Woodland Park Zoo has artificially inseminated Chai 112 times without a birth.
Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants applauds Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter, Michael Berens for uncovering what zoos desperately try to hide from the public: elephants are dying due to zoo captivity.
They are suffering from a number of physical and psychological ailments, such as arthritis and abnormal repetitive behavior, that are characteristic of elephants whose complex needs are not being met.
Berens' has shed light on the squalid conditions in which Bamboo, Chai, and Watoto have been kept for decades .
I urge Seattle and King County officials to demand that Bamboo, Chai, and Watoto be retired immediately to an accredited sanctuary.

I'm so glad with this Tony petition after all the Sandlin propaganda yesterday.
I saw that 'good live' of Tony on videos a friend of me sent me very regularly the last, more than 2 1/2 years.
I see always a big cat that walked and walked along the bars. Left , right ,left ,right and than a few moments on that roof and than again and again that walking.
And than that noise from all the trucks , terrible.
What a stupid argument that the owner loves Tony and that they are bonded.
When I would captured a cat in a cage , I can say a million time that I love that cat but my behavior isn't like that.
And of course that cat is glad to see me. It's his only fixed point in his live of boredom and he also associate me with feeding, the highlight of the day.
In humans we call this the Stockholm syndrome.
I think it is the same for animals.
Tony must go to a sanctuary. They wait for him since the court Judgment. Sandlin spread the lie that they are not ready for him . And also the lie that they will declawing him.

I remember reading somewhere about Berlin Zoo wanting to get rid of their group of older chimps because they were not interesting enough. This was over 10 years ago and I was not internet friendly then so do not know the outcome.
Palmyre Zoo in France has a 19 year old male chimp hidden away somewhere. The story is that he escaped from the group and instead of putting him back they put him somewhere away from view and on his own now for 3 years.They won't send us pictures of him and won't raise money to help rehome him here although they would be happy for the Sanctuary to pay for it all. They have effectively put him in prison - his name is Tsavo.
Do you know which one is the WORST zoo in Germany Jan? It's the Berlin zoo, the famous Knut zoo ! No wonder Knut died so young. Once they made a TV docu and a wolf needed anesthetics to show a treatment - then the film crew said the spot wasn't good enough and if the treatment could be repeated. They did it and the wolf died from anesthetics overdose!!!!!!!!!!
There are 100's of examples of abuse in Berlin zoo, a friend of mine has them on his site (unfortunately its all in german language).
And I agree with you: while many santuaries need more donations, zoos never lack of money (at least the big zoos). Its a shame
You are absolutely right Monika. The Zoos I mention had many donations from the public to help rescue the animals but at the same time these animals have living conditions so vastly improved from what they had before that it is still a good thing that they did it. Being Zoos of course they have a huge PR machine to help fund raise which Sanctuaries do not have. The video of Anne's rescue is on our website and to see her at Longleat now it is difficult to believe she is the same elephant. The cynic in me is overridden by my gratitude that these animals are better off now than before!!!!!!!!!!!

This is very interseting Jan ! I don't know any zoo that rescues animals ! And the ones i know are all breeding ! Some zoos are known for selling animals (f.e.wolves) to poachers or to PTS animals as soon as they grow bigger because they lack the space to keep them : as long as they are babies they attract visitors and afterwards they are of no use anymore.

There is a big document World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Strategy which I have just read because our little Sanctuary (gallingly) has to be inspected by Zoo Inspectors in order to have the visitors who pay for the rescue and care we provide.One of the questions on the form is how we take this document into account in our planning!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a pity they do not practise what they preach. Many of the zoos we have seen on our missions are horrendous places and the ones I have seen on here so many times. You should read it and see what wonderful words they write. The Inspectors always get on our case because we do not breed - why would we add to the problem and consign more apes and monkeys to a life of captivity? None of the Zoos were queuing up to home any of the primates we have here when they were often facing execition because no one would give them a home.When we started in 1998 the 7 adult chimps we rescued were going to be shot as the Zoo closed and all the UK Zoos were going to stand by and let it happen. Very few Zoos rescue animals - Longleat took Anne the circus elephant ( we transported her to Longleat last year), we took 3 circus bears to the Five Sisters in Scotland this year. Yorkshire Wildlife Park accompanied Graham to a Romanian Zoo in Oradea and saw the horrific plight of the 13 lions there - they all now have a home in Yorkshire.But these cases are very few and far between.
It is all very well to produce an impressive document but who is enforcing animal welfare standards on the Worlds Zoos and Aquaria?

Dear Premier Redford, Honorable McQueen, Wildrose Party Leader Smith, NDP Party Leader Mason, Liberal Party Leader Sherman:
I am writing you to express my concern regarding the appalling living conditions of the animals and the lack of safety precautions for visitors at Guzoo Animal Farm, in Three Hills, Alberta. The court case dealing with Guzoo’s judicial review has been adjourned for many months with no explanation from any party, and Guzoo remains open, despite the order to decommission and close Guzoo from the Alberta government in June 2011.
After over 20 years of government inaction regarding this deplorable roadside zoo, I was ecstatic when the Alberta Government's Department of Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) announced they were shutting it down with no appeal in June 2011.
However, even though Guzoo owners claimed that they didn’t have enough money to upgrade the facilities, they were able to afford to hire a lawyer for an expensive appeal process. Thousands of people, including myself, are shocked, frustrated, and disillusioned that the SRD has apparently caved to Guzoo with no explanation.
Although concerned people, myself included, are pleased that this matter will eventually be resolved in court, we are concerned that Guzoo is no longer a pressing issue for the Alberta Government. Above all, we are concerned that the Guzoo will continue to disregard legitimate complaints regarding public safety and animal welfare. This concern is not unfounded, considering the Guzoo’s blatant disregard for the court-ordered conditions that had been agreed upon prior to the facility being permitted to reopen. Guzoo is supposed to be operating under multiple court-ordered conditions, many of which have been violated, including public contact with controlled species such a wolves.
I am still wondering how the government’s enforcement arm, SRD, can ignore the report from the May 2011 CAZA-led investigation of Guzoo, based on Alberta Zoo Standards? The report clearly shows that the June 1st, 2011, decommission was not recommended solely due to record-keeping or aesthetic problems with Guzoo Animal Farm, as Guzoo’s owners have claimed.
There are many shocking revelations mentioned in the investigative report. One particularly heartbreaking and stunning piece of information is the account of a bear who died recently after attempting to dig out of her enclosure and become trapped in the resulting hole. The bear was not removed and perished in the pit she had dug. Animals were often fed unsafe road kill, and one tiger died as a result of consuming "dead stock tainted with barbiturateâ€.
Deficiencies with regard to animal care, husbandry, staff training, animal health, public safety, and public health are all outlined within the report. The report also makes it very clear that not only does Guzoo have deficiencies in all areas of zoo operations, but it also outlines how unlikely, if not impossible, it would be for the zoo to ever be brought up to the arguably minimal Alberta Zoo Standards.

The operation of Guzoo Animal Farm has been an ongoing issue for over two decades, and it is an embarrassment to the majority of Albertans. The internet is full of reviews from foreign visitors decrying Alberta for our lack of animal welfare concern after their visits to Guzoo; there is no reason for this facility to remain open. Please consider the mountains of evidence against this facility and what keeping them open says about the regulatory powers of this government.

We here in the Netherlands are very near to a total prohibition for wild animals in a circus . Only very near because you never know with politicians. And I think that the circus directors are going in protest because they say that their animals are not ' wild' anymore. Born in captivity.....
