Up to date here. Sorry to be absent for a couple of days but we woke up a few days ago to find our lovely old gentleman chimp Freddie had passed away peacefully in his sleep - old age caught up with him and we cannot prevent it. It is always hard when a member of our family dies but we have to keep hold of the fact that he has had 12 lovely years here after a lifetime of abuse part of which was in a circus being made to ride a bike., and another few years being made to smoke in a zoo. The tears still fall and we will all miss him.

RSPCA article is very interesting - I know of numerous horses they have refused to do anything about and I know of others where they have victimised the wrong people. I am pleased that their actions are receiving publicity because they are always bleating on about needing money. Perhaps what their executives earn might bear some looking at and what they actually use the new fancy building for.
The other afternoon some one phoned me about two goats and they had tried the RSPCA number for 20 mins with no reply.

Most people who release Chinese sky lanterns have no idea of the harmful and even deadly consequences they can have for animals.
Lanterns can cause suffering to animals in a number of ways. Animals have accidentally eaten fallen lantern wire parts which can cause internal bleeding, leading to a slow painful death. Other animals have become entangled in the wire or bamboo frames and injured themselves as they struggle for freedom.
Here are just a handful of reported incidents
- A foal had to be put to sleep after his legs were so badly injured from bolting through a fence having been terrified by a Chinese lantern.
- An East Sussex farmer found a calf being choked by a Chinese lantern.
- Holly, a nine-month-old goat, died after the frame of a lantern punctured her throat.
- A farmer in Chester told how a cow died when the wire from a Chinese lantern punctured her oesophagus after ingestion, saying “in effect [she] spent a long, painful 48 hours suffocating on her own feed.”
The RSPCA and many other organisations including the Marine Conservation Society, Women’s Food and Farming Union (WFU), Soil Association, the National Sheep Association and National Farmers Union (NFU) are calling for a ban on Chinese lanterns.
