One usually doesn't get info about the following year's gathering till a few months before..rumor has it that it will be either somewhere in New England or the Midwest.

The last Gathering I attended,I was fortunate enough to spend time in the Rasta Camp (There are various camps at the gathering) Great time of meditation and reasoning.

“WELCOME HOME!” Those are most likely the first words you will be greeted with when entering a Rainbow Gathering. Now a global phenomenon, Rainbow Gatherings take their roots in the counterculture of the late Sixties. A Rainbow Gathering can bring together anywhere from a few hundred people to tens of thousands for the larger ones, particularly in the United States. This is Freedom’s home!

Brewing with the colourful energy of people from all walks of life, Rainbow Gatherings are all at once an event, a process, an experiment, a way of life and a state of mind. Here you will find Punks, Hare Krishna devotees, Conspiracy Theorists, Druids, Bikers, Ecologists, Nomads and Radical Faeries joyfully co-existing in a truly alternative reality.

Some people call them 21st century hippies.

But whatever name you decide to give them, it looks like they're coming to the Black Hills.

It's called the Rainbow Gathering, the participants, the Rainbow Familyof Light.
They gather in a national forest somewhere every year.

The group's website says this year's event will be in one of eight states including South Dakota.
Friday, Black Hills National Forest spokesman Scott Jacobsen says they believe there's a 95– percent chance they're coming to the Black Hills National Forest this year.

He says a National Incident Management Team arrived from Washington last night meet with forest officials, law enforcement and others to get ready.

Jacobsen says the gatherings have been attracting about 8,000 people in recent years.

This year's event is scheduled from July 1st through the 7th.
Jacobsen says the Forest Service's main concerns are that the gathering is peaceful and organized and that there is resource protection and fireprevention

Some controversy over this year's Gathering..

For more than 40 years a cadre of hippie culture devotees has gathered every summer somewhere in the country.

Known as the Rainbow Family, the group never encountered resistance from Native Americans.

Until now.

The annual celebration of peace and love -- served with all the trappings of a 1970’s Be In -- draws up to 20,000 people.

An advance guard of celebrants is in Hill City preparing for the July 1 event and some Native American activists are upset saying the Rainbows didn’t show proper respect to the tribes by asking permission for their encampment.

“They did not take it to the will of the people and that's the Lakota Nation itself because, remember, the Lakota Nation and never ever gave up nation status,” said Canupa Gluha Mani from the Strong Heart Society.

Rainbow Family members met with Native and tribal representatives Monday in Hill City to try to come to an agreement. Rainbow envoys noted that they’d never had friction with Native Americans before and, though no formal agreement was reached, held out hope that common ground could still be attained.

“This is one of the first times, I think, that we've had people who are actually indigenous to the area where we're at not want us there. So that is maybe a little bit unique,” said Rainbow member Phoebe Xavier from Perth Amboy, N.J.

Added Rainbow member Daniel from California:

“We're always looking for consensus, we're always looking for inclusion. The whole Rainbow Gathering is based in inclusion and love and non aggressive self expression. We're looking for consensus. We're always hoping to see things come together. That's what the world needs more of at this point.”

And while the two sides were discussing their differences, one Rainbow Family member shared his thoughts on the conflict.

“I believe all land is sacred so when these people say this land is sacred, I grant that,” said Ryan Smith. “It's sacred. It's all sacred. So to me, telling me not to go there because it's sacred is telling me not to exist.”

The Rainbow advance guard plans to meet on Wednesday at their encampment outside Hill City to decide whether to proceed with the full gathering next month here in KOTA Territory or move the event elsewhere.

It is good that they are talking to them, because it seems that what they are all about is peace and love.I hope that they can work things out.Location does not matter as much as the spirit of a thing.

Rainbow gathering on track

This, despite opposition from some Native American groups.

I always went to the one in Vermont, while I was there.  Then there was a national in Vermont and one year in Granville VT and the  town became the second biggest city in Vermont.  (58,000)

Some of my neighbors here in Arizona have already left for a national in Michigan...wonder where they will end up.

I went to two "nationals" in 1993, one in Kentucky and one in Alabama, very disappointing year because of the controversy about where the national should be and no one got to see old friends.

Decided to stay in Arizona this year.

Thanks for the updates, David.  I wish I was at the National today .....July 4 and the silence and meditation is going to be soon.  I close my eyes and I can here the drum circle NOW.

Thinking about tomorrow at the national.  Blessings there and blessings here......we just got to keep trying because that may be what we are born to do, can't think of a better reason to be born.
