Communication Commotion - words vs emotion February 24, 2005 9:38 PM

Hello Folks! Here’s the hot topic: Straight words vs. Inflection & emotion. Many people that I meet are very strict, ‘black and white’ communicators: each word is carefully chosen to mean *exactly* what they expressing. They may not always monitor the tone or volume of the voice, so something nice may sometimes unintentionally ‘sound’ angry or irritable. For others, it seems that the *way* things are said can create the bulk of the communication message – like tone & volume of voice, facial expression… etc. The actual words themselves may not be primary input for their incoming message. These folks may ‘read’ too much into some things, true – perhaps overly sensitive to things at times. When communicating with one another, people using these different patterns can end up hearing/understanding a totally different message than was intended, just due to a misinterpreted delivery! DOH! Communication Commotion! Crash! What are some ways of bridging the gap between these types of communicators? Looking forward to reading your ideas… *auricle  [ send green star]

auricle,

you have a grand question there. perhaps we each read a different part of the *total language* that is communicated by another...  Just like colors on the spectrum of a rainbow, perhaps there is a spectrum of sorts related to language, and some people are more in tune with the specific wording of a communication attempt, while another person might pay more attention other portions of the message.  Some examples might be inflection, tone of voice, stance of the communicator, etc. which might influence how the message is received.  Communication is something that requires at least two people, and whenever you add another person - you add a whole new 'spectrum' of expectations...
