Stop Phoenix Air's shameful death flights

Phoenix Air Group was recently contracted by Novartis to transport a group of 23 yellow Vervets monkeys from Barbados, where they were caught in the wild, to an animal testing facility in Italy. News about the transport leaked out and the flight which was supposed to land in Rome Fiumicino on August 1, 2012 was cancelled the day before out of fear for bad press.

Dear attendee of the Measuring Behavior 2012 conference,

It has come to my attention that Noldus Information Technology will
participate in this year’s Measuring Behaviour Conference at the Uithof in
Utrecht. Investigation by the Anti Dierproeven Coalitie (Dutch Coalition
Against Animal Experimentation) points to Noldus strategic partner Delta
Phenomics as one of the interested parties to expand their use of laboratory
animals at the Landerd Campus in Schaijk, a former MSD location that is
currently being redeveloped. I fully support the Anti Dierpreven Coalitie in
their efforts to stop more animals falling victim to animal experimentation,
there and elsewhere.

Already Delta Phenomics is performing invasive experiments on animals,
including pinching off the hind paws of mice in chronic pain research and
depression studies that involve placing tame mice in a cage with aggressive
congeners.

These experiments display a total lack of respect for animals as sentient
beings that can experience fear and pain and fail to recognize the intrinsic
value of animals. In my view all animals have the right to a life free of
exploitation.
I ask you to turn your back on animal experimentation and direct your
collective efforts towards reliable research with human volunteers. I
encourage you to address this issue with Noldus and take the opportunity to
discuss the ethics of animal research at the upcoming conference.

Sincerely,

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I am in receipt of public registries which verify that you are a substantial donor to the University of Florida. While I commend your generosity and the noble intent to further higher education, perhaps you are unaware that your money is funding cruel, frivolous and barbaric experiments on primates and other animals.

For 14 months, UF tried to keep their monkey experiments hidden from the public. In December of 2011, activists finally won their lawsuit – the Eighth District Alachua Circuit Court ordered them to release their records to the community.
The pictures of which we are in receipt document stunning cruelty. They may be viewed HERE.

http://www.negotiationisover.net/2012/07/05/exclusive-horrific-pictures-from-inside-ufs-monkey-labs/

The veterinary records which explain the images confirm that monkeys are forced to live in excruciating pain in stark violation of animal welfare law.** Others are routinely force-fed poisons, toxic dirt, subjected to horrific mutilations and almost all are made into drug addicts.

Every monkey without exception lives in constant deprivation, trauma, misery and fear.

I am urging you to withhold any further support until all primate experimentation ceases and the monkeys are released.

These experiments are very cruel, unscientific and senseless; but highly lucrative. They net almost $500 million dollars annually in taxpayer-funded federal grants. Therefore, as a donor of distinction to UF, you are in a unique position to demand a compassionate and ethical research policy to guide this institution into the future.

Subject: Univ. of Florida

Dear PricewaterhouseCooper, Sir, Madam,

I ask you to stop contributing millions of dollars to the University of Florida. They torture primates in archaic, fraudulent “science” experiments- when shareholders and clients could benefit instead from these funds. You must formally tell UF that you won’t be donating another dollar until they ban primate testing- or you will be exposed to your clients and the public for supporting the agony and death of baby primates when non-animal alternatives are available. There is NOTHING you can claim to do for children, families or society that makes this OK.
I await a response from you that includes a copy of your letter to UF denying any further funding until they ban primate testing. Do you think your shareholders, employees and clients throughout your global corporation are aware that you CHOOSE to support primate experiments instead of giving those millions back to them?

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA:

- UF refuses to ban primate testing while the rest of the world is doing so in all universities. Because of this, their own alumni dues and support have begun to dwindle. http://emptyallcages.com/category/university-of-florida-2/

- UF CHOOSES primate torture, most times using 2 and 3 year old primate toddlers, when there are thousands of non-animal alternatives available to teach and use right now http://emptyallcages.com/non-animal-alternatives/

- UF broke the law, was sued and lost to us when they refused to submit their veterinarian records for the primates they have hurt. http://www.negotiationisover.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/judge-lotts-order-jan-5-2012.pdf

- UF is also single handedly “uneducating” the educated. They have a campus slaughterhouse where students can learn butchering. Is that horror what you thought Disney would be donating money to? http://cdn3.demotix.com/news/599893/tommy-estevez-fun-loving-butcher#slide-1

There’s no way they can possibly “clean up their act” because they have become very cruel and disturbed individuals.
I know you wouldn’t want to be associated with hurting animals or a university mired in controversy. In order for you to not be compliant in these heinous experiments, you MUST stop giving money to UF until they ban primate testing.

Mail protest: THE NEW YORK TIMES SUPPORTS PRIMATE TORTURE

THE NEW YORK TIMES SUPPORTS PRIMATE TORTURE!**

PLEASE DO A QUICK COPY/PASTE FOR THE MONKEYS! First we will inform this enormous corporation and its affiliates about what their exuberant donations to the University of Florida buys- primate torture and archaic frankenscience. Then, if they don’t formally announce a delay on their donations, we will hold them accountable by letting the world know that they refuse to stop funding UF primate torture. Tell The New York Times( NY Times, Boston Globe, About.co m) NO MORE DONATIONS TO UF until primate testing is banned!!

It has come to my attention that the University of Florida Foundation donors are responsible for providing $3.2 BILLION in support of UF and as we know they spend it on primate torture. Unbelievably, these donors include corporations who state they act to benefit society; Walt Disney, AT&T, Ford Motor Company, Office Depot, Walgreens, Bank of America and more. Also included is $10M category donor Kellogg who claims to care for the world’s children, and Anheuser-Busch most recently famous for formally denouncing the horrible and cruel event SnapperFest, saying they love and respect all animals. These giant corporations are hemorrhaging money into UF’s Death Camp and they need to be held accountable for what their money funds.

Primates are imprisoned in the University of Florida labs, poisoned, sickened, and killed when alternatives are available. Among 1000s of other animals, more than 200 are forced to endure painful experiments without anesthesia. UF has lost a lawsuit to animal rights activists and the vet records of agony and torture are now being made public.

*TIP* Most can see the subject and 1st line of an email. Try using something to do with their business instead of animals for these two like “Mitt Romney News Tip” (smirk!).

You have to send the letter in Italian

Dear Senators,

The Senate is debating amendments to art. 14 relating to animal testing.

Like most Italians, I am particularly concerned about the plight of animals in laboratories. That is why I ask you to vote in favor of banning dog breeds, cats and primates for vivisection.

Today I would like you to think about the case "Green Hill" that has affected many people in Italy and outside the country. Citizens showed they were concerned about signing petitions, demonstrating, in writing to you ... etc.

Like me, you probably noticed an awareness and a growing opposition to the use of animals for scientific research, because these animals are sentient beings, and they can not be treated as material laboratories.

Without your vote, Green Hill farming could resume its business with new animals. We do not want history to repeat itself. We do not want other Green Hill. All these farms have to close the shame.

So please do not disappoint all those people who rely on you, and that require you to save these animals. Protect the pain they are forced to endure in laboratories and give priority to requests of the people and not the economic interests linked to animal testing. This would be an important sign of respect for democracy.

Thank you for your attention,

Cari senatori,

Subject: Phoenix Air Group

Dear Mr. Thompson,

It is our understanding that Phoenix Air Group was recently contracted by Novartis to transport a group of non-human primates from Barbados to Italy. The animals were destined for laboratory experimentation.

I urge you to dissociate Phoenix Air Group from the cruelty and suffering of the international trade in primates by refusing to transport primates destined for the research industry.

Each year, on the islands of Barbados and St. Kitts & Nevis, hundreds of green/vervet monkeys are torn from their families and forest homes and either exported directly for biomedical research or imprisoned on farms to produce offspring to be exported to laboratories around the world. Once wild and free, these sensitive and intelligent animals end their lives in laboratories where pain and suffering are routine.

There are an increasing number of airlines that were once carriers of primates, but which now refuse to transport primates for the research industry.
Airlines that have made this compassionate decision include leading cargo airlines such as Lufthansa Cargo, Cargolux and DHL Aviation, as well as the major airlines American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways, British Airways, Korean Air and Caribbean Airlines.

Thank you,

from R.B:

Dear Sir/Madam

I happen to be an adult with a lazy eye. I am 60 and I have used one eye only in my entire life. The vision in the other eye is so low that cannot be corrected by any lens.

I find your tests revolting and totally unjustifiable (even if they were useful, which are clearly not). In fact we are not cats. The eyes of cats are very different from human eyes.

Let us not fool anyone (I know university and university research pretty well): it’s all a question of money and grants, nothing to do with “oor ill children” and human suffering you like so much to invoke when challenged. It’s not in your interest (and in the interest of medical research) to make people healthy, as it is not for the big Pharma. If humans were all healthy you would be jobless.

Vivisection is a 400 years old method with an average of success around 33%. This means that you would have more chances to get it right if you threw a coin! Descartes died a long time ago, time to move on, ethically and technically. When I read of such tortures I feel ashamed of belonging to your same species. I wonder how you can sleep at night.

With deep disgust. (Care2 member, signer known)

Cardiff Univ/kittens: what's new in this answer...

30 July, 2012

Dear Anneke

Thank you for your email expressing your concern about the research involving cats at Cardiff University. We do understand the feelings this issue has raised and are grateful to everyone who has contacted us to express their views.

Firstly, this experiment ended in 2010. As with all of Cardiff University’s medical research, it had the ultimate aim of reducing human suffering. As you may have read, this particular research aims to treat amblyopia, or lazy eye. Lazy eye affects two to four per cent of all children and means one eye has deteriorated because it suffers some disadvantage to the other eye. If untreated, it leads to very poor vision, even blindness in one eye. Sufferers are also at risk of complete blindness where they lose sight in the good eye.

Lazy eye can be treated in young children up to about eight years by such measures as the wearing of eye patches. However, in older children and adults, as the brain increasingly prefers images from one eye, the condition is not curable. Our scientists aim to find out why the brain adapts to changes in vision at a young age. This particular research has improved our understanding of the molecules controlling this process in the brain. We hope, in time, these findings will lead to a treatment for adults and older children, although we should stress this could take some years to achieve.

You may have read claims that there were other ways to obtain the same scientific data. Unfortunately this is not true. Cardiff University and the Home Office do not allow any research involving animals where alternative methods are available. The experiment was approved by both the University’s own ethical review process and the Home Office Animals in Science Regulation Unit. The research was independently monitored throughout to ensure standards of animal welfare were met.

You can find out more about this particular research at:

http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/news/mediacentre/mediastatements.html

More information about the University’s policy on animal research in general, and the way we are looking for alternatives, can be found at:

http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/racdv/resgov/Resources/CUanimalstatement%20March%202012.doc

The University rejects the accusations made in the media that this experiment was cruel or unnecessary. We do, however, respect the views that you and many others have expressed and you can be assured that the University will always listen to these opinions.

Yours sincerely

Subject: Experiments on Animals/Univ. Florida

As an influential member of the UF community, I am urging you to withhold any further support until all primate experimentation ceases and the monkeys are released.

These experiments are unconscionable and unscientific, but highly lucrative. They net almost $500 million dollars annually in taxpayer-funded federal grants. Therefore, as a donor of distinction to UF, you are in a unique position to demand a compassionate and ethical research policy to guide this institution into the future.

Please visit www.universityofflorida.us for further information and become an objector of conscience.

Sincerely,
