Welcome and Introductions December 16, 2004 5:31 PM
Hello everyone! I created this group to help people learn to create their very own websites!
My plan is that we will learn some basic html code and then I will help you create your very own website As we learn you will actually create a website!!!
So post your intro here Do you know any html/website stuff? Do you have a website already? if so the link? What kindof site are you interested in creating?
You can create a website about anything. Maybe just a personal site- about you, your family, pets etc... maybe to show off your art work, or writing, etc... the possibilities are endless.
Also you could create one for your group or your orginization.
It is my personal site, with info about me and also information on my spiritual path and my writings.
It actually is using a layout someone else created, which is an excellent source for those who are still learning to have a great site! I actually could do it myself lol but I came across this layout and graphics on accident and fell in love with it and had to use it. But I could do that same exact layout all by myself which is important to me
I will show you how to create layouts yourself as well as find some really good ones to use!
Below is a page of my site dedicated just to my Groups.
Hello. My name is Emily. I would love to get a website (or a better one) I have www.savingapesfromentertainment.bravehost.com And I have no clue as to how I was able to do that. I don't talk in computer, english is my only language. I took french for two years but know nothing, and now im rambling. But anywho, I need a website to get my project about apes in entertainment going.
Thanks for all your help
Emily

I haven't done much with it in a long time. RED and her hubby helped me set it up. I need to learn to do this myself. I would like to maybe do a blog page or something. I'm not sure yet.
I want to take this alittle slow so that everyone can learn. So those who already have websites may be bored for a while lol. But I will label each thread carefully so you will know when to check in, if the begining stuff is too easy for you *hugs*
Hi, I'm kayla. I know a TINY bit about html from a journal website i use to belong to where I made layouts for people. Thanks for starting this group! I can already see that it's going to be a GREAT source of info!

Hello from Sara, another newbie. I’m not totally new to html and have a site of sorts, but it could use a lot of improvements. After seeing the other “newbie” sites here I almost hate to give a link, but if anyone wants to check it out you’ll find it at: http://saragraz.topcities.com/evrn/pg1.html
Now I must go read, read, read as the rest of you will be way by me already!
hello ...yes i am new to this concept....have wanted to make a web site for a long time but didin't know where to start...I appreciate you efforts in trying to help us....thanks

I think things have slowed down here because of the busy season. But there is probably enough info in the first few lessons to get a site started to play with. You can also practice right from note pad by using your browser to open your page on your desktop. No need to upload just to practice the HTML.
That's almost the end of my limited knowledge. I'm looking forward to seeing the future lessons.
I need lots of help with everything..lol i have a site started already, but someone else did it for me.Its nowhere near being done, but she doesn't have the time to finish it and i'd rather learn how to do it myself anyways.I can't wait to learn how to do this, thanks for starting this group!!
Raven, thank you so much for your help in teaching us how to make websites! I've always wanted to learn, (in fact, it's become my new obsession!) and thanks to your help, I did the codes myself, no page-builder, or whatever it is called, for me! LOL You all have cool sites and I wanted to show you all what I've done so far: http://www.geocities.com/aislinn4509

Hello everyone & welcome Such great websites everyone has!
I so know what you mean Aislinn it does get addictive lol. Right now I have been spending all my time changing my layout on my site. It took forever I swear lol but its really looking great, ofcourse right now I had to take it down as it wasn't working right ;( ugh lol
Well I just go my website working and got it up Its a completely different layout so check it out if you are interested. I still need to tweak it here and there but for the most part its all good
Hey, I just found this group. I like learning stuff, looks like some good information. Here's the site I did with the freewebs site builder http://www.freewebs.com/stonethegardener/ here's the site I did with html http://stonethegardener.hipplanet.com/ I started with their page and changed colours and stuff. I add new stuff as I figure out how, and get fresh pictures.
What a beautiful site Stone! If this is what you do with six months computer experience, I can't wait to see what the rest of the year will bring!

Just wanted to let you all know I have completely redone my site and wanted to share the link so you check it out if you want to: http://www.geocities.com/darkreignwitch
I just found the door open as I was looking for a place to learn how to create a site.
There is a lot of information and talent here!
First question, before I read all the older topics ... how do you choose a webhosting (is that the correct term?) site? I want something that allows me pages for personal, Care2, FMS and Co-Cure info, animal rescue (I rescue cate) and links to friends and family sites. Also, are blogs safe? I am looking for a way to journal online for my friends when I am in relapse as I am now so that I am homebound and cannot visit and interact in the real world.
Feel free to ask any other questions you have on it.
I want something that allows me pages for personal, Care2, FMS and Co-Cure info, animal rescue (I rescue cate) and links to friends and family sites
Well you can do all of that on just about every host. As long as your content isn't adult, or illegal you basically can have any content you want on your pages.
Some free hosts may not let you use other payed advertisements other then their own though.
But basically what you are looking for would be great anywhere.
There are alot of great onlibe blogs(journal) sites already. If you get a paid host with php you could make your own. But there are free ones like http://www.livejournal.com/ and I use this one:
I was really surprised to see this community turn up in the search
results, didn't know that Care2 might have a community for
webdesign/websites. But I guess, it's all good!
Anyways, I have been making websites for almost six years, I taught
myself HTML and designing on Photoshop. My website's at
http://girlunfettered.com
It's just a simple personal site, with a journal containing my musings as the main focus.
Raven, thanks for the invitation.
I don't have a website yet... well I have one page up that is under-construction for years now and it would be nice to design one soon... I would probably need all the help I can get.
By the way, I'm a Mac user so I don't know if it is any different from a PC regarding website designing.

I'm a pretty good fella when it comes to fixing machines, but I've never designed a website, so don't expect too much. I hope to learn a bit from you good folks, and Thank You Raven for the generous invite
This is a great idea, Raven. Ages ago I took a computer course that included a small segment on how to create a web site. Since then I've changed computers twice and I don't have the program we used.
I followed directions and aced it, but I never went any farther. Life gets in the way and all that. But I've been thinking lately about creating a website. I have a few things I'd like to share with family and friends and emails and letters are just not cutting it. I want to put it out there and let them decide what they want to do with it, if anything.
So thanks for making it loads easier. Where do I pick up the "guide dog"? I'm joking of course. It's just an expression here that says, I really have no idea what we're doing. Give me directions like I've never done anything before because I probably don't remember a darn thing. --Linda

Yeah as soon as I get some webspace for my personal site I want to add a couple pages just for my family. Have updates about everyone, pictures, maybe do a family tree type thing and have it so my entire family even though we all live far from each other can have our own place to gather online, and also make it so everyone can update thier own info on the site and add/share stuff!
It is a great idea and nice to have!
Well I think I have some pretty good info to start with here, and if you have any questions just ask
Well, I guess it's been here all along & I've been a member for awhile, but for some reason just skip right by it when reading the Care2 threads (not many which are very friendly these days). I've learned to stay in the craft & creative outlets of Care 2 for a while now.
I taught myself HTML while ebaying - & wanting to create pages that would get noticed. I started out collecting backgrounds & borders which the old ebay used to let you do your own HTML. Now it's all done within ebay with little effort.
One of my ebay pals showed me a geocities web page she created so I did the geocities & even built it into several pages & links. Well, I got myself into trouble when I tried to do the EDITOR thingy & move all my photos, etc into categories & folders. Now nothing shows up on my homepage.
MSN groups (or communities when I started) has web page capabiities. I used to belong to a prison pen pal club which was MSN group based. Now I find there is anything & everything in the MSN groups, from scrapbooking to clip art. Geocities seems to have changed for the better also. It seems to offer more than it did when I was doing it. I guess I need to close that old page & start anew.
I've wanted to know about other free sites, but have heard that something like Bravenet is good & fairly reasonable. I'm also sure that there are more web hosts out there then when I was searching.
1st Page 2000 is a professional HTML editor / website builder which lets you create great websites fast! The visually appealing program comes bundled with over 450+ Javascripts and supports all the latest web languages. Over 3+ million downloads!
It's a heavy & in depth program & takes up a lot of resources. On my old computer it took so long to go from HTML to preview & back. I haven't used it on my new computer much, but don't have the resources problems I had.
I know alot of people who use programs to help them. I used dreamweaver for a little while. I personally like doing it myself all by hand lol It takes alittle more work, having to write everything yourself, but I find I get it just the way I want that way. I am a virgo so ya know lol
BTW, when you have your pages online everything either needs to be in the same folder or you need to tell it where to get the image from. So if you have a folder called images where all your graphics for your site is and then you have your main area for your pages you would need to go images/imagename.jpg to link to them.
Instead of just image.jpg you have to add the folder name it is in first folder/image.jpg
Hope that makes sense!
And you are right there are a ton of free hosts out there. Most suck lol. I prefer yahoo geocities as it doesn't have popups and I like the file area better then others.
I used bravenet its good too.
Do not use tripod! They have it where in the fine print everything you put on the site becomes theirs and they can use it. Plus it is popup hell lol
If you google free webhost you will find tons. Just test them out first and make sure you have copies of every page of your site on your computer.
I joined a long time ago, but obviously never got time to come here and introduce myself
My journey to making homepages started back at 1999 with the journey to internet. I had a shared site at Geocities, with SB, my husband.
Then I got myself an own homepage... and it was ok then, but now... I'm so totally dissatisfied and unhappy with it.
So - I am very interested in getting some help with both ideas and technique.
I usually use Netscape Pagebuilder - I think it is a shareware...I'm not sure. But it doesn't always work as it should, so I have to correct the small problems "by hand" and by doing that, I have learned some HTML coding.
But Raven is absolutely great with these things LOL I haven't even managed to realize how to use frames and things
Some of you may know me from other groups, but for those who do not:
My name is Damien and I am a designer of many sorts, including Web Design. My personal site is located at http://damien.bhpub.com (it does contain "commercial" content... I'm not asking anyone to buy anything... but feel free to go have a look). It is severely under construction for the moment, so many of the links do not work. As far as an introduction, from my site, you can click the "About" link in the menu to read more. In the future, it will contain more content, including Editorials, FAQ on different subjects and things of that nature. I may post up some tutorials as well... I haven't decided how much I want to expland it yet.
with this! I'm hoping to set up a website for a business I'm trying to get underway, as well as for a non-profit. I'm just barely learning about HTML, meaning that I still know next to nothing when it comes to this stuff. I'm so glad someone has a group to help with this. Thanks!

Hi, all. I had a website and helped on a few websites a while back. It has been a few years since I did anything even related to it, so I feel I will be learning all over. It is better that way, for me I think, because I was self-taught then...and I know I missed a lot.
Hi All ! I have never used many "tools" but have coded most everything I have created "raw", and have a little experience with Java Scripting, and a tiny bit in VB script. To me it is a lot of fun. Let me know if I can be of any assistance to anyone.
Hi Raven, As I posted in another thread, I'm about to get going on designing a website or template for a non-profit org I work for...I checked out your website, it's beautifully designed, and highly functional! What programs or coding did you use, did you design your own graphics, and how long would you say you spent on the entire site? again, lovely site.
I'm a graphic designer who has been inta web for about 5 years. I am a visual person and use "what you see is what you get" programs such as GoLive and Frontpage mostly, and some DreamWeaver. I can do basic html editing, and cool rollover buttons. My site is at: http://katharinesweb.net
I am interested in learning intermediate and advanced web techniques, and am hoping to pick up a few pointers. Also, I would enjoy sharing what I know.
SALAAM, I find this group and join. Insha Allah, I hope this is alright to do without an invitation. My name is Rabia. I only use computer a little while, as our women are not usually given permission to use them. I am move here close to a daughter in Nevada. I find Care2 through the email and only know about this other part of it beginning in the middle of May of this year. I have tried to learn much. Because of the language difficulty, I find books with pictures helping me. I just buy "SIMPLIFIED...CREATING WEB PAGES." I have not found any intersting Middle Eastern sites. I like very much find Middle Eastern Smiley's. Camilla make me this one I use. I have a group at: CARAVAN'S END: at the Casbah and it is surprise to me many active friends. Then I help make a group with my friend Jandi : Yah, Yah,Yah, Sisterhood Spa and Chalet. I am thinking a web site would be rewarding. I will try to learn as fast as I can. I know I am behind everyone in Computer knowledge.Rabia

Wecome Rabia, many of us here should be able to assist you with the creation of a website (or alteration of one) whether simple raw commands or through the use of a tool, just ask.
I just kind of figured out how Html works and I cannot wait until I figure out how flash works. I started a tutorial but I think it will take hours and hours for me to learn it. I would love to learn how to make it so that my photo's and pics are harder to download. I guess I can write something on it with paint, but maybe there is a prettier way to do it. The flash has the layers, that is were my tutorial ended, and I thought maybe those kan kind of hide the images...
Hello All! I am just startin' to study Web Design, on my own right now...so, I thought this site looked to be very helpful & I look forward to reading thru the lessons & learning. clueless on html ...have dabbled with some of those 'pre-setup' sites, but, never did anything on my own .
C.C. The way I started to learn was to "copy" (for experimentation only) the HTML from a static site into Notepad and fool around with the code. A book in one hand and inquisitiveness in the other

Hello, Raven, and friends all ! November 08, 2005 6:36 AM
Sorry for the delay in introducing myself ! I'm Nicholas from Madrid, Spain, a 47 year old physician that has more than one addiction; I collect Fountain pens (Vintage), old Belleek (Irish) China, and that loves the sea and sailing. I have my own domain and need to launch my webpage. It's sheafferer.com, I've only worked in the "facade", ther's nothong more. I'm here to learn about page structure and to get advice about how to work with the Magcromedia Suite and other website developing tools. Best wishes, gentle hugs to all. Nicholas
I am so glad you started yet another fantastic group Raven! I took a couple of quickie courses in this several years ago, but my job did not require it and so I was never able to really practice what they showed us. And true it is, if you do not use it you run the risk of losing it. (and yepper, there is that ‘age’ factor to consider)
All of my design/artwork jobs have been mostly for print and most can understand that when you work on pc’s all day, you can lose the desire to go home and do your own things.
This is one group that I plan to set a couple of days aside to benefit from your wisdom.
Im new to this group..hello November 18, 2005 4:44 AM
Hello there.
I just fell upon this group and decided to join because I am interested in pcs and web sites.
I have created my own web site and I would like to know how to move my text to across the page rather than down one side. You will see if you check out the link. It is a big web site!
I am going to pull a page or two down or add a new one. At this point in time I am flat out with Christmas looming and that many gigs I need ten of me to cope.
I haven't been here for quite a long time. And came back for a very particular reason that i have already explaned in the other thread: adding sounds.
Well, I'm rather impatient student since I don't know all the ABC steps yet. I'm quite familiar with HTML- to such extent that can create and edit announcements in my care2 group and I had a kind of webpage (with pictures and hotlinks) designed on my computer (not online) which had gone then my PC was under repair. and I also tried to make one page at http://geocities.yahoo.com/ but i didn't go anywhere further then their already prepared standard ones (couldn't figure out how to become more creative.
But it was before I came across this group. It's a great group and it has a great host!
I created my first website in Jan 2003 ... I was up at 2:00 am one night wondering what I was going to do with my life, lol and this ad popped up while I was net surfing. I signed up to this host the next day and used their software to create it...I became obsessed, l learned a lot and re-vamped my site a bunch of times throughout that year. Then I discovered eBay and that's when I started learning a lot more HTML...but I still have lots to learn. I've created several sites since then, and I regularly use basic HTML in creating my eBay listings. I'm wanting to sell a couple of them that I'm not going to be using anymore...but I'm not sure how (or if) I can transfer them from one account to another (the new owner would have to get an account with this host).
So these are my two main sites and my "About Me" site.
FTP or File transfer protocal is a great and easy way to send files of some size over the internet. But I am not sure I understand what you will be using it for ?

My sites are with homestead.com, I'm in a situation where I may be losing them (can't afford to pay them). I was told that with this SmartFTP program I could save them to my hard drive...or that was my understanding. My thinking was I could reinstate my websites with Homestead when I'm able to in the future.

This might be dependant on how "dependant" they are to their servers. For instance, just for kicks, I saved the "source" from a viewing of the first one as a text file. And then converted it to a HTM file and it is virtually "empty".
So, if your page(s) are dependant on their JSP or ASP servers, even if you could get the code, you would need to be able to run it.
Did you work with any "source" or "raw" code, when making those pages ?
and it took me almost a year to do it! My first time and I went crazy teaching myself. It would have been great if I'd been a member here then! Ha Ha...
Raven, your websites are really FANTASTIC!! Hat's off to you! Can't wait to get started!!
Hi yalls! I'm new here and I decided to introduce myself. I'm Nelly and I've been working with HTML and website building for a LONG time and am quite skilled in the basics. I'm going to take a class for the more advanced stuff. I have my own site up and running,*Click Here*to see it. It still needs a little more work though... I also hand typed the HTML for the site and it took FOREVER. I'm going to send a few others your way who are intrested in learning more HTML as well.
Hi all,
Just joined and thanks so much for this group Raven,
I have a lot of arts and design training but lack the digital stuff and I have found it hard to learn.
I am going to be living on this site to learn, learn and learn,
Thanks so much, I am going to really enjoy this.
Pleases to meet everyone as well !
I love your web site, I love Goth too !

I'm interested in learning more about HTML. I'm into graphics & am trying to create my page billboard right now. I'd LOVE to know how to space it all out evenly, center it, etc. So right now that's why I joined, I may want to do a website in the future, but right now I really want to make my page look nice! Thanks!

I am here to keep my html skills up. I teach Web design at a high school. My first few weeks with the students is when we create Web pages using html. After we are finished with this overview, we then start to use Dreamweaver which is a Web design tool that lets you work without needing to know all of the html tags that are available.
