Animals Asia has added its voice to growing calls to stop the annual
summer solstice dog eating festival in Yulin in the Guangxi Zhuang
Autonomous Region, China.

It takes place this year on June 21st with animal welfare activists
already lining up against it in large numbers.
An open letter from Animals Asia in opposition to the event has been
sent to the Guangxi Yulin government. Copies of the correspondence have
also been shared via Animals Asia's Weibo

a thousand shares and hundreds of comments - the vast majority in support.
The letter had been forwarded to the Mayor as well as representatives
from the Tourism Bureau, Health Bureau, Cultural Bureau, Husbandry and
Veterinary Bureau and the Food and Drug Administration.
Online opposition has been further boosted with criticism of the event

Animals Asia will again be sending out thousands of leaflets in

Animals Asia China Cat and Dog Welfare Manager Suki Deng said:
"We have written to the local authorities to lodge our complaints and to
outline the cruelty involved and the dangers of eating dog meat. Beyond
this we believe that an industry largely driven by illegal means should
have no place in a civic event such as this. Each year opposition to
the event grows and the publicity surrounding the event becomes less
favourable.
"There are other elements to the festival and to remove the dog eating
need not spell the end of the festival itself. The truth is,
considering what we know about the industry, stolen pets will be among
those dogs consumed. In addition by taking part, people will be
endangering themselves as disease can easily spread through dogs
trafficked in this way."
Animals Asia founder Jill Robinson added:
"We have heard the argument that dog eating represents Chinese culture
and tradition. We have long answered that culture and tradition are no
excuse for cruelty and brutality. We would also like to point out that
China has an increasing culture of animal welfare and heightened concern
over practices such as these. Traditions should not be above criticism.
Neither should they be exempt from change.
"In Chinese society dogs are becoming increasingly recognised for the
help and assistance they provide to those in need. We now have guide

dogs as livestock, so the sale or distribution of dog meat cannot be
banned or regulated.

Is South Korea's new President a secret dog lover? President Park Geun-hye received two Jindo pups as inauguration gifts. Jindos are the most widely used breed of dog in South Korea's illicit dog meat trade, which kills two and a half million dogs a year.
The dog meat trade exists in a legal blind spot caused by conflicting regulations. Please help IDA help dogs and cats in South Korea! Send a polite message to President Park on Facebook and/or Twitter, asking her to expand her love for her new canine companions to include all dogs in South Korea by banning the horrific dog meat trade, completely and permanently.
Dogs in the meat trade are electrocuted, hanged, beaten to death, and have their throats slashed. They are thrown into tubs of boiling water, then into rotating drums for the removal of their fur, and then they are blowtorched, often while still conscious. The prevailing myth is that the more suffering endured during slaughter, the more tender the meat and more potent the so-called "medicinal properties."

I have just searched this out because I remembered that the good old Daily Mail exposed this tiger farming for wine over 2 years ago.Warning - Some of you may not want to look at this.

How can anyone deny the Tigerwine. There was a worldwide petitions on a Friday 1 1/2 year ago to try to stop the auction in China of , i believe , 200 bottles tiger wine for extremely much money with extremely rich people. The petition was for the Governor from that area , and asked to forbid the auction. There were in less then 24 hour so much signatures that it maybe helped , the auction was canceled a few minutes for it would started.
But before that petition , I also did not know and I cannot believe someone will drink that.
Lenicka - you certainly find things out. I did not know about Italy either, though of course I know about tiger bone wine. There are people who do not believe tiger bone wine is still made but they are deluding themselves. One of them sent me a message the last time I made a comment about it on one of the petitions and denied it happenned. In a country where they boil dogs alive and are responsible for driving rhino to extinction anything is possible. There are no civilised countries in the world - every day something happens that proves that. Within every country however, there are some civilised people.
I first read it in a book a dutch writer who was going to live in Italy. He became friendship with small wine farmers ,the wine more for family use. He was going to help in the wine season. Then the farmers told him that it was a old tradition and of course not very liked by the outsiders. But that it was very good for the wine.
Later I saw on You Tube , where I was in a discussion with someone that says that cats in Italy had the best life in the world , provided that they would not be castrated , reactions of Italian people that attacked him , told that they know that cats are eaten in a lot of areas.
I remember that there was a petition here where this fact was mentioned too. I was very shocked about that wine story , the writer - that only wrote in that time about his live in that village - maintains that it is true and that it was common for a long time.
It's of course not in the wine of big wine companies. I even did not believe it , till I saw that it was an old tradition in China too , for the Rice Wine. And it still will be in the small villages. They make still expensive wine of tigers , why not with cats?
The fact that they eat cats in Switzerland I saw on the website ,I posted below and after that I hear that is was in Italy too. I think Fulvia , in Italy you have such as much backwards peasant , as in the rest of the world with there stupid so-called old traditions.
And what they all do with animals in our civilized area is also not very nice. How many ladies know that the base of their expansive perfume are the anal glands of a civet-cat ? That the anal glands is painful harvest every day from civet-cats that live their whole live in small cages ? How many vegetarians knew that the gelatin on their puddings , in all the candy's ( Haribo) etc. are made from bones? So how many things in our live , we think that are pure , sweet or smells good , are based on disgusting ingredients ? Cheese with a rennet stomach as ingredient? So after all this I would not surprised that the cat-wine story is really true , like the writer insist . I will try to find the book and let you know more Fulvia , maybe you can contact the writer then.

But what about the rest of the world ? In Italy - on the countryside - they take a cat for fermentation of the wine , just like the Chinese did ( or do?) with the rice wine. And I think that a lot more people on countrysides in the world , also do this. In the US there are centers from where a Asian breeder distribute on-line purchased cat meat. That means that selling and distribute cat and dog meat is not forbidden in some US states.

Thousands of cats are sold to the Guangdong restaurants, and most of these cats come from other provinces where cat nabbers have become infamous all over China, terrorizing cat owners who fear that their cats may be stolen to be sent to Guandong restaurants. The shocking side of this story that's making human beings all over the world shiver with indignation is that cats are skinned and dismembered alive, and still alive when thrown into boiling water to finally finish a most hellish suffering with their last breath.
It is with profound distress that I am writing to you regarding this most Inhumane treatment of cats and ask you wholeheartedly that you put a stop to it immediately. The West is horrified by so much vileness, and this will certainly not be a postcard that China would want for the world to see. It is because of these practices of a minority that the important and rich Chinese culture and history have become so stained and repudiated by most countries which have adhered to humane laws to protect the most defenseless members of our planet: the animals. It will not be difficult for China to adjust to this new era since most Chinese people abhor these extreme cruelties. The minority in your society who delight themselves on this type of cruel bloodshed are a few and they will only destroy China's respectability around the world. Surely, not all Cantonese are proud of the smell of blood tainting their culture and history.
Quoting General Secretary Hu Jintao on December 18, 2008 commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the reform: "the spiritual poverty is not socialism," can be translated also for non-humans as these practices are certainly a great poverty of spirit and one that will bring shame to the Chinese civilization. It is now a good opportunity to follow on his Excellency Hu Jintao's footsteps to a rich and spiritual socialism.
Respected Guangdong Provincial party committee, the provincial government, Guangzhou Municipal party committee, the municipal government leads: These acts have driven people around the world beyond their limits of forbearance. There is nothing that should justify such horror, let alone something as selfish as the culture of food based on the suffering of the innocent and the defenseless.
I appeal to your conscience and the compassion that you surely have in your hearts, to put an end to so much suffering inflicted upon the most defenseless members of your society: the animals. Please make it illegal for butchers to inflict so much pain and agony on the voiceless and defenseless animals. Please investigate these atrocities, and forbid any food and beverage that is based on cruelty, and capture and destroy the suppliers and sales of live animal companions for food, immediately. Modern laws and regulations must be instituted immediately to avoid this type of traffic and the extreme suffering involved with it. No nation should have to be embarrassed of their own country because of a minority that can only bring shame and disgrace upon itself. It would be to the great advantage of China to put an end to this horrific treatment of animals to show the world that it is also compassionate and civilized, and has the ability to be an effective part of the third Millennium.

Dog meat (and also cat meat) is a brutal business and its rising ! Now Thailand gets more and more involved in the trade, too..
What can we do? Never stop our protests and outcries and support orgas who rescue these poor animals from a cruel death.
I have to comment again - I cannot get this picture out of my mind - who took it, who stood by and watched these poor animals being brutally slaughtered. Why can teams not go in and rescue these animals? I will never be able to get over this. The only way to end this is to send people in and if they can't rescue all the animals then give them something to put them to sleep forever then these bastards can start eating each other. They are barbaric low life rubbishes and they need to be eliminated as soon as possible.

A través de la presente deseo saludarlos muy cordialmente y a la vez manifestarle mi rechazo a la celebración que se lleva a cabo cada año, el día 21 de septiembre en “La Quebrada”, San Luis de Cañete. Nos referimos al festival “Curruñao”, donde se matan gatos para para consumo.
Nos causa preocupación la tolerancia del ex alcalde, Paulino Antezana Urbinano, de la actual alcaldesa de San Luis DELIA VICTORIA SOLORZANO CARRIÓN y de las autoridades nacionales y regionales que hasta la fecha no prohíben el consumo de gatos en dicho festival pues esto no solamente va contra la salud de las personas, ya que la carne de gato no es apta para el consumo humano, y contra la Ley de protección a los animales Nº 27265, sino también nos hace quedar a los peruanos como bárbaros y retrógrados ante el mundo.
Tal hecho abominable, el de matar gatos para consumo, tiene un origen solamente demagógico y politiquero, iniciado en los años 90 por Jorge Brignole Santolalla, ex alcalde de Cañete y persona de dudosa reputación, con el fin de congraciarse con parte de la comunidad cañetana. Es absolutamente falso que se trate de una tradición, como se excusan los autores de dicho festival, pues no hay ninguna colectividad afro en toda América que coma gatos, solo ese grupo peruano.
Sabiendo que la alcaldesa de San Luis, persona sensible, razonable y que administra el Municipio con la idea de hacer que los ciudadanos de San Luis de Cañete alcancen el más alto nivel en calidad de vida en un distrito moderno, saludable y desarrollado, les solicitamos tomen medidas acordes con la Ley Nº 27265 para prohibir esta matanza, pues en ella se especifica lo siguiente:
Artículo 1.- Declárese de interés nacional la protección a todas las especies de animales domésticos (….) contra todo acto de crueldad causado o permitido por el hombre, directa e indirectamente, que les ocasione sufrimiento innecesario, lesión o muerte.
Artículo 4°.- Obligación de autoridades y de instituciones protectoras de animales.
4.1 El Estado y las instituciones protectoras de animales debidamente reconocidas quedan obligados a velar por el buen trato, salud y respeto a la vida y derechos de los animales.
Artículo 19°.- Sacrificio de animales domésticos no destinados al consumo humano. El sacrificio de animales domésticos no destinados al consumo humano sólo se efectuará por causa de inhabilidad física, accidente, enfermedad o vejez extrema, excepto que constituyan un riesgo para la salud humana. En esos casos deberán ser sacrificados por las autoridades competentes del modo que señale el reglamento.
Por lo expuesto solicito que NO SE AUTORICE el festival “Curruñao” y se dé una Resolución Municipal para sea prohibido. Asimismo, se impongan las debidas sanciones a quienes intenten llevarlo a cabo, patrocinen y/o fomenten.

Thousands of cats and dogs are farmed and slaughtered in South Korea
for human consumption. They are slaughtered in the most brutal and
barbaric ways imaginable with the prevailing myth that the greater the
suffering, the more tender and tastier the meat and that mythical
health properties are enhanced.
To be used in soups and "tonics", the animals are often bludgeoned,
thrown into a tub of boiling water while often still alive, and then
into a rotating drum for the removal of their fur, and finally
blow-torched.
In cases where they are not boiled alive, they are electrocuted,
hanged beaten to death.
This is technically illegal, yet the industry of cat and dog meat
cruelty continues.
I demand a ban on cat and dog meat or I will boycott of the
PyeongChang 2018 Olympics in South Korea.

This is the latest tragedy of Thai dogs which happened (again & again ) in the early morning on Sat.28-July-12 , The amount poor dogs that were rescued this time were 779 dogs. After they were rescued... they were transfered to Nakorn Phanom's shelter in the same day. The dogs looks so terrible, scary, hungry and very weak. After we took them out of the cages from the truck, we found out 18 dogs already passed away because they couldn't stand with their painful, so today (28-July-12) we have the total amount of alive 761 dogs.This shelter now have more than 1,300 dogs at the moment. PHUKET: The Soi Dog Foundation has launched the Trade of Shame Campaign in a bid to raise awareness of the growing dog meat trade across Asia.
The Thai Veterinary Medical Association estimate as many as 500,000 Thai dogs per year make the one way trip to Vietnam and Southern China where they are butchered by cruel and barbaric methods.
John Dalley, the founder of Soi Dog Foundation said, “The conditions under which the dogs are transported and slaughtered are horrific and many die from suffocation long before they reach their final destination. In reality these are the lucky ones.”
He added that although there was no concrete evidence, he had reason to suspect that dog-rustling was taking place on the island, “There is no evidence of the rustlers operating in Phuket, though some local people believe that the disappearance of the large number of dogs removed from Patong Beach in May 2011 may have gone there.
“Soi Dog Foundation have plenty of evidence showing that local dogs, particularly black ones, have been snatched by migrant workers for local consumption in labour camps on the island. This is most prevalent around New Year and owners should keep their dogs secure during this period.”
The current law for the illegal export of live animals and carcasses allows up to a 2 year jail sentence and B40,000 fine.
The Trade of Shame Campaign needs the help of everybody to raise awareness and stop this cruel trade before any other dogs are killed.
