In the United States, thousands of tigers languishing in tiny, filthy cages and are dropping off the radar daily as there is no one monitoring what happens to them next.
"Generic tigers" that are inbred, crossbred or otherwise not considered purebred, are discarded into the pet trade, warehoused in tiny, barren cells or worse; ending up on dinner menus, skinned, stuffed or disappearing into the black market trade.
Back in the 1980s the US Fish & Wildlife Service decided it was too much bother to deal with every back yard breeder who wanted a permit to breed tigers, so they created a "generic tiger" loophole.
It essentially states that if you are not a legitimate American Zoological Association accredited zoo, which must conform to permitting requirements to breed purebred tigers, then you can breed, exploit and discard tigers at will and with virtually no oversight.
Please rescind the "generic tiger" loophole and require that all tiger breeding require a high costly permit that insures the lifetime care of the tiger.

Subject: Stop Bobcat Skin Exports
Secretary of the Interior
U.S. Department of the Interior
1849 C Street, N.W. / Washington DC 20240
The most recent population estimate for the United States is more than 25 years old and there are no population estimates for Canada or Mexico.
According to 2001 statistics provided from actual sales of hunting permits, over 40,000 bobcats are still being killed each year. This figure does not include all the bobcats killed by hunters who do not buy licenses nor report their kills. Less than 3% of our population are hunters but they kill over 100 million animals each year for sport.
They are also trapped in the wild with cruel leg-hold traps for their fur, which is made into garments. More than 53,000 skins are traded internationally every year and the level has increased five-fold since 1995. The United States is the largest exporter.
The illegal trade in endangered and threatened lynx species and bobcat skins cannot be distinguished even by forensic analysis from those of other lynx species, including the critically endangered Iberian lynx, and other endangered and threatened lynx species including the Eurasian lynx, Canada lynx and Mexican bobcat.
I urge you to stop exporting bobcat skins. There hasn't been a population estimate in over 25 years, therefore you couldn't possible know if the cat is endangered, or when it might become endangered.

Subject: Two Mountain Lion Kittens killed/CA
Director Charlton Bonham
CDFG Office of the Director
1416 Ninth Street, 12th Floor
Sacramento, CA 95814
On Saturday, December 1st, the California Department of Fish and Game shot and killed two mountain lion kittens in Half Moon Bay.
MLF, the public, and wildlife rescue groups throughout California are now calling out the Department, saying their actions were unjustified and unacceptable treatment of a state protected mammal.
The Department said attempting to tranquilize or capture the 25 pound cats was too risky and would put the public in danger. Wardens ultimately killed the pair, claiming it was, "absolutely the last resort for us."
Based on weight, the lions were likely months younger than estimated, and kittens less than one year old are still entirely dependent upon their mother for food and care.
There is no excuse for this lack of knowledge by the department about mountain lions.
California wildlife rescue expert Jay Holcomb said that, although the wardens had to weigh the public safety issue carefully, trapping the animals would not have been difficult.
"Let's face it, these are cubs. They're easily capturable," said Holcomb, former head of the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council and current director of International Bird Rescue. "You can go to the store and buy some chicken and they'll be on it in a second. It's a no-brainer."
In addition to a simple baited cage, catch poles, net guns, and tranquilizers are also non-lethal options the Department should employ.
A spokesman for the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, which handles animal control in San Mateo County, said wardens put in a request Saturday for a pole syringe and tranquilizing drug but didn't follow through.
Wildlife rescue groups and veterinarians throughout the state are ready and willing to assist CDFG with mountain lion calls. Urge Director Bonham to utilize these (free!) resources for the benefit of California's wildlife.
The law authorizes CDFG to deal with dangerous animals but does not give them permission to kill kittens out of convenience.
The new policy should include:
Non-lethal procedures for resolving public safety wildlife incidents.
Changing the Department's internal position to allow the relocation of mountain lions, and the rehabilitation and eventual release of young or injured individuals.
The creation of a database of wildlife professionals willing to help tranquilize, capture, temporarily hold, transport, collar, provide veterinary care, and/or release mountain lions at no cost to the department.
Mandatory training for wardens in the use of non-lethal drugs and capture methods.
These methods are currently being used by wildlife agencies in other states. It's time for California to catch up!

Dear Madam, dear Sir,
A tiger reserve in India is under threat of being flooded by closing a dam to irrigate for agriculture.
Kutku dam is part of the inter-state North Koel River irrigation project, in Aurangabad district, India. Closing the gate of the dam would irrigate agricultural land in Aurangabad and Gaya districts in Bihar- but it would also flood and submerge Jharkhand's Palamu Tiger Reserve.
The area under threat is the prime tiger habitat and it is rich in wildlife and biodiversity. The forests are the breeding grounds of tigers, leopards and elephants. Due to submergence, traditional migratory routes of elephants will also be blocked.
According to section 38 V (4) (i) of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, critical tiger habitats have to be maintained as inviolate for tiger conservation.
Please save Jharkhand's Palamu Tiger Reserve!

Subject: Protect the New Mexico Cougar
New Mexico Game Commission
One Wildlife Way
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87507
To whom it concerns,
The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (Game & Fish) proposes to wage war on the State's cougars (a.k.a. mountain lions, pumas, or cat amounts) by increasing the quotas on breeding females. That means it will quickly devastate these majestic cats and orphan numerous kittens who will then perish from starvation.
Game & Fish wants to move to a four-year decision-making cycle that would effectively cut out the public and even the Game Commission--the rule-making body that oversees the Agency--from the process. Game & Fish seeks to limit the publics right to object to radical quota increases by restricting access to the rule making process. New Mexico's cougars could very well be wiped out before our right to defend them comes around them again in four years' time.
Killing cougars will not make people or livestock safer, nor create more deer, elk, or bighorn sheep for hunters. The Agency's proposal focuses heavily on female cougars, and that means it will quickly devastate these majestic cats and orphan numerous kittens who will then perish from starvation. Based on fear, this proposal fails to use the best information available about how to effectively manage for a sustainable cougar population.
I ask the New Mexico Game Commission to reject increased quotas on females.

I'm very concerned about the fate of tigers remaining in Thailand (there are fewer than 300).
I read about the new dam project that threatens one of their last intact habitats. The project would destroy a national park in western Thailand- flooding 8 square miles where tigers are having a sucessful recovery.
The Mae Wong dam also threatens tiger natural prey species such as wild pig and sambar deer.
Creating the dam will push tigers out of their habitats and into direct conflict with human beings.
The Indochinese tiger is already under threat from shrinking habitat, illegal trade in tiger parts for traditional medicines and a scarcity of prey.
With only 3,200 wild tigers remaining worldwide, I ask Thailand to support conservation efforts and protect critically endangered tigers and their habitat- not destroy it with the Mae Wong dam project.
Thank you for your time and attention,
