BITS OF INSPIRATION--stories, poetry, quotes August 03, 2009 4:57 AM

The old inspirational stories thread was getting long so I went ahead and unpinned it.  When I started to put up a new one, I thought I'd make it a little more general.  I enjoy poetry and often find poems that are beautiful.  So I called this 'Bits of Inspiration"  and we can post other things besides stories without wondering if it fits the thread.

I'm starting it off with a poem and scripture.

Psalm 27:4

One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

Oh, Thou art beautiful! and thou dost bestow

Thy beauty on this stillness:

Still as sheep the hills lie under Thee;

The waters deep murmur for joy of Thee;

The voids  below mirror Thy strange

fair vapors as they flow;

And now afar upon the ashen height,

Thou sendest down a radiant look of light,

So that the still peaks glisten,

and a glow rose-color

tints the little snow cloud that poises

on the highest peak of all.

Oh, Thou art beautiful!--the hills are bowed

Beneath Thee;

On Thy name the soft winds call,--

The monstrous ocean trumpets it aloud,

The rains and snows intone it as they fall.

Best Day of My Life "Inspirational message" September 01, 2009 4:16 PM

 BEST DAY OF MY LIFE

Today, when I awoke, I suddenly realized that this is the best day of my life, ever.
There were times when I wondered if I would make it to today; but I did!
And because I did I'm going to celebrate!
Today, I'm going to celebrate what an unbelievable life I have had so far: the accomplishments, the many blessings, and, yes, even the hardships because they have served to make me stronger.

I will go through this day with my head held high and a happy heart.
I will marvel at God's seemingly simple gifts:

the morning dew,

the sun,

the clouds,
the trees,

the flowers,

the birds.
Today, none of these miraculous creations will escape my notice
Today, I will share my excitement for life with other people.
I'll make someone smile.
I'll go out of my way to perform an unexpected act of kindness for someone I don't even know. Today, I'll give a sincere compliment to someone who seems down. I'll tell a child how special he is, and I'll tell someone I love just how deeply I care for them and how much they mean to me.

Today is the day I quit worrying about what I don't have and start being grateful for all the wonderful things God has already given me. I'll remember that to worry is just a waste of time because my faith in God and his Divine Plan ensures everything will be just fine.

And tonight, before I go to bed, I'll go outside and raise my eyes to the heavens I will stand in awe at the beauty of the stars and the moon, and I will praise God for these magnificent treasures.

As the day ends and I lay my head down on my pillow,
I will thank the Almighty for the best day of my life.
And I will sleep the sleep of a contented child,
excited with expectation because
I know tomorrow is going to be the best day of my life, ever!

I saw the Conquerors riding by
With cruel lip and face wan:
Musing on kingdoms sacked and burned
There rode the Mongol Genghis Khan;

And Alexander, like a God,
Who sought to weld the world in one:
And Caesar with his laurel wreath;
And like a thing from hell, the Hun;

And leading, like a star the van,
Heedless of upstretched arm and groan,
Inscrutable Napoleon went
Dreaming of Empire and alone…

Then all perished from the earth
As fleeting shadows from a glass,
And, conquering down the centuries,
Came Christ, the Swordless, on an ass.

                      rose

It is only a tiny rosebud,

A flower of God's design;

But I cannot unfold the petals

With these clumsy hands of mine.

The secret of unfolding flowers

Is not known to such as I..

GOD opens this flower so easily,

But in my hands they die.

If I cannot unfold a rosebud,

This flower of God's design,

Then how can I have the wisdom

To unfold this life of mine?

So I'll trust in God for leading

Each moment of my day.

I will look to God for guidance

In each step of the way.

The path that lies before me,

Only my Lord knows.

I'll trust God to unfold the moments,

Just as He unfolds the rose.

Here's another poem.. I posted a brief verse of it on my greeting graphic tonight, but it is so touching I want you all to enjoy the whole thing.

Let Evening Come

Let the light of late afternoon
shine through chinks in the barn, moving
up the bales as the sun moves down.

Let the cricket take up chafing
as a woman takes up her needles
and her yarn. Let evening come.

Let dew collect on the hoe abandoned
in long grass. Let the stars appear
and the moon disclose her silver horn

Let the fox go back to its sandy den.
Let the wind die down. Let the shed
go black inside. Let evening come.

To the bottle in the ditch, to the scoop.
in the oats, to air in the lung.Let evening come

Let it come, as it will, and don't
be afraid. God does not leave us
comfortless, so let evening come

Jane Kenyon

If You Can Hear Me Lord

If you can hear me, I think we need to talk.   I've tried to be a Christian Lord, I've tried to walk the walk.

But every time I've tried it and the closer that I came,      Satan's always been there to play his little games.

He always comes between us Lord and always seems to win,  So teach me how to overcome the wicked ways of sin.

If my life's worth saving and I'm welcome there with you,  Teach me how to beat him Lord, teach me what to do.

I've hurt a lot of people, and I know I'm not worth much,
But help me be a Christian, Lord, and watch the lives I touch.

I'll put forth the effort Lord, just you lead the way,      Guide me through the scriptures Lord, and teach me how to pray.

Of course I'll need some wisdom though, that's what I need the most, A little touch of faith would help, perhaps a double dose.

And if you have some handy, Lord, I'll need some courage too, Some extra strength devotion, and I guess that ought to do.

But just for extra measure, during times of great demand, Add a bit of patience to what I have on hand.

And with these tools, I'm ready now, to start my life   anew.    For every life I've led astray, I'll try to win you two.

When my life is over and my journeys reached it's end,
     I'll proudly say to Satan, this time you didn't win!
