Welcome to the compuer problem & support group February 06, 2005 12:02 PM

Well, I guess you know by now that I've had computer problems over & over during the past 10 years I've had various computers (learning on DOS). Most of my knowledge has come from technical support through the years from various vendors such as Premier, Packard-Bell, Hewlett-Packard, Epson, Canon & Konika-Minolta, etc.
I can un-plug, un-install & re-plug, re-install in a matter of minutes. I have it down to a perfection. Numerous printers & add-ons, data boxes, etc. have added to the headache of compiliant hardware/software.
Most recently, I've been getting ERROR messages logging off (which is a BiOS or Windows error). Ugh!
Sign-in, state a problem & maybe, just maybe somebody else has a workable solution for you. Thanks!

HELLO!! February 06, 2005 12:47 PM

LOL, unplug, replug, install .... LOL .... that was funny.

Anyhoo, I am a comptuer "geek".
My senior year of Highschool, I took 2 college classes for comptuers ( one was Java & the other was HTML ).

And My 1st year of college I took all the programing classes I could find...But lost interest quickly just because I knew from those classes I didn't want to spend my life sitting behind a computer screen.

So I switched over to my #1 passion, health care!  Where I took nursing classes for a year & had to put my education on HOLD after a major accident I had June 17, 2004 - where I got diagnosed with RSD/CRPS in my right foot up to my knee.

I just learned how to walk again the middle of December (04) and with my Dr's telling me I have another 2 yrs of recovery & NO WORK, SCHOOL or DRIVING, I'm bored to death so I love seeing what I can do next with computers.

I have 2 websites.
I'm so proud of my personal site:

And I have a Sims2 site!

And I also have a CARE2.com group on RSD/CRPS!
http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/RSD_CRPS

HeHe.

Thanks for the invite!

Yeah, Casey M. Glad to have you aboard.... Learned HTML by myself (to jazz up my eBay sales pages). But these here on C2 are not easy to edit. Have the HTML kit & 1st page by Eversoft.I created several family groups on MSN groups & one on geocities.

I also was in nursing until my family members started dying that spring & it was too  much for me to handle. I abandoned school for work (no stress there!)... then marriage... then kids.... etc.

Sorry to hear about your wreck. Don't know what RSD/CRPS is... care2 explain (unless you'd rather not I understand)? I know about med probs tho ~ falling apart!

Invite all your friends. Hope this is a good site for people to visit & support.

RSD/CRPS is Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy/Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome.

There are 2 types.

*CRPS Type I (also referred to as RSD) - cases in which the nerve injury cannot be immediately identified
*CRPS Type II (also referred to as Causalgia) - cases in which a distinct "major" nerve injury has occurred

I have major nerve damage.  HeHe.  Type 2.
I pretty much am cursed with this for life....BLAH!!

I will invite people!
I like this!
Thanks!!!!!!!!

Oops, Casey M. , I made a mistake. Mark M. already has a group; Computer Problems 101. I just joined his group. Well, if we can't make a go of it here, I'll disolve this group.

Mark M. Yours is a good one ~really in-depth! Probably won't be able to understaned the language there.

Well In Casey's words I make my living "sitting behind a computer all day"

I got my BS and MS in Computer Science together in 5 years. I currently work as a software engineer for Raytheon Co.

All through my college years I worked in computer support part-time. From house calls, service desk, to managing support hot-line phone room.

Hope I can be of some help here...I might post about a scanner problem I'm having too ^_^

HI February 07, 2005 9:17 AM

With the help of Bill Gates, I have fried lots of computers over the last 25 years.
I may have learned something from it all, but you know how Gates is.  He likes to keep his software bugs one step ahead of us.  I'd be happy to put my two cents in here occasionally.

Hi Lyn and friends of this forum,

Thanks for inviting me to join this wonderful forum. We never know when we are in need to solve some of the computer related problems that may crop up sometime or other. After all I am no computer geek. So I'll be too happy to keep in touch with you all. Thanks for the help you have extended to us relating to computer problems. It will certainly be of help to the majority here at Care2.

Once again thanks for your invite.

frustrated October 29, 2005 4:27 AM

Hi, folks, joined this group (which I found by chance) in the dim hope of finding an answer to a recent problem. I own a P4 XP computer (Fujitsu/Siemens SCALEO) which one Sat morning refused to work, saying "TCP/IP not installed". The basic functions work, although slowly. It cant be a bug because the last "healthy" action was an automtic virus scan with the newest definitions (NORTON). Several calls on the help line (a frustration source by its own) brought no usable remedy. I found out that more than half a dozen hardware units signal "no driver loaded" but when deactivated and reloaded refuse to accept the driver from the resource and utility CD ("most recent driver already installed"). I am now looking for an axe - or does anyone have an idea???

anonymous Guenter October 29, 2005 9:44 AM

Hey I sent you the same invite I sent to Jaz I don't know why you didn't recieve it... Any way to you question...
Have you ever "repaired" your XP installation? Or ran a CHKDSK?
Let's start with the CHKDSK... go to start, run, type in "cmd" then enter...cmd screen, type... CHKDSK /R    enter...   you will then be asked a question to let it run at your next restart... select Y then enter..... then restart the pc and let it run and repair itself....
If That doesn't clear up your problem them I will give instructions on repairing the XP installation...
I will tell you, I do not care for Norton... The AVG is a much better antivirus (in my opinion) but opinions differ... I also like the Kerio Personal FW4 or the Sygate that are free... And the Kapersky which you must buy...  Kerio is #1 with me... As with any other program they have to be learned and programed to suit your computing needs...
I was constantly getting worms and viruses with Norton... but I have friends who love it...
I have been told the McAfee Security Suite is Fantastic (by a lady from my bank)
I hope I helped with the CHKDSK....
Love and Blessings~Joanne

Great Group!!! October 30, 2005 4:06 PM

I just found you guys, and am I glad to be here!  I, too, have fried numerous machines (or did they fry me?  The pain in my head would suggest the later...)  I have one in the garage that just refused to turn on one day....  of course it contains all my best programs, songs, pictures, etc, not to mention the magazine article that was due at the time...  so one of these days I'll get around to finding out if it is a simple fix or not.... in the mean time, I have another new computer.  And then it got a Trojan virus because the geeks at Best Buy told me that Norton System Works included Anti Virus but that was apparently untrue.  So now it is mostly working again (after a week and a half with the Geek Squad and $100+ later)  although somehow it reconfigured itself yesterday and I had no internet access (requiring 1 1/2 hours with the tech guy on the phone trying to fix THAT problem...and I forgot to aks him WHY it would have done that in the first place...)  Boy, I had more free time when we didn't have computers!!!!

Well, I'm glad to be a part of this group, I enjoyed reading the threads!

Take care,

Roxie

Thx for the invitation, Joanne...looks like a great group...I am on my 3rd computer...all were previously owned...2 of them I bought on auction on internet...never been disappointed with them...but when I got my first computer...a small, slow Packard-Bell...I KNEW NOTHING!  ...and I had to teach myself everything...hands on...what a job...but thru LOTS of trial & error...many errors..haahaa...I am fairly computer-savvy....

Nice to be here!

XP trouble November 12, 2005 9:00 AM

Hi, Joanne, thanks for your hints. Well, Norton is in my email providers package, with live update. I had no problems with it (and bugs) for ca. 4 years. I ran checkdisk as suggested and it went all the way through without error message. Then the PC shut down and restarted with the old error message. You are probably right that its best to install XP from scratch.  I did not respond earlier for the reasons you know. BTW, the sign-off error you described is quite familiar to me, hehe. Help, Please!!!!!!!!!! December 11, 2005 8:37 PM

Hi all!  I see all these great pics in threads and in testimonials sent to me and I CAN'T figure out how to get the pictures into my stuff.

And I can't get anything but the html in from quizes etc... like what is your elf name... silly, but fun, and I had the cutest name (Snooky Fluffy Paws) but I couldn't post it...  I'm going to try a picture in here, maybe it'll be like the car at the mechanics and actually work....

Nope, I copied it from my pictures, but there was no paste option in here...

Thanks for the help!!!

Take care,

Roxie

This problem comes up a lot, Roxanne. A quick guide:

1. Right-click the image and "copy location".
2. Go to where you want it to appear, and type

<img src=" LOCATION OF IMAGE ">

(without any spaces)

This should work for any image on the internet, but not one on your own computer. Hope that's clear enough!

Additional Help January 01, 2006 9:43 AM

Just thought I would add myself to the list of people with technical skills that are willing to help others with IT problems.

I have been working in IT since 1996, starting in computer repair and maintenance, through systems administration,  business analysis and currently a Reports Manager for a Scottish local council. I have skills in PC hardware, Windows (most flavours, even DOS and Windows 3.1), Linux, MS-Office applications (including Access), Web development, Programming and numerous other applications and systems.

I will try and monitor this group for questions I can answer and put my 2 pennies worth in if appropriate.

I do not know what to say except to the group and all helpful input is appreciated, ask what you will and I will attempt to find an answer if I don't know the answer... or one of the other nice members will, I am sure.

Hi - I've just come across your group. I've done a tiny bit of computer work (easy stuff) - but I'm still wanting to learn more - and at times require help but usually got to battle it out myself. It's no wonder you don't hear the screams from where you are with me trying to solve the problems!
Thank you for forming this group - it's just what I need. Who are the leader/s of this group?

I have belonged to my current user group in Australia for 22 years and can't say enough about joining your local user group or forming one. These days nearly every problem has an answer in Google but unless you know a little, you can't be sure which solution is reliable or applies to your situation.

To find a user group or for tips on how to start one, go to the umbrella body for user groups: http://www.apcug.net.

Well, I guess you know by now that I'm not online much & rarely get to C2, but I will check in when I can.

Life has a way of changing -- just when you think you've got it down pat... POP... something else.

Oh well, I'm going back to school this summer. I've checked into the MSU Business Administration program, but found something I might enjoy more... Business Information Systems -- more computer knowledge.

Anyway, this summer I'm signed up for algebra, algebra & more algebra, plus a microcomputer course. I've had one already, but it was a techincal class & doesn't transfer (don't do that if you want to transfer your hours for a degree).

A'm glad you all joined -- please don't jump ship just because I don't get here... you are meant for each other! I have no way of helping anyone... I'm always in need of help. That's why I'm going back to school.

Please keep me in your prayers as I undertake this new venture in my 55 years of lifetime study... actually I feel too old to go back to college... it's been 20+ years! I'm NOT good in math!

Anywho, keep up the good work. Anyone who wants to moderate this group is welcome to do so. Just let me know... ncl

Glad I found this group! Every time I think I have achieved at least low-level "geekdom," something happens to prove otherwise. For instance, right now, I am in the middle of a debugging nightmare that is really throwing me for a loop.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

My Queendom for a geek! July 30, 2007 1:24 AM

My HP Pavillion 753n with xp is crazier than I am.  It crashed!  Then I did a system restore, as it would not let me do a roll-back, cos it said it had NO date to rollback to.  (my first of many 'HUH?'s' in this situation)  So I did a system restore.  Factory settings.  I finally got it to recognise my external (G) drive, and little black box that connects me to to internet, and my HP1100 series p/s/c...that was okay but not great for about a day...things were slow, but responding.  Then I go away from my computerer and when I come back it is a black screen saying something (and a long bunch of letters and numbers) was compressed that I should press CTRL+ALT+DEL.  I did.  I got the previous screen telling me to press CTRL+ALT+DEL.  Well, I may not be a computer genius, but I am not that dumb that I could not figure out I was going in a round robin.  Nothing I did helped.  Not rebooting, not F2.  So, guess what?  System restore AGAIN.  This time, things won't open, I have to go to AOL through IE.  Using the icon for AOL (v. 9VR ed) is just useless.  Things take forever to load and open.  (if they do)  Then, I cannot display my security settings....

It is a good thing I do not have a baseball bat in the house.  I don't think I would have a running computer.  I have tried everything I can think of.  I even installed System Suite Pro 7.  I am co-host of an autism group (my two kids are autistic), and I really need a working computer.

Someone PLEASE help me on this issue.  It is pure frustration to have to wait (and wait, and wait) for the simplest of pages to open, the simplest of downloads take forever.

My internet is through my cable, I have AOL through them.  I also have (supposedly) Roadrunner High Speed connection.  I am tempted to open my computer up and see if it is run by a wheel and a rather tired rodent.

Thanks.
