Actually, the laws differ from state to state. Check with your local school district (which you may have to notify anyway) as to your intentions. The state may have strict guidelines with which you may have to adhere.

There is so much more out there than when we started in 1987. Do a "google" search & look for the home school links & try to find your state laws. According to individual beliefs, you may wish to tailor your home school to your children's needs.

Personally we used Bob Jones & ABEKA for the first 4 years, then changed to Living Heritage Academy in Lewisville TX [PACE] where my oldest took part in the graduation exercize with about 80 other home schoolers across the US & missionary kids around the world. It was a definite unique experience for me/us & both [sets of] grandparents made the trip ~ plus a cousin in TX who just happened to be in the area that weekend.

Hi March 22, 2006 9:47 AM

I just started home schooling my daughter this year instead of letting her fail her way through seventh grade too.

I found a great resource at my local library before I started it's a book called the complete guide to homeschooling by John and Kathy Perry. It had all the local laws for each state like what the required subjects were and whether the state required yearly testing and much more. Sorry don't mean for it to sound like an ad but it was a great book that really helped us through our first home school year.

With this past years experience teaching my daughter I've decided that I'm going to pull my son next year to home school him also.

I hope you all have a great day.

New to homeschooling February 13, 2007 6:46 AM

Hello I am new to homeschooling I started teaching my daughter after Christmas Break this year. I was so tired of hearing the teacher tell me she was not doing her work when we would do the work at home the night before. After starting homeschooling I figured out the problem she was bored! We are currently well ahead of the children that were in her old classroom and enjoying each day of school!!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi Bobbie, I am home schooling my eight year old and have been from the start. We are just starting the new year. It is fun though we are being slow in getting into the more academic work. It is great to hear that you are doing so well with it. It is easy for a child to be bored in a classroom - too many to cater for and get it right for all. How are you approaching it? Are you following your old schools curriculum or what? I glean the best from everything I come across (well, what I think is the best) and we work through that. I guess with having been at school socializing isn't too big an issue as she will have friends from school. We have a fairly good network where we live. We meet every Wednesday for a social outing, which is great for the kids. It is also a chance to get support and ideas for the parents. I tend to keep fairly quiet about how we are doing things amongst the group though as many of them are very keen on unschooling and not that tolerant of my more academic style. But it is still fun and great for the children to run riot with each other Peace, Fi  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

hello Bobbie & Fiona February 17, 2007 4:04 PM

Helllo, Bobbie H. & Fiona M.. Glad to see you here. Our son[s] graduated 10 years ago... a year ahead of their peers... & started college 1.5 years ahead while still in high school. We followed the Living Heritage Academy [PACE]  curriculum. I'm sure a lot has changed in those 10 years, but I wouldn't change a thing... except more UN-schooling. I am more committed to home schooling than ever now.

I came across a link the other day about school violence...
http://www.columbine-angels.com/Shootings-1980-2000.htm
... after watching a movie about Laurie Dann, the mentally ill woman who went into a school in IL & killed a 2nd grade student Friday, May 20, 1988. Suprisingly, the more current infamous school shootings were at the bottom of a long page.

Also, I was just thinking about all those little robots (in grade school thru college) the teachers & schools are trying to produce. And, we wonder why there's so little creativity encouraged.

Good luck with your endeavor & my prayers are with you. I don't get to my groups very often, but you are welcome to email me any questions you might have privately or post them publically. Enjoy the group & enjoy your hs experience. The main thing is to keep your eye on the goal & never waiver from that goal. And by all means, keep in touch with your home school support group. They will be invaluable in the years to come & you will be glad they are there.

<<I'm sure a lot has changed in those 10 years, but I wouldn't change a thing... except more UN-schooling.>>

I can identify with that quote!  I have 4 home school graduates- now a writer, a music composer, a web site designer, and a computer programmer.  I have just one still home schooling, my youngest.

As I go over my life again and again (as a writer) analyzing our successes and failures, I feel more strongly every day about responsible unschooling.  I don't mean where we only do what we feel like, but where what I teach is more about real life and less about academics.

I have 5 published writers in my 5 kids.  But they've never used all the labels of the parts of speech and words like antecedents and grammar analysis.  To be a writer you just have to have something valuable to say that is worthwhile to other people, not just yourself.  Kids can get this without all the grammar analysis and so on.

My youngest, whom I am very proud of, is learning more practical stuff than I could ever dream of about home steading, living off the land, being self sufficient, and at the same time, is extremely adept at the computer, internet, gaining any information he could want in seconds, and is into HTML and web site design for customers (at age 15).

I think his education is the best of all my kids, even though the rest had more academics.  When my 15 year old takes part in discussions on adult home steading and environmental e-groups, they guess that he is about 40 years old.  And when he writes to our CA congress people they write back to him like they think he is middle aged.

I used to think that unschooling was an insufficient form of education, but now I am not only loving it (and my son is REALLY loving it) but I also am seeing that unschooling done right (ie with a clear purpose) can be a fantastic preparation for real life.
