Thanks Lynn and Nyack! Here's my "domestic cat" -- Ginger!
OH MY! She is a beauty! If it is a she? What a perfect name! I have mostly known orange kitties to be male
Declawing is so very cruel and inhumane! I noted Cher's news and signed the Ban Declawing in the U.S. petition earlier today.
Thanks Nyack. Yes, Ginger's a female. She's the third orange cat I've had. One was a male. But Ginger is actually the second orange female I've had.
Interesting! The very first cat I had as a toddler (before I could even walk) was an orange one- Cocomo was his name- he followed me everwhere and was as protective as a dog! I can still recall him as if it were yestereday
Congatulations Betty! That was a good one!! Petition already signed!!These are my Calico gals Sashamouse and Savage!!
I didn't know most Ginger meows were male. I know almost all Calicos are female. Odd!! I gave Savage her name as it means feral or wild. Which she is a little hellion. She's on a mission to break everything I own!! She was found abandoned in a wood pile as a tiny baby.

Orange females are rare. The simple answer is that an orange female cat must have BOTH an orange father and either an orange or calico mother. Where as an orange male only needs ONE parent to be orange or calico.
To understand why, you'll need a small lesson in genetics:
The gene that determines orangeness is carried on the X chromosome. (females have two X chromosomes, X X, and males have an X and a Y, X Y)
For our purposes, we will represent an orange gene carrying chromosome as "X^C" and a non-orange chromosome simply as "X"
A male orange cat must have an orange X, so his chromosome pair is "X^C Y" (as opposed to a non-orange male "X Y")
In order for a female cat to be orange, she must have two X^C chromosomes. "X^C X^C"
Now, offspring get their chromosomes from their mother and father. A female gets an X from mom and an X from dad. A male must get an X from mom, and a Y from dad.
So the female cat, in order to be orange, must have an orange (X^C Y) father and a mother that at least carries one X^C chromosome.
A female cat with one orange chromosome (X^C X) only partially shows or expresses her orange gene and is a calico cat.
What beautiful cats you all have!
Signed the petition gladly, Nyack!
Sad to say, my last cat Minky went over the Rainbow Bridge in 2003. He was a gorgeous cat with green and gold eyes, long hair that looked black at first glance but was white when you pushed his hair back. I still miss him, although Mandy, my doggie, has somewhat replaced him. He's his picture.
Thanks for the explaination, Nyack!! Oooo, Beth's meow is beautiful!! I love Lynn's too, he's gorgeous!! Looks soooo soft!! Thanks for sharing!!Forgot to say sorry for your loss, Lynn, I wish they all had way longer lives!!
