get many many calls from people wanting to surrender their wolf/hybrids or wolves over to you.  I have a very unusually situation.  I volunteered for Never Cry Wolf Rescue in Sacramento and recently they have been cited for too many wolves and have been ordered to get rid of wolves... There are three very special wolves that can not be adopted out they are 100% grey wolves and were rescued from a couple in Oregon.  These wolves came to NCWRA and if a placement can not be found for them the rescue is going to put them down.  I was hoping you might be interested in taking on three more wolves.  Badger the lighter wolf is very friendly with people and has no problems.  She is spayed and has no other wolf to partner with and would love a companion.  I saw where Tamaka is in need of a companion.  As you can see Badger means alot to me and I'll do everything I can to get her placed instead of being put down.
The two blacks (Lady Hawk and Blackhawk ) are a pair and stay together.  Black hawk is a sweetie, but tends to stay back a ways because of direction of Lady Hawk....Lady Hawk tends to keep her distance a little and can be friendly but prefers just to stick her nose into things out of curiosity and not really want to be touched by humans.  Which is understandable.
I could go on and on about these animals, but thought I would send you photos instead.  If there is a slim chance you might be interested please let me know.  If not, I totally understand!  Thank you in advance for reading this message....
Walk in peace, light, love and happiness always
Class Dissection Of Live Dog
Outrages Parents, Students
Student: 'It Just Makes Me Sick...'
May 12, 2005
UTAH--A biology class lesson in Gunnison, Utah involving the dissection of a live dog has outraged some parents and students, according to a report.
"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Biology teacher Doug Bierregaard said.
Biology teacher Doug Bjerregaard, who is a substitute teacher at Gunnison Valley High School, wanted his students to see how the digestive system of a dog worked.
Bjerregaard made arrangements for his students to be a part of a dissection of a dog that was still alive.
The dog was still alive, but the teacher said it was sedated before the dissection began.
With the students watching, the sedated dog's digestive system was removed.
"It just makes me sick and I don't think this should go on anywhere and nobody's learning from it," student Sierra Sears said.
The teacher said the lesson would allow students to see the organs actually working.
"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Bierregaard said.
The school's principal, Kirk Anderson, said notifications went to parents explaining the dog was going to be euthanized and that the experiment would be done with the dog's organs still functioning.
The teacher is standing by his decision and calls it the ultimate educational experience.
Principal Anderson said he supports the lesson and it will be allowed to continue because the students are learning.
The dog used in the experiment was going to be euthanized despite the class project.
London man killing strays May 13, 2005 9:38 AM
Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. Urges London Citizens to Speak Out Against Steel Giant Lakshmi Mittal
 Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, owner of Mittal Steel Company Ltd. headquartered in London, England, is allowing a mass-slaughter of homeless animals at his steel plant Ispat Sidex in Galati, Romania.
Officials at Ispat International's SIDEX Steel Plant are poisoning and killing dogs in Galati by the thousands. Many of these dogs have already been spayed/neutered and vaccinated by a local animal welfare organization.  Plus, some of these dogs are owned by local residents.
The town of Galati has a huge dog overpopulation problem in general, with over 12,000 stray dogs roaming the streets. Over the past few years Romania Animal Rescue Inc. has been working with a local animal group to reduce the number of strays through a trap-neuter-release program.  This has resulted in a successful reduction of stray dogs, since there have been less litters of puppies born.
Because of the enormity of the stray problem throughout Galati, the poisoning of dogs at the Sidex plant will only result in other dogs migrating to that location.
Therefore, it is crucial that Mittal be convinced to work with us, so that the dog population can be controlled in a humane manner. Being one of the largest employers, if not the largest employer in Galati, Sidex is in the best position financially to help the entire city of Galati deal with this crisis by collaborating with Romania Animal Rescue, Inc.
Despite numerous letters and emails, officials at Mittal Steel Company Ltd have not responded to anyone, including Romania Animal Rescue, Inc., and refuse to comment on the mysterious disappearance of the dogs at the Sidex plant. Over a hundred letters have already been sent to Mr. Mittal from concerned people across the world to inform him of the tragedy occurring at his Romania plant, but he has not responded.
As Dana Costin, of Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. states, “SIDEX Staff refuse to make any official comment…while animal lovers  from Galatzi beg for justice to be done and those responsible to be punished, even if our poor furry friends cannot be brought back!"
Romanian newspapers have recently published articles about the mass slaughter of these stray dogs. Witnesses saw men from Sidex empty the dead animals out of a truck. There have also been disappearances of strays from the land where SIDEX is located and surrounding area to “unknown destinations.”
A local citizen witnessed almost 100 dead dogs being thrown in a pile about 2.5 Km. outside Galati by two local people. Further investigation determined that the dogs were poisoned. A number of the dogs found poisoned outside Galatzi match the description of dogs that had disappeared from the Sidex plant’s garden. Some Sidex workers even recognized their own pets among the dead bodies.
Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. is appealing to people throughout London to express their outrage to London businessman Mittal about the mass killings of stray dogs in Romania.
We ask that you contact Mr. Mittal at Ispat headquarters and urge him to work with the local animal welfare group to humanely deal with the huge overpopulation of stray dogs at the Sidex factory and throughout Galati.
Requests for further information should be directed to the Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. affiliate in Romania, Dana Costin at rolda@care2.com.
*******please cross post widely
The greyhound track in Plainfield, CT voted on April 26th that they would discontinue greyhound racing. Unfortunately - and heartbreakingly - they've also decided that rescuers have only two weeks to get the dogs out, and any dogs remaining at the track on May 14th will be euthanized. This is a monumental task because there are at least 500 dogs currently at the track. These are all young, healthy dogs, 2-4 years of age, who would make great family pets.
Greyhound racing is a business and because the track is no longer profitable, they're getting out. To us, dogs are cherished companions. To the greyhound racing industry, dogs are expendable commodities to be disposed of in whatever way is east expensive and most convenient when they aren't making money.
We've committed to saving as many dogs as we possibly can in the next two weeks. We'll be working with an experienced greyhound rescuer who has been placing retired greyhounds for many years. She will be going to the track and bringing us dogs. As soon as we have more room, we'll do it again. We will repeat as many times as we can before May 14th. After May 14th, there will be no dogs left alive at the track.
In order to save as many dogs as we can, we are going to try something we've never done before; sending as many as possible out into foster care by May 14th. Every time we send a dog into an adoptive home or a foster home, we can take another dog off the track. We will take the fostered dogs back into the Dakin Animal Shelter for adoption over the next few months as spaces open up for them - as long as they're off the track by May 14th, they'll be safe.
How can you help?
a.. Adopt a greyhound They're wonderful dogs - gentle, quiet, sweet, and graceful. The ones we'll be getting will be good companions with other dogs and with cats. Surprisingly, they're couch potatoes. They do need to information on what it's like to take a greyhound home, visit
b.. Foster a greyhound If we can send greys into foster care and out of our Shelter, we can pull more from the track before May 14. We'll get them back into the Shelter over the next few months. We will provide all their medical care and a crate to make their transition easier. You provide your time & love and together we will give them a new life! For information on what it's like to take a greyhound home, visit www.greyhoundgang.com.
c.. Donate money. We are going to need extra funds to help these dogs. We'll be buying crates and other supplies as well as paying all their medical bills. You can send a check to: Dakin Animal Shelter, 163 Montague Road, Leverett MA 01054, or donate online. Please mark your donation "Save the Greys".
d.. Donate a large dog crate to send with the dogs going into foster care.
e.. Spread the word! The more people who know about this tragedy, the more help the dogs will get. There are a lot of misconceptions about them.
This is a tragedy of enormous proportions, and we've decided to throw everything we've got into doing as much as we can. It's easy to get overwhelmed thinking about the scope of the problem - and do nothing. If we instead work together as a community, we CAN make a difference. The Dakin Animal Shelter has always relied upon our community for our support, and we're counting on you now. With your help, we WILL make a difference.
CHINA PREPARES FOR 2008 OLYMPICS
In preparation for the Olympic Games to be held in Beijing in 2008, China has decided that it is time to tackle the problem of stray dogs. Due to fears of rabies, these animals are not generally eaten and have become widespread in some cities. Instead of introducing a plan of spay and neuter as has been done in many more civilised countries, the Chinese solution is far more immediate and, not surprisingly, brutal. The photos on this page were taken in Cixi between 10th and 16th October 2004 where an unverified estimate of 40,000 dogs were slaughtered.
Long poles with a wire loop at one end are used by dog-wardens throughout the world as an efficient and safe method of catching dogs. But this is China and this device is put to a particularly Chinese use........
Here the operation is performed by a two man team. While one man holds the dog helpless with his pole, his partner beats it to death with his.
Not only is this done legally, but these men (police and volunteers) are paid a bounty by the local authorities for every dog they kill. All of which lends serious doubt to China's claimed intention to introduce animal welfare legislation.
These bands of killers roam the city streets slaughtering any dogs they find. Pet dog ownership is not encouraged in China, due both to the Chinese obsession with eating anything that moves, and to Mao Tse Tung's declaration of them to be a symbol of the bourgeoisie. (Registration costs around US$125 with an annual renewal of US$62. Average annual income is around US$3,000.) These dogs also are not safe however. Any dog found on the street is immediately killed.
This is soon to be repeated throughout China, with the blessing and encouragement of the national government.
The words below were written by a concerned Chinese student.
really wanna everybody know what's happened and happening to all animals in China.  and hoping can make some changes for animals'uture. Honestly, I m a chinese and study in UK for four years. Iove animals and I have a dog in China and in uk as well. I  saw how they kill the unregistered dog by my own eyes. My heart I was hurt deeply.
Maybe you not understand why they kill unregistered dog. In my
opinion,  the reason is simple, for money. One dog registration fee
is nearly 500 pound for the first year and 200 pounds for every year
after. but look, everybody knows the labour is cheap in China, 500
pound maybe is the income for one person for whole year. people cannot afford it.my dog is six years old this year, and i paid nearly 1500 pounds for the registration fee. every time when i pay for it, I
always struggle. It's really too much.  but after the goverment get
the money, what did they do. they did not even provide one dog's trash in the city. they use this money to set up a team to kill the
   unregistered dogs in order to force other dog owners to pay for their dogs, that's the story. the case I sent to u is for the same reason. In the end of next month, there an othe toursim city Yunnan going to 'clean' all the dog in the city. after that date, any dogs appear, they will be killed. and that is for keep the city clean and ready to welcome tourists, what a funny reason. Okey, I finish here. best regard and really thanx for ur concern.
As well as the  Travel China Guide  website:
Dear_____:
      We, the undersigned, join forces with the Canadian Voice For Animals, and their branches in the United Kingdom, Argentina, Turkey, Romania, and the United States of America, in urging you to re-consider the current solution of destroying the stray dogs and other animals of Beijing.
       We are hereby boycotting the Chinese Olympics in 2008, as well as ALL Chinese products, services, and any/all travel to China or use of Chinese airlines until the brutal treatment & senseless killings of stray animals end, once and for all!
      The life of a stray in the best of health is very short if it is living on the street and relying on good Samaritans for food and health care. The games being four years in the offing, a spay/neuter and release programme would in the long-run solve the problem of stray dogs and cats.
      Please, we urge you strongly, to consider this alternative solution and, in so doing, show the world that China really is a great nation and that it does have a heart.  And that it  is  worthy of our patronage once again!
      We are looking forward your prompt response and to, hopefully, being able to once again support the Chinese Olympics and return to patronizing China and Chinese products & services!!
Most sincerely yours,
I
am disgusted and shocked to hear that your company 'Opresa'
deliberately destroyed a stray dog refuge run by Rosalinda Figueroa
Castillo in Cancun. This place was a sanctuary for the street dogs,
rescued from starvation and neglect.
Many dogs were buried alive
by mechanical diggers and the ones that were not were kicked and beaten
by your workers. This is unnacceptable cruelty and barbaric beyond
words.
Not only this, the lady and her son were also beaten and
assaulted. dislocating the womans shoulder.Attacking a defencless woman
and animals only goes to show how low Opresa Construction Company will
stoop in their greed and no amount of PR will ever redeem your
company's demonstrated cruelty and inhumanity.
Word has spread
about this cruel and callous act and I would suggest that you keep your
promise to Rosalinda Figueroa Castillo to build her a new shelter in an
attempt to redeem yourselves.
Regards
Soy
repugnado y soy sacudido para oír que su compañía 'Opresa' destruyó
perros de la calle, rescatado del hambre y el descuido.
Muchos
perros se enterraron vivos por excavadoras mecánicas y por los que no
crueldad de unnacceptable y bárbaro más allá de palabras.
No
inhumanidad.
La palabra ha esparcido acerca de este acto cruel y
calloso y yo sugeriría que usted mantiene su promesa a Rosalinda
Figueroa Castillo para construirla un refugio nuevo en una tentativa
para redimirlos.
Consideraciones
~~~~~~~

Kathy! Unthinkable...

here is what I wrote to this callous company.

Thank you for bringing it to our attention! I will post in Canines' Best Friends too!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sires queridos de Opresa,
Esto es un mal, cosa malvada que su compañía ha hecho.
No
puedo escribir buen español, sino que le digo que, que qué usted ha
hecho a esta mujer Rosalinda Figueroa Castillo y ella rescató los
perros que sufrieron también cuando su compañía empujó hacia abajo el
abrigo y mató a los perros y lastimó a los que vivieron con este
ataque, era una cosa malvada a hacer.
El dios ve seguramente lo
que usted hizo, y usted tendrá que atone para su pecado horrible. La
estructura Rosalinda Figueroa Castillo y nuevo abrigo fino, y hace una
gran donación a su causa.
Usted debe atone. Si no en esta vida, entonces cuando usted muere también, y satisfaga a su dios.
Con un corazón severo,
Hi!  Please contact deette.evans@dbr.com if you can help.  What this is is a transport request.  Wherever you see a "leg" of this trip that says "NEEDED", they need a driver to drive these dogs on that "leg".  The dogs are being rescued out of a high-kill shelter and taken to a new home. They definitely STILL NEED DRIVERS.  Thanks--
Animals bulldozed to death in Cancun--please write June 27, 2005 11:19 AM
 The photos detail the actions of Opresa Construction Company, the primary contractor for La Gran Plaza Cancun - a mall being developed ostensibly as further capitalization on the tourist trade in the area.
   Opresa made a bogus deal to acquire land being used as a private shelter for the street dogs of Cancun - promising the owner and operator of the shelter that they would construct a new facility for her on land in an area called the Bonfil Ejido. This shelter was being operated by Rosalinda Figueroa Castillo, a woman of average means, as her personal charitable effort - which she has done for the past eleven years with meager resources and little support. She rescued and housed 186 dogs from the streets of Cancun - providing them with food, care, and shelter, rescuing them from lives of neglect, disease, suffering and starvation. A few months ago, a team of concerned veterinarians and volunteers even conducted a sterilization clinic at her shelter, neutering a great number of the dogs there.
       Opresa did not complete the construction as promised. Instead, after stalling and delaying in the completion of the promised facility they willfully and deliberately initiated destruction of Rosalinda's shelter, and used heavy equipment to bury more than 33 dogs alive - sending scores of other injured and terrified animals scattering back onto the streets!
       Even worse, on 2/17/05 when Rosalinda and her son arrived to find that temporary structures she and her friends had reconstructed had again been razed, she was then assaulted by a mob of Opresa's workers - who beat her son and dislocated her shoulder, sending them both to the hospital. They then continued to kick and beat the remaining dogs - sending them fleeing from what remained of the shelter. A number of the fleeing dogs were struck by cars. Others had been raised at the shelter since they were puppies, and knew no other home. While several of the workers were briefly jailed for this assault, the outrage of this can never be fully rectified - and no amount of PR will ever redeem Opresa Construction Company for it's demonstrated cruelty, inhumanity and greed.
       The unspeakable cruelty of Opresa Construction Company's workers is shown in these very graphic photographs:
 The reason for this letter is to ask you for justice after the barbaric act that the Construction Company Opresa perpetrate against Rosalinda Figueroa Castillo’s animal shelter when 33 live dogs were bulldozed in Cancun.
Honorable Mr Alor Quezada, we believe in your honesty and we ask you for justice in this hideous case. Honorable
Francisco Antonio Alor Quezada
Presidente Municipal de Benito Juares Cancun, Quintana Roo
Administracion 2005- 2008
El motivo de esta carta es pedirle justicia en el caso de barbarie que llevo a cabo la empresa constructora Opresa en contra del refugio animal de la senora Rosalinda  Figueroa Castillo  donde 33 perros fueron sepultados despues que la maquinaria pesada de Opresa derrumbara el lugar con los animalitos adentro. La tragedia se inicio cuando la empresa constructora Opresa firmo un contrato falso tratando de adquirir el terreno donde el refugio animal se encontraba y prometiendole a la propietaria- operadora del refugio que Opresa contruiria un nuevo refugio en el area de Bonfil Ejido.
Opresa no cumplio la contruccion del nuevo refugio como habia prometio y despues de retrasos y abandono de la obra prosiguieron a la destruccion del refugio animal de la senora Figueroa usando maquinaria pesada para demolerlo, matando 33 perros de los 186 que tenian hogar aqui, muchos otros lograron escapar malheridos a las calles.
El dia 2/17/2005 cuando Rosalinda y su hijo llegaron al lugar encontraron todo el refugio animal derrumbado y seguidamente un grupo de trabajadores de Opresa golpearon a la senora Rosalinda y a su hijo enviandolos ambos al hospital. Luego, trabajadores de Opresa continuaron pateando y golpeando a los perros malheridos para que salieran de las ruinas del refugio, los cuales huyeron despavoridos y muchos fueron atropellados en su huida.  Despues de este desafortunado dia, trabajadores de Opresa fueron enviados a la carcel por corto tiempo pero este indigno y horrendo acto nunca podra ser remediado o borrado pues la vida de pobres inocentes ha manchado las manos de Opresa,en Cancun y las imagines de perritos destrozados ya han recorrido el planeta.
Senor Francisco Antonio Alor Quezada, nosotros confiamos en su honestidad y respetuosamente pedimos que los culpables trabajadores de Opresa sirvan largos periodos de carcel, se sometan a obligatorio tratamiento sicologico y concejeria al igual que la empresa Opresa se comprometa con la construccion de un buen refugio para animals desamparados en Cancun.
Sinceramente,
(forwarded)
Animal "Protection League”
 Here are the contact emails for the leaders of JCAPL, the Johnston County Animal "Protection" League. This group supports Sue Sternberg temperament testing, which they brought to the Johnston County shelter in Smithfield to decide which dogs die. It could be a poodle or a cocker spaniel, but if it is too "snippy" it is going to the gas chamber.  Dogs and cats are like people, sometimes you're just not having a good day. I imagine they are stressed out, being in such a horrible place, sensing death all around them.  Or maybe they just don't like to have a plastic hand forced in their face.  Do they deserve the death penalty for that?
According to the Smithfield Herald's recent article, the JCAPL is involved in making decisions at the county shelter!  This shelter sells animals to research (also in the news), and kills most animals in the GAS CHAMBER.
HORRIFIC EXPERIMENTS AND THE KILLING OF DOGS! July 18, 2005 11:48 AM
Dear Friends,
please read this message (take this action) and then forward it to your friends- it is very urgent and important!
Thank You!
message from Animal Friends:
Animal Friends Croatia invite to a protest against experiments and the killing of beagles on the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb and bring disturbing video footage and pictures to the public
HORRIFIC EXPERIMENTS AND THE KILLING OF DOGS!
In the evening hours of June 30th 2005, 43 beagles have arrived from the breeding facility for dogs used for animal experiments in Italy on the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb. According to reliable information we have received from an employee on the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb, the dogs will go through physical checkups by the end of this week, whilst cruel experiments, which will end up by deaths of all dogs after approximately 10 weeks, will start with the beginning of the next week!
I am writing this letter to express my concern for 43 Beagles that have arrived on the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb.
The reprehensible activities occurring in Zagreb , which are bordering on the criminal have come to my attention and I implore you to cease and desist such unnecessary and quite possibly illegal and definitively cruel experimentation
Cruel experiments consisting of purposefully fracturing the bones of healthy dogs after which they are brutally murdered with an extraordinarily painful intra cardiac of poison is inhumane and an indication of your societal mindset and barbaric stance on all sentient life.
In this 21 century there is no need for such cruelty to be inflicted upon defenseless animals. Presently, we are in the 21st century and software programs, machines and computers are doing the "dirty job" of medical and surgical experimentation.
Croatian Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has to improve its standards, to end these vicious and unnecessary experiments and to go with time and invest in high tech…
I personally urge you to stop exploiting these sentient creatures unmercifully, to stop torturing and murdering these innocent beings and to free them from their horrifying suffering.
Ladies and gentlemen, please do all you can to show to the world that your county is not barbarous and that it is ready to take a step forward into the 21st century.
I would hope to receive a courteous and positive response from the proper officials regarding this alarming situation
Sincerely,
Romanian situation critical b/c of flood--please write July 26, 2005 8:20 AM
(Copied with permission to crosspost) PLEASE CROSSPOST
Hi All:  It has come to my attention that as a result of the PETA situation in northeastern North Carolina, Northampton County, has resumed the use of its gas chamber. The gas chamber is a cinderblock cell, as you can see here: http://www.helpinganimals.com/f-ncphotos-northampton.asp. Before PETA got involved here last year, it is my understanding that animals were dying in this chamber as well as by gunshot injections of succinylcholine chloride, a paralytic that was freezing their bodies up and causing them to die by suffocation, which is neither humane nor legal. Succinylchonline chloride has been banned as illegal for years.  Animal suffer incredibly as they are suffocating, terrified, and unable to try to breathe.  A really horrible death.
I have found out recently that the offer was made to Northampton County to have a third party pay for euthanasia by injection to be performed by a local veterinarian. A willing veterinarian was located in Hertford County who would provide this service if animals were transported to a pound where he currently provides the same service. A recent Board of Health meeting in Northampton County yielded a vote about this issue, and the vote was apparently to use this vet's services as well as a second entity. But officials will not reveal who the second entity is. Apparently officials also plan to send the current ACO for updated training with Ralph Houser. Officials will not provide assurance that the gas chamber will no longer be used.
Northampton County pound numbers for 2001 through 2003 can be seen at http://www.epi.state.nc.us/epi/vet/. As you can see, about 100 percent of the animals in this pound are killed, so this change affects hundreds of animals annually.
I have sent a letter to county officials about the grassroots effort to stop killing animals inhumanely.  It would be good for officials in this county to hear from North Carolina animal advocates who have nothing to do with PETA or animal rights and who oppose gassing, especially in a chamber that looks not to be in compliance with state law. Obviously all communications should be brief and courteous to the extreme “ we won't affect change with hysterics or nastiness. I encourage you all to write to the Northampton County Commission and Board of Health about this, and to respectfully urge that the gas chamber be destroyed and the services of the willing veterinarian used (they will be free to the county). Thank you.
Dear Friends and Friends of Friends,
Please excuse me for bothering you with my message, I usually don’t do such things, but YOUR HELP IS DESPERATELY NEEDED:
The situation is critical for a no-kill dog shelter from Romania: due to the floods that recently stroke our country, the shelter lost the aid of his main sponsor and is facing the desperate situation of being closed. The fate of more than 200 dogs that are presently taken care at the shelter is uncertain. Please help if you can. Every little help is very important for the dogs!
You can find information about the shelter at:
http://www.doghope.org.uk
http://www.doghope.ro/
http://www.oopsy.org (the English version is under construction)
Please also read the following letter of my friend Raluca on this matter.
Thank you very, very much for your help!
Dear Friends,
This is a call for help for Daisy Hope (Romania), an appeal in a desperate case!
Some of you may have heard about the flooding in Romania, due to the torrential rains in the past weeks that have swept the country. Indeed, our country is under water, we are facing severe floods in the Western, Southern and especially Eastern part. It is the second wave of floods, after the first one in April, and, as they announced, we are expecting heavy rains to stat again today. The number of dead person reaches 28 today, thousands left homeless and naked, thousand animals taken by waters. Please find at the end of this appeal additional information about the flooding, source: United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Due to this situation the Daisy Hope shelter is facing also a crisis period: we will loose our main support!! The disaster of water destroyed the shelters’ only sure resource of money and support for 200 dogs: our sponsor had big damages: 2 factories destroyed by the waters (in Galati and in Targu Ocna), both closed and they do not know exactly when will be open again. A fire destroyed one of these factories last year, now waters take the new building and the new machineries. Due to all this we are sure that we will not receive any help from them anymore (we have never had a support from local authorities), and the 200 dogs living in our shelter are in a desperate situation, because we do not know how the future will look for them, we realize that without a real help, we cannot go on with the shelter!
You can find more information about us on www.doghope.ro, www.doghope.org.uk and  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
(continued) July 26, 2005 8:20 AM
1. Romania is facing severe floods in its western, southern and especially eastern region, considered to be the worst in the last 50 years. It is the second wave of floods this year, after the first one hit the country in April. Moreover, because of the deterioration of weather, new floods are expected over the next days in other parts of the country, and most of Romania's 41 counties have been placed under alert. The worst situation is encountered along the Siret River. Its water levels have risen twenty fold in last days.
2. During the last few days, floods have severely affected 6 counties: Alba, Bacau, Braila, Galati, Tulcea and Vrancea (the county with the largest number of localities affected - placed under alert). According to Government's estimates, in total, 581 localities were affected, 13,856 houses have been flooded, 1905 houses damaged, 368 houses destroyed, 16,561 outbuildings affected, 10,231 wells and about 1,100 bridges of various sizes damaged and over 12,166 persons evacuated. A total area of over 88,000 ha of agricultural land has been flooded, as well. Roads (hundreds of kilometres) and railroads are also flooded.
3. In eastern Romania roads are closed and railway traffic interrupted. Many areas have been left without electricity and gas.
National response
4. According to the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator, the national and local authorities have responded very well to the situation. The Government has earmarked 140.5 billion new lei (4.7 million USD) for disaster relief efforts and Prime Minister Calin Pepescu Tariceanu has asked for donations to the affected population. Food supplies from state reserves will be sent to flooded areas. The Government has asked for assistance and will inform the international community of the specific needs. In this regard President Basescu has requested the European Commission Delegation in Bucharest for an emergency allocation for repairing the damaged road and railway infrastructure.
UN response
5. The UN Country Team has been mobilized and is in constant contact with the Government. International Assistance
6. OCHA, UNDP through the UN Resident Coordinator's Office, IFRC, NATO and interested donors are in close contact on the situation and will revert with further information as it becomes available.
7. This Situation Report and information on ongoing emergencies is also available on the OCHA Internet Website at
Crack Down On Animal Fighters . . . August 01, 2005 5:49 PM
From: Carol Bischoff
To:  Carol Bischoff's Network
Subject:  FW Crack Down on Animal Fighters
Message: : Crack Down On Animal Fighters
SAMPLE LETTER
==============================
The Honorable Representative
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Representative
In a June 11, 2005 raid at the Del Rio Game Club in Cocke County, Tennessee, 100 agents representing the FBI, USDA, IRS, and state/local law enforcement busted one of the biggest cockfighting rings in the U.S. Authorities made 143 arrests, confiscated $40,000, and seized hundreds of fighting birds from the Del Rio pit, owned by Don and Donna Poteat of the United Gamefowl Breeders Association (UGBA).
Cockfighting is an offense in 48 states. The UGBA is a tax-exempt association that represents cockfighting interests nationwide. I am shocked the IRS grants tax-free status to an organization implicated in criminal practices. It is time for federal officials to squelch illegal animal bloodsports.
Please cosponsor the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act (H.R. 817), to upgrade penalties from misdemeanor to felony for the interstate and foreign trade in animals exploited for fighting. The Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act also prohibits interstate and foreign commerce of cockfighting weapons such as razor-sharp gaffs.
Fighting networks are linked to animal abuse, drug trafficking, prostitution, illegal gambling and firearms sales. Dogfighters routinely steal companion animals to augment their stock of bait dogs. Children, commonly employed as "runners" for the betting operation, are subjected and desensitized to these violent, unlawful activities.
For cockfights, weapons similar to ice picks are affixed to the legs of gamecocks. Often drugged with stimulants and steroids to intensify
aggression inside the arena, birds gouge eyes and sever wings. Handlers resuscitate collapsing roosters by blowing on their heads. When a bird begins to drown in his own blood due to perforated lungs, handlers may even suck blood from the bird's beak to prolong the contest.
In nature, roosters rarely engage in fatal combat. Fighting cocks are intentionally bred and trained to attack. Cockfighting is also associated  with the spread of avian diseases responsible for the extermination of millions of chickens--and millions of federal dollars for containment.
When authorities raid dogfighting camps, they find emaciated and disfigured dogs. Most of their ears are amputated with razors, a common "autograph" on fight dogs. American pit bull terriers, the most frequently used breed, are disciplined to rip each other to pieces during contests inside plywood-wall
pits before applauding spectators.
Veterinary care is not an option for animals covered in puncture wounds, lacerations and scars. Instead, handlers crudely tape or suture their prizefighters' injuries and may shoot or slash the throats of losers. More often, worn down fight dogs are abandoned. Left to fend for themselves on the streets, they either die or jeopardize communities.
Please cosponsor the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act (H.R. 817). I am counting on you to help enact this imperative legislation early in the 109th Congress.
Thank you,
Hundreds of Animals Dying While Groups Await Permission to Administer Urgently Needed Aid
Project Hope, a project of the international animal protection organization, In Defense of Animals (IDA), is calling on state officials to allow animal protection groups permission to enter disaster stricken areas of Mississippi. The group, which has set up a rescue and recovery effort at the County Fairgrounds in Jackson along with Mississippi Emergency Response for Animals (MEPA) and the Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) to help animals affected by Hurricane Katrina, is prepared to venture into areas affected by the storm and deliver medical assistance and supplies, yet is being halted by the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
"We understand we could be facing dangerous situations and that precautions need to be taken. We appreciate measures being taken to ensure our safety," says Project Hope Director, Doll Stanley. "But we are sitting here in a parking lot with a truckload of supplies waiting for permission to utilize our resources while animals are dying for lack of food and water."
The Project Hope team secured a generous donation of supplies for the rescue operation from PETsMART charities including food, carriers and crates to house animals at the rescue center, as well as to transport animals to shelters and foster homes. While the group awaits permission to use the highway to help animals in need, news media outlets are reporting distraught evacuees being forced to leave their beloved animal companions behind and some even having animals euthanized for fear of their welfare once turned over to authorities.
Please contact the following state officials and politely urge them to allow IDA and other animal protection organizations into stricken areas and administer their much-needed assistance. Be sure to thank them for taking necessary precautions, but let them know that it is time to allow rescue workers who are willing to risk their safety do what they came to do.
Behind the Scenes of the 2005 European Basketball Championship
Prior to the current Serbian administration, Serbian politicians promised to improve  animal welfare laws yet the horrendous conditions for all animals still exists in Serbia. Today these same politicians ignore the pleas and cries from their own citizens and individuals abroad including Brigitte Bardot to stop the torture and murder of animals The following photographs depict how the current Serbian administration is administering animal control. These animal control methods were employed at an accelerated rate prior to the European Basketball Championship.
Serbian streets continue to be inundated with companion animals (dogs and cats). Animal control in Serbia consists of; paying hunters for each animal killed (hunters present the animal's tail for payment), poison such as T-61 and Kreozan which kills by suffocation, drenching the animal with gasoline and burning them to death and other barbaric methods such as beating, stoning and hanging.
These brutal killings have accelerated in the capital city of Belgrade, this past year in what seems to be a state sponsored massacre. The government's objective appears to be to present the city as an attractive destination for tourists visiting sporting events such as the "Belgrade Marathon" and the "European Basketball Championship". Even dogs that are sterilized (spayed / neutered) by reputable organizations such as "Foundation Brigitte Bardot" and fed by animal loving Serbian citizens have disappeared. According to these citizens, what is even more astonishing is the lack of coverage by the Serbian media of this slaughter. Serbian media continues to portray friendly dogs as rabid, vicious killers to their audience which makes one wonder, have things really changed since the media controlled Milosevic regime?
http://www.europeaninitiative17.bravehost.com/Campaign2005.html
EUROPEAN INITIATIVE 17 (A Serbian Animal Rights / Welfare and Rescue Organization) with the international support of forty-seven organizations who all strongly condemn the inhumane killing of stray dogs and cats on the street of Belgrade and in Serbia in preparation for the  2005 "European Basketball Championship" or at anytime.
Letter:
Dear Sponsors and Participants;
Historically, Serbia 's war ended ten years ago. However evidence shows that a war continues; only this time it is a war against Companion Animals (Dogs and Cats). Thousands of animals have been inhumanely rounded up, tortured, hanged, shot, beaten with sticks and rocks, burned and poisoned in order to make Belgrade's streets pristine for your 2005 European Basketball championship, causing this sporting event to be smeared with blood. Serbian officials have ignored the cries and pleas of individuals in Serbia and worldwide to halt these atrocities and implement better animal welfare laws and policies. Since this savage massacre was caused by the preparations for your sporting event, I would ask you and the sponsors of the 2005 FIBA Eurochampionships to denounce these atrocities publicly. I would also ask that you urge the Serbian government to cease the brutal round up of animals, legislate and enforce better animal welfare laws and implement a sterilization (spay / neuter) program for all companion animals living on the streets throughout Serbia. We appreciate your help in this cause.
         Serbian Dogs Need Your Help
Eleanor has received 134 new, 989 total stars from Care2 membersEleanor has been awarded 634 butterflies for taking action at Care2 Eleanor B.    Encourage Officials to Stop the Killing
Serbian pups, barely six weeks old, await their fate
During the war in Bosnia in the 1990s, companion animals were not allowed into human shelters, leaving some 20,000 dogs abandoned on the streets. Serbian officials are now struggling with a surging overpopulation of stray dogs they must contain in preparation for the thousands of visitors expected for the European Basketball Championships to be held in Belgrade in September. Because there are few animal protection laws on the books, and those that do exist are routinely ignored, many in Serbia have resorted to brutally slaughtering dogs on the streets, with the "quiet blessing" of some government officials.
As reports from concerned citizens and tourists filter out to the international community, attention is increasingly being drawn to this problem. Witnesses nationwide report the brutal massacre of dogs -- stray and owned. Reprehensible killing methods such as mass poisonings, hangings and brutal beatings occur on a daily basis. In the city of Zlatibor, the mayor even issues hunting permits that allow people to shoot dogs on sight -- often right in front of vacationing tourists and children.
Without question, Serbia faces a very real challenge. Sadly, the current solutions are not, by any stretch of the imagination, humane. Fortunately, there are a few organizations working in Serbia to end this. Welfare for Animals Global, Inc. (WAG NY), a political advocacy and lobby group based in New York City, is working to pressure Serbian authorities to initiate humane reforms in a country devoid of any semblance of animal welfare whatsoever. After a formal meeting with the Serbian Ambassador to the United States in June of this year, WAG was issued a formal invitation to visit Serbia and sit down for discussions with Serbian government officials.
Things are on the right track, but in order for positive change to occur and to resolve the issue of substandard animal welfare, the Serbian government must become proactive; especially as the world's spotlight turns upon Belgrade for the European Basketball Tournament. This is where we come in!
Send an email to the following Serbian officials and urge and encourage them to develop and implement a humane method of animal control. A sample letter follows.
Dear Sir:
The brutal treatment of companion animals in Serbia is fast coming to the attention of the world. We are horrified to learn , via graphic photographic evidence, about the lack of compassion and indiscriminate cruelty regarding the treatment of Serbian animals.
We respectfully and urgently request that you take action and put a stop to the brutal, vicious killing of domesticated street animals by government officials, civil workers and ordinary citizens. Please work with international animal welfare organizations, such as Welfare for Animals Global, Inc.,the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, and other international organizations who are adept at planning and implementing humane welfare programs.
Target: 100,000
Current situation:
Animal lovers all over Malaysia petition for a pro-active government stance on the prevention of cruelty to animals by passing effective and deterrant legislation:
1.Increasing the cruelty fine from RM200 (since 1953) significantly higher to around RM 10,000.00 and increase jail time.
2. A life time ban on animal ownership for those charged with cruelty to animals --- animals therefore cannot be returned to the owners.
3. To urge the public to be responsible pet owners - spay/neuter their pets, adequate food, space, exercise, love and mediacal attention and to be considerate neighbours.
(Currency conversion note: RM$1=USD$0.2654; USD$1= RM$3.7685)
DETAILS (from site):
Petition to Prime Minister ~ Phase II
Dear Animal Lovers and Advocates,
As you may be aware, the SPCA started a petition to the prime minster to raise the cruelty fine from RM200 to a significantly higher fine of around RM10,000.00. The petition, which included the signatures of supporters, was supposed to be handed to the prime minister in October 2004. However, this has not happened, as we only managed to raise 20,000 signatures. Due to the insufficient number of signatures collected during the first phase of this petition, the SPCA is entering a second phase in hope to collect at least 100,000 signatures locally and internationally.
Therefore, we are now entering a phase II stage of the petition whereby we would like you to join our effort for this cause. Please download the petition forms. Kindly photocopy it and distribute it for signatures to be collected. The more names we have, the better.
Please ensure that those who have already signed the form during the first phase of the petition do not sign the petition again.
All forms should be signed, signatures counted and returned to the SPCA by September 2006.
We need your every support as we try our best to stop these cruel acts and t punish those who do injustice to these helpless animals. Let us work together to bring justice to these voiceless animals.
On behalf of the animals, thank you very much for your support.
SPCA Calls for Harsher Penalties for Animal Abuse
Following the recent two cases brought to Court by Jabatan Haiwan Enforcement Officers ( DVS ), SPCA is appealing to the Courts and the Law makers and decision makers to take into account the seriousness of these cases and the inadequate penalties at present are being issued.
The first case, a Breeder in Cheras was fined RM200 for cruelty to 13 dogs, the charge was expected to be for each individual dog (i.e. 13 X RM200) and the lack of a ban of keeping animals after prosecution for cruelty means that each dog was returned to the owner to continue a life of suffering and production.
The second case, a Daschund named Tim, was chained so tightly round his neck that the chain had become embedded into the skin and a six inch wound exposed a bloody mess around his neck. The owner in this case was fined RM200 and had to spend one day in jail. The dog is to be returned to the owner. Tim is still recovering from his injury and several operations to remove the chain from his neck.
According to the Law in Malaysia the maximum fine for cruelty to animals is RM200 and/or 6 months imprisonment. SPCA is appealing both cases at present and will aim to have the 13 dogs and Tim surrendered to SPCA’s animal home in Ampang Jaya.
SPCA is appealing that the Animal Ordinance 1953 is amended to first of all increase the fine to a realistic fee (after all a pedigree puppy costs about RM1000 – 2000 today) and imposes a BAN on KEEPING ANIMALS following prosecution for CRUELTY.
Add your name and voice to a petition appealing for amendments to the law protecting animals in Malaysia which will be handed over to the authorities at World Animal Day in October.
Message:
This was cross posted from www.bestfriends.org.
20060. KATRINA DOGS WILL DIE SOON by Troubled, 10/5/05 19:29 ET I was
part of a rescue expedition from Portland, Oregon (including a
veterinarian,) that spent the past week (Sept. 24th through Oct. 2nd)
on the streets of New Orleans, breaking into homes for 12-14 hours per
day to try to save any animals still alive and trapped in their homes
without food or water. It was a difficult job. We were in extreme heat,
without much sleep or food. We saw hundreds of trapped, dead animals.
Still, hundreds of us stuck it out, because we knew how many had
already died and we wanted to try to save the remaining live animals.
When all was said and done, our group brought five of the rescued dogs
back to Portland with us. The dogs are positive for heartworm. This is
a fatal parasite infestation, carried by mosquitos and rampant in the
southern region of the country. It is usually treatable (if caught in
time) but treatment is not cheap, nor is prevention. These infected
dogs have been shipped all over the country, and are being happily
reunited with their owners from Louisiana and Mississippi, who can
scarcely piece their own lives together, let alone afford to test or
treat their dogs for heartworm. The prognosis is only months.
Approximately 9 out of 10 dogs are positive. These dogs come from an
impoverished community that cannot afford preventative care for their
dogs. We are told they are educated about this epidemic problem and the
outcome, but either can't afford prevention or don't bother.
IMPORTANT NOTE: While in New Orleans, I noticed none of the thousands
of dogs we saw had been spayed or neutered, and all were very young. I
hadn't put it together in my head until just recently. Almost all dogs
in Louisiana die before they reach age two. They wander the streets,
have a few litters, then die from heartworm (a very unpleasant way to
die.) The only reason there is a population of dogs left in Louisiana
must be that they have a few litters before they die.
This is A MUCH BIGGER STORY than the reuniting of the owners and dogs
rescued from the Hurricanes and subsequent flooding. The dogs are GOING
TO DIE! They were saved by people who love animals enough to fly to the
South, risking life and limb to help them, and will now die in a matter
of months if returned to their owners. The reunions are scarce, and the
remaining dogs who are in shelters around the country need to be tested
and treated. All of this information and statistics can be
substantiated by vets in Louisiana and around the country.
SIDE NOTE: When we left New Orleans, the rescue operation was being
called off. The city is still full of dogs and cats running scared and
hungry down the streets. Law enforcement agencies told us they have
been given authorization to SHOOT ANY STRAYS LEFT IN THE STREETS.
(Another big story opportunity.) The quick sum up is that dogs are
loose because the National Guard told people they couldn't bring their
pets when they evacuated, then broke into homes looking for people, and
let the dogs out.
China Pet Dog Cull
Unlicensed owners in terror of having dogs confiscated and brutally killed
Much to our horror, Animals Asia has recently received hysterical letters from distraught Chinese pet lovers across China who are terrified by some Government departments' new clampdown on unregistered pet dogs. Dogs are being brutally confiscated, in some cases beaten to death in front of their owners, or taken to Government pounds and killed in horrendous ways.
In Guangzhou in particular (a major Chinese city just north of Hong Kong), the licence fee to register pet dogs is an exhorbitant RMB10,000 (US$1,235) for the first year and RMB6,000 (US$741) per year thereafter. Naturally, the fee is beyond the reach of most pet owners and they are living in terror of having their dog confiscated and killed in a brutal fashion.
Outrageously, some Government officials are enticing people to report on their neighbours who have unregistered pet dogs, by offering to pay them 10% of the fine. Dog killing teams are patrolling the cities looking for unregistered dogs and we have heard that there is an official "Dog Extinction Movement".
In stark contrast to this, on Sunday 25th September 2005, Animals Asia publicly launched our Pet Education Initiative in cooperation with ParknShop in Guangzhou. The initiative promotes responsible pet ownership, whilst introducing the concept of dogs as therapists through our "Dr. Dog" programme - which inspires people to view dogs as our friends and helpers in need of our love and respect, whilst emphasising that they should never be considered as food.
Please write a letter to the Chinese authorities in Guangzhou (capital of Guangdung Province) expressing your outrage at this brutal dog eradication campaign. As always personal letters are the most effective, however you can email the sample letter below (feel free to add your own comments) to the following email address:
Sample Letter to Chinese Authorities protesting Pet Dog Cull
Dear Sir / Madam,
We are shocked and outraged to learn that the Guangzhou authorities are currently confiscating and killing unregistered pet dogs. We would like to request that you urgently address this matter by significantly reducing the registration fees for dogs, whilst working in conjunction with animal groups, like the Animals Asia Foundation, to educate the public about responsible pet ownership.
The existing registration fee of RMB 10,000 per dog and subsequent annual renewal fee of RMB 6000, is quite simply beyond the means of most citizens in Guangzhou, resulting in citizens keeping their beloved dogs illegally, and often too frightened to seek outside help to vaccinate or de-sex them.
Scientific studies throughout the world have shown that keeping companion animals gives incredible mental and physical health benefits. Pet owners are proven to live longer and are more happy, balanced people than non-pet owners.
With just over 150 million pet dogs throughout China, pet ownership is booming and it is vital that you recognise pets play an increasingly crucial role in today's society. It is simply not possible for Guangzhou to achieve the status of a modern city with such a barbaric and unrealistic attitude towards animals. There are already numerous humane solutions to ensure that dogs and people can co-exist peacefully and safely in the modern world and thus there is simply no excuse for the current brutal measures being taken against dogs and their devastated owners.
We implore you to immediately cease these cruel measures and introduce public education initiatives to ensure that dogs are treated with the respect that they deserve, so that China is in line with international standards.
