From a Texas pound to being honoured on TV, this year's Hero Dog Award winner is nothing short of amazing

For most of us, “all in a day’s work” chiefly involves running out the door somehow already slightly behind schedule, putting in a marathon day at the office, attempting to get dinner on the table at a reasonable hour, and somewhere squeezing in a couple dog walks between the myriad other demands of our day. “Heroic” relates to our attempts at keeping our eyes open past 10 pm. For the inspiring nominees in the second annual Hero Dog Awards, though, their day’s work more accurately reflects the true meaning of the word.

It was for these exceptional canines, dogs that perform exceptional tasks with unwavering dedication, that The American Humane Association’s Hero Dog Awards was created. (Unfortunately, eating dinner really fast does not count or our dogs would be a shoo in.) This year's winner definitely deserves the title “hero.” From humble beginnings in a Texas pound to his deployment as a Specialized Search Dog in Iraq, Gabe rocked the vote with support from his thousands of fans and strong social media presence. During his impressive career with his handler Charles Shuck by his side, Gabe completed over 210 combat missions, visited wounded troops, and toured schools. Now retired, this heroic canine continues to spread goodwill and promote the importance of staying in school while demonstrating that there are absolutely amazing dogs sitting in shelters waiting to show you what they’re capable of. Way to go, Gabe. 2013’s Hero Dog will have some big shoes to fill.
The Hero Dog Awards airs tonight at 8 pm ET/PT and 7 pm CT on the Hallmark Channel.

American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards

The Hero Dog Awards were created by the American Humane Association to celebrate the powerful relationship between dogs and people. The annual national competition searches out and recognizes America’s Hero Dogs – often ordinary dogs who do extraordinary things, whether it’s saving lives on the battlefield, lending sight or hearing to a human companion, or just welcoming you home at the end of a hard day.

The 2012 Hero Dog Awards will be hosted by film and Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth. Chenoweth joins a roster of celebrity supporters of the Hero Dog Awards, including special honoree Betty White, red carpet host Joey Lawrence and celebrity judges Whoopi Goldberg, Victoria Stilwell, Candy Spelling, Miranda Lambert, Kristin Bauer Van Straten, Michelle Forbes, J.R. Martinez, Tinsley Mortimer, and Megyn Price, among many others.

Dogs may be nominated in eight categories for the Hero Dog Awards: Law Enforcement & Arson Dogs; Service Dogs; Therapy Dogs; Military Dogs; Guide Dogs; Search and Rescue Dogs; Hearing Dogs; and Emerging Hero Dogs (the category for ordinary dogs). Finalists in each category will be judged by a blue-ribbon panel consisting of both celebrities and animal experts, to determine the winning American Hero Dog.
