EU Fisheries Reform: A Historic Vote for the Planet’s Future
** Citizens send over 180 000 direct messages calling on MEPs to end overfishing and save stocks **
The global campaigning organisation Avaaz called today’s European Parliament (EP) vote on EU fishing policy a “historic victory for the planet’s future”. The EP voted to reform the common fisheries policy to help save Europe’s endangered fish stocks, 68% of which are estimated to be overfished.
This vote follows enormous public pressure with over 180 000 citizens sending messages to MEPs via the Avaaz website in the last 36 hours, calling on them to vote to reform the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) - combined with the efforts of other campaign groups such as Greenpeace, Pew Environment Group and Ocean 2012.
Alex Wilks, Campaign Director for Avaaz:
"Finally, after 40 years of hoovering up all the fish they could, from Africa to the Pacific, MEPs have finally taken a stand to save our seas. This is a huge victory for the citizens of Europe who urged MEPs to stand up to the fishing lobbies and call a halt to the overfishing madness.”
This is the first time the EP has co-decision powers over fisheries policy. A group of MEPs backed by powerful national fishing interests -- led by France and Spain -- tried to rally a coalition against the reform of Europe’s fisheries. But rather than caving in, many MEPs chose to support the historic proposal made by the European Fisheries Committee to end overfishing.
The MEPs voted 502 to 137 in favour of the reform. The European Parliament will now start negotiations with the Council and the Commission on the reform plans. The proposal could become law by next year, pending further discussions with the EU Member States governments.
