Horse meat containing cancer causing drug 'may have entered food chain' says Labour

Mary Creagh, the shadow environment secretary, said that "several" horses slaughtered in the UK last year wre found to contatin traces of the carcinogen phenylbutazone.

She told the Commons: "I am in receipt of evidence showing that several horses slaughtered in UK abattoirs last year tested positive for phenylbutazone, or bute, a drug which causes cancer in humans and is banned from the human food chain.

"It is possible that those animals entered the human food chain."

Bute is widely used as a pain killer for horses but has been linked with bone marrow and liver problems in humans.

An investigation by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland found earlier this month that four British supermarkets, including Tesco, had sold burgers contaminated with horse meat.

Iranian Space Agency to send monkeys into space
2 years ago

The National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAV has called plans by the Iranian Space Agency (ISA) to send monkeys into space in the coming weeks a pointlessly cruel and retrograde step in space research.

Recent news reports have stated that a number of primates are currently in quarantine and an unknown number will be sent into space at the beginning of February, during a 10-day period when the Iranian Revolution is commemorated. One article refers to a failed attempt to send a monkey into space in 2011 although no further details of this mission were given.

U.S. scientists will retire most research chimps

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Government scientists have agreed that all but 50 of hundreds of chimpanzees kept for federally funded research should be retired from labs and sent to a national sanctuary.

The proposal from a National Institutes of Health committee also said all of the chimps should have plenty of room to play and climb.

The NIH Council of Councils Working Group on Tuesday approved the proposal, which also calls for major cuts in grants to study chimps in laboratories and no return to breeding them for research.

Already, nine chimpanzees arrived Tuesday at Chimp Haven outside Shreveport, La., from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's New Iberia Research Center, which no longer has an NIH chimp research contract. Seven more are expected Thursday and another 95 will arrive over the coming months, sanctuary officials said.
