SOPA-strike - Wikipedia is black on Wednesday
2 years ago

Defend the Internet. Congress Wants to Censor the Web.

Wikipedia is off combined with other known sites on Wednesday the 18th January in protest against SOPA. It's about the resistance against the proposed anti-piracy law in the U.S. Congress, which many fear is just an excuse for censorship. Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia announced on Twitter on Monday, the English version will show a black page for 24 hours, from midnight to midnight U.S. Eastern time.

The so-called SOPA-strike was originally proposed by Reddit, which perform 12 hours for a "blackout". Other large site operators such as Google, eBay, Mozilla, Twitter, Facebook, AOL and many others are also against the law. Whether they will make a protest is not known. According to Jimmy Wales, the Croatian and some other Europe Wikipedia will run a banner in other languages to decide for themselves what they want.

SOPA would be the End of the Internet as we know
The SOPA, short for "Stop Online Piracy Act", is an American bill, which was filed on October 26, 2011 in Congress. This law will, if adopted, allow American corporations to apply for injunctions against operators of Web sites, which constitute a violation of the U.S. Copyright. Supposedly it only offers the illegal films, etc. are blocked. But it could be far more: check all the possible content of the Internet under a pretext. Basically as a censorship of the Internet. What violates its own constitution and the Americans are so against any form of censorship and free speech.

If you consider what proportions it would have when one considers the entire Internet; All images and videos of products of an American company would have to be deleted, even if they themselves have been created, any attribution of an American product could because of the suspicion of possible abuse or copyright infringement will be removed. Take for example YouTube: All product reviews should be deleted, all song covers private persons, and all gaming videos if this is demanded from any American corporation. Seen in this bill also affects Europe, indeed the whole world, if Croatian, German, Indonesian, Turkish, or what do I know which pages are somehow associated with it.

Larger corporations such as e.g. Google / YouTube would have to close because they impossible on such huge platforms can control everything down to the smallest. If you like looking back, where would we be without Google - we have been pretty poor, sometimes. For not only Google would have to make theoretically dense, other search engines like Yahoo, because the sites are displayed in search engines could potentially contain certain "content" and so should no longer be displayed. And so the search engines directory more and more empty. The same with social networks like Google +, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Since they can not control these huuuuge platforms, they would have to close. I personally do not think much of other social networks than c2, but for many it would be a dramatic loss of their purpose in life.

Did I forget one? Yes, sure. Our lexicon that has helped us many times in emergency situations: Wikipedia. With SOPA and the downfall of this online wiki would be sealed, because calling every American company, who are themselves or their products on Wikipedia, the deletion of data. Hence the vehemently protest of Jimmy Wales.

On the official site of the SOPA is still so beautiful: "Save the Internet". What a joke. But that manipulation and perversion of terms like Orwellian "war is peace," has always been the hand tools of the powerful and works with most of the population.

Who is behind this Internet censorship? Of course the usual suspects, the big corporations. They say the law would serve to protect copyrights ("Intellectual Property") and related companies, and jobs. Also, it was necessary to equip authorities with resources that allow them to enforce the copyright with respect to foreign Internet sites.

Have distinguished themselves as supporters, in particular large media groups and their interest groups, such as the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). And the big media houses and those who want a police state, tend toward the complete control of the Internet. Should this law be passed, so the Internet is bleak in my eyes and not as we know it.

But as already mentioned, there is hope, because the major site operators have already distanced themselves far from this law. Yes, Google, thus YouTube, Facebook and Wikipedia are now so far and want to "strike", ie their services for a set period of time, and instead show an appeal against the SOPA. They want to have a sort of "Rise of the Internet community" in which I participate also, because at least the Internet should remain as the last place where one can post his free opinion, no one that gets immediately stuck a plaster over his mouth .

That's why I also call on the SOPA opposition !

Oppose Internet Censorship: Help Defeat PIPA And SOPA

The confusion arised because allegedly SOPA came to a halt.

But not PIPA...

Appologizes for that.

Oppose Internet Censorship: Help Defeat PIPA And SOPA
Internet censorship legislation is barreling through Congress, and could come up for a vote in the next couple of weeks.

Please fill out the form at right to ask your lawmakers to oppose the legislation -- and visit StopCensorship.org to ask for the Senator who's going to filibuster the bill to read your name into the record from the floor of the Senate.

Here's what the Washington Post wrote about it last week:
Imagine a country where the government is able to shut down Web sites at the slightest provocation, where elected representatives invoke fears of "overseas pirates" to defend the interests of domestic industries, and where Internet companies like Google must cave in to the demands of government censors or risk being shut down.

No, we are not talking about China, North Korea or Iran — we are talking about the United States, where legislators in both the House and Senate are attempting to push through new anti-piracy legislation by year-end that would benefit Hollywood at the expense of Silicon Valley.

The Stop Online Piracy Act would ruin so much of what's best about the Internet: It will give the government and corporations new powers to block Americans' access to sites that are accused of copyright infringement, force sites like YouTube to go to new lengths to police users' contributions, and put people in prison for streaming certain content online.

ACTA

SOPA, PIPA and ACTA (Global Internet Censorship) is of concern for everyone, this is where power hungry globalisation has outstretched it's tentacles...

But there is more.

While we were distracted, fighting SOPA by all means, they also have made PIPA what we was not aware at the beginning.

And if this - I call it bamboozlement - was not enough, they made:

ACTA !
What's ACTA? The abbreviation "ACTA" stands for the proposed plurilateral trade agreement, "Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement".
The participating nations or confederations of states indicate that the fight to try to improve against piracy.
The supposedly growing problem of counterfeiting and piracy should be tackled better with the agreement.
The secret negotiations have been running since 2008 and is expected to be completed this year.
The participating parties are to Switzerland, the U.S., EU, Canada, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.

For over two years now the ACTA agreement is being negotiated. It is pushed by the G8-countries and some befriended states under secrecy.
Its effects will concern us all.

We demand the stop and a transparent publication of the negotiations.
There are strong indicators that ACTA will interfere fiercely with the civil liberties of every citizen.
