Have you ever had problems withMS Word? I 've has MS Word for about 10 years now. I just upgraded from 9.0 (1983-1999) toMS OFFICE 2003. There are many of the same features, but difference in using Win 98 & Win XP. Usually, I just work on it until I stumble onto something like what I want it to do. I like to get it personalized & really get upset when it changes.
Anyway, I've never learned about macros, etc. And, I'd like to learn about things like that. I use mail merge quite often, but this new WORD is giving me fits w/mm.
If anyone else usesMS WORD, will you please come in here for discussions about WORD (any version). It's so hard to get to get tech support forWORD.
Personally, I like the OpenOffice.org productivity suite much more than MS Office. I highly recommend trying it (though you may want to wait until version 2.0 is out of beta first; otherwise you'll have to download the giant installation file again). It is nearly fully compatible with MS Office (they're still working out bugs in OpenOffice.org Base - database - but otherwise, it works great), and it is FREE for anyone who wants to use it. So to answer you question [Have you ever had problems with MS Word?] I didn't like it, so I switched to OpenOffice.org.

I use MS Word and love it. I haven't had a problem with it and I started with Office 97. What I always find helpful with each upgrade is to print out the help topics for anything that looks different. Then walk through them step by step with someone else who "reads" while I "do". I had class on Office 97 and have forgotten more than most ever learn about using office, simply from not using the features enough. ie - drawing a logo.
I started withWordPerfect 5 (dos) which I used at school & bought the educational version. I then purchased WP7suite (92). It was cool. But when I changed over to MS WORD, the deal was done. I've been trying to upgrade every new version they come out with. Sometimes, to I useCorel WP7for a change.
I never try anything new with them. I type for people & everything is fairly simple. And, with ADD (attention deficit disorder) it's hard to "read & comprehend" manuals. I'm a "hands-on" instruction type of person. I hate cut & paste large articles when one word or step-by-step will do. I just wish they had tech support for WORD or WP that doesn't charge an arm & leg!
This new version has the built-in speech recognition & handwriting pad for my i-pen. I had boughtAOL's Dragon, point & speak for my Win 98, but this software seems to work better than the AOL program. I haven't taken the time to build the speech yet, but I love the pen. Keeps my hands from getting tired.
Eccentric K.what is the OpenOffice.org??? How much will it cost? I like to have the backup disks since I've had a hx of having to re-format my hard drive with my older machines, it's just habit with me now.
I didn't even load the WORD suite 2000 since this one came loaded with MS OFFICE. But I do miss theHome Publishing(create greeting cards, etc). I loved working with it.
Eccentric K.what exatly does the OpenOffice.orgdo?? I had problems trying to download. It gave several sites to d/l from. Then it suggested I need a security patch, which I couldn't access. What's wrong with d/l the beta?

About OpenOffice.org May 15, 2005 6:15 AM
OpenOffice.org is a free productivity suite compatible with MS Office. It features a database, a spreadsheet, a drawing (not like MS Paint), a PowerPoint-like program, an application for typing math equations, and a text editor. As far as downloading it goes, there are some things I need to know first 1) What country will you be downloading it to? (USA, Canada, England, etc...) If you are downloading from the USA, this one works fine. 2) What program did you use to download it the first time? Browsers don't work very well in this area; I recommend Star Downloader. It is also free of both cost and spyware. 3) Are you downloading via DSL or Dial-up? It takes about one hour to download on slow DSL, and way too long on Dial-up.
I've used all versions of WORD, love them all except the older versions.
Usually not online too much but when I am here I will or do answer questions if they are questions that I know the answers too.
I've found that when techies aren't around , the best place to get help in WORD is at the HELP button right there at the top of the screen.
Sometimes there are chat rooms with computer techies in there but most times they are no more experienced than the average computer user.
I'm a little too tired right now to be reading or responding to questions but wanted to check in here because I just found this cool group , this one about computers. glad that someone began this group. I think it will be quite helpful to lots of people.
About word problems more serious: I 've found the best repair for my own computer is the RESTORE program in XP. Once i save everything important on disks , I can totally restor my computer to new condition and it works wonderfully .
You can do this without using disks. If you have XP just go to
START
RUN
Type in RESTORE there in the RUN box
THEN click the icon in there that says RSTRUI or something lke that .
Your computer will be restored back to the date that you like.
Great invention. Fixes most computer problems.
Don't do this before you save ALL PROGRAMS and files just to be sure.
So have your WORD disk and your ID number available BEFORE doing any restore work.
You might lose some things and if you have them on disk , you have no worries.

I was near an expert in Word Perfect, Macro's, long list, that was in the early 90's with several other computer formats under my belt. I never got into Corel, they changed it too much when I finally was able to get a inhome computer and with Corel on it.
I have Word, now Word 2003, which doesn't even recognized some of the former Word formats I typed documents in prior which frustrating as some are relative to my case.
So my questions are (and with seeing a link to macro's above, I wouldn't be surprised if www.about.com has the answers now, I used to learn alot from that site before brain/body damaged and I find Microsofts help links to hard to get through in Word, and often online -- and read), ok I just did a quick look on www.about.com, and don't see anything, often I can't read for long or sit up, and smaller print even with glasses is difficult, sometimes, I can't take a sentance in cogitively regardless.
1) How do you merge a letter with a list of addresses (as well as putting in codes for certain lines to change topic, interest ect.) in Word 2003, so codes for the letter and the corresponding addresses/interests, etc...
2) For the not so older Word documents I did do and Word 2003 isn't recognizing them, those squares come up, is there a way to retrieve them and convert to Word 2003. I didn't want 2003, was told had to get it with this computer, even thou I own 2 copies of older versions of Word ( 1 XP, 1 ME), and was taken for a financial ride on that one, as I had to purchase other programs with it I haven't used either.
Simple as possible please, 12pt font, and any help appreciated and grateful. I will be tracking and sometimes it takes me a bit to get back due to situation and condition(s).
