Thanks Val. All done. Particular thanks for serving Canada up for me:
1. A major problem in respect to wildlife protection is the tendency to "modify" and control populations to suit human needs. This throws into question the purpose of "Environment Canada", if it's objectives are other than from the point of view of wildlife with whom we share this Planet.
2.When will this endless splattering of the Canadian Flag with the blood of innocent seal pups cease.
Surely with all the resources available to the government alternative sources of income can be provided to those who are the current slaughterers.
Canada is rapidly falling to the level of developing nation status in regard to animal welfare.
What is it that prevents enactment of modern, humane legislation in regard to animals?

Yes Debbie. I thought that I had a very good sense of humour. Apparently I don't.
It is true that animal abuse often leads to human abuse , but personally the animal abuse is very significantly worse . Humans will always show concern for humans and humans have options and remedies. I look for a world where people are motivated to care for animals for their own sake rather than that abuse may ultimately affect a human. I may as well wish that the Sun was green.
Perhaps the linkage is the only argument that will motivate some people people to act. I've used it often, but feel disgusted that this is necessary. It is a further reminder of how self absorbed our species is. I am sure that you share this view point, something that further isolates me from most people.
Yes, Simon...It is exceedingly frustrating that far too many people can only be motivated to respect and protect animals in relation to how it can help them, rather than simply considering the animals' welfare...Frustrating to feel that those of us who do consider the animals' welfare seem to live on the fringes of society...Is it really so difficult to comprehend the validity and importance of the lives of those who haven't the voice to speak for themselves....?
I really don't get it...
Didn't realize was a parody - I just thought "How could this be possible???" But don't put anything up as impossible - thanks.

Knut's death at such a young age is a tragedy but far from surprising, considering how much exploitation the poor animal had to endure while in captivity. Polar bears do not do well at all in captivity...Very easily bored, depressed, and stressed. Of course, when I was a child, I was blissfully ignorant of such things, as most children...and sadly, many adults...still are....but it's as Albert Schweitzer said...Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight.

On Vick and art

So please tell what is Vick to do with , unless gross cruelty is now "art".

And Debbie , you are so right about Annie and the elephant issue. Before television, movies and the internet, the circus coming to town was a huge event.
Now is a tawdry, fly blown trailer trash activity. My comment to the House;
This behaviour has two elements:
1. His unsuitability for the work that he was employed to do.
2. An act of cruelty against an animal.
So what is happening about No.2 ? The laws exist and there are police and courts of justice. The World awaits.

India's tiger population has increased for the first time in decades, a newspaper said yesterday, citing a national tiger census report slated to be released next week.
The number of tigers in India has risen for the first time in a decade, according to a new official census.

You are so polite Debbie. You were probably going suggest that the criminals involved in bestiality undergo a lobotomy (always assuming that they have a brain to lobotomize).
Live Key rings. What is it about humans that they need to imprison animals. Since a child I have never understood why anyone would cage the symbol of freedom, the bird.
Why put the "bird of the sea, fish" in a tiny bowl. Perhaps it makes people think that they have some control over nature. To be God and rule over others. They must feel very empty inside to need such reassurance. Perhaps it comes from the fact that the majority of people are totally alienated from Nature.
The very disturbing fact for me (and another reason why I am an outsider) is that it is quite normal and acceptable. That is what has happened in our societies. Cruelty is acceptable and normal.

A lobotomy...Yes...I can't get my own mind around what goes on in the minds of those who think nothing of treating an animal with unspeakable cruelty, apathy and indifference, nor why the punishment is still far too frequently so ridiculously lenient. When will people ever realize the connection between abusing an animal and a human and begin to treat both offenses with equal urgency?
That said, being an outsider isn't such a bad thing....

Look at the photograph. The maximum sentence is totally inadequate but should be sought, otherwise what is the point of the law."

End this ridiculously wasteful "sport" that has caused the decimation of an amazing species and a valuable predator that is so very crucial to the ocean's ecosystem.

A couple of my petition comments:
On using animals for entertainment. "When will humans evolve enough to see that exploiting magnificent animals for entertainment is just plain wrong.
Theses animals are masterpieces of creation. They have integrity and natural beauty, characteristics that are totally lacking in those who exploit them. Those who exploit them merely show the extent to which they are retarded in moral development.
There is absolutely no justification for this cruelty. Clearly the motivation is to make money. Someone , somewhere has to create and enforce legislation to control those who are morally bankrupt and obsessed with greed, regardless of the harm created."

McDonalds- "McDonalds in the undisputed champion of marketing.
Happy, family orientated, and fun.
But the hypocrisy is enormous. How can your board members hide behind this facade of wholesomeness whilst being aware that is selling gross cruelty. There is a serious disconnect here. How do you "switch off".
Does McDonalds have any moral principles or is it totally fixated on profit at all cost ?"
and disposable pets:
"When a person take "ownership " of a pet they also assume responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal for the whole of it's natural life. It is not a casual purchase like a lounge chair or a car that can be ditched if it no longer suits.
If a person (the carer) has a disabled dependent , and that person dies, or is incapacitated, then the dependent is not disposed of.

Good word "purpose" Debbie.
Humans seem to have a fixation on finding out "why" and "how", both irrelevant questions in my wholistic view of nature. Humans are so obsessed with gazing at the cogs in the clock that they fail to see the clock itself.
Once we start asking what is the purpose of a turtle's life, then we have to ask what is the purpose of a human life. To make money, find distraction and amusement, self-satisfaction. Is that a purpose. Personally I'll side with the turtles. They live in harmony and don't ask how and why.
Thanks again Val for these gleanings.
Just a couple of my comment:
When the rest of the world, including parts of Spain, are moving away from the barbarism of the past, it is pleasing to note a move to abandon the barbarism of the past, in favour of a more civilized banning of this blood lust activity.
Ecuador, has much to proud of, but should be ashamed of allowing bullfighting.
Justification that it is part of culture is a weak argument. We are an evolving species. Just because something was done in the past is no justification for doing it now. If this were not so the some countries would still be practicing cannibalism.
What a repayment for all they have gone through. Humans work through their lives and then retire. Turtles are unwilling used and then killed. Can you not see the cruel irony in this ? A zoology department should , of all groups, understand the value of life. There is a real disconnect here. Let the turtles live their lives in peace.
Great comments - thanks for sharing.

They live in harmony and don't ask how and why.
Exactly, Simon. That's what I love about animals. They just do what they have to do to get by.They don't have all these complicated thoughts and emotions. They just are what they are and let others be whatever they are.
As for bullfighting, just because it's a "tradition" doesn't make it right. I've heard the same argument raised for cockfighting..."It's part of the culture." Well, that particular aspect of whatever "culture" has been banned...and I'm glad to see that bullfighting appears to be headed in the same direction. Such pointless brutality and "blood sport" has no place in a (supposedly) civilized, enlightened society.
