President Barack Obama’s four vacations to Hawaii since becoming president may cost taxpayers “in excess of $20 million, and possibly much, much more,’’ the White House Dossier reports.
A breakdown by the Hawaii Reporter shows his trips in 2009, 2010, and 2011 cost about $4 million, much of it for Air Force One. But that doesn’t include costs like flying in advance teams and separate flights Michelle Obama twice took.
When Obama returned from Hawaii to work on the fiscal cliff deal last week and then jetted back to Honolulu, the second roundtrip flight added about $3.24 million to the tab, bringing the 2012-2013 vacation to over $7 million, the Reporter said.
Urgent: Will Raising Taxes Help or Hurt America?
“If we assume the estimates are probably quite low, then it’s likely to the bill for the combined vacations is more than $20 million,’’ said the Dossier’s Keith Koffler.
“Given that much of the cost involves transporting the First Family and its retinue, the Obamas could have saved taxpayers millions by doing what the vast majority of Americans do: taking either one trip a year, or none.’’
Koffler said while some argued the president is justified in returning to Hawaii because that is where he was born and grew up, “how many of us get to go visit our roots for a two week vacation every year?
“The Obamas probably also feel they must go to Hawaii because they are creatures of habit . . . But their allegiance to routine is costing the taxpayers – including those in the middle class Obama claims to care so much about – millions of dollars.’’
I have worked for bosses that were of both mind sets. In most cases they believed that what was good for the employees was good for them, too. If we didn't get a raise for some reason, they took no pay increase either. If they could not give raises then they cut back on their spending, too. There were the few that lived high on the hog and would not offer benefits or raises and then were so quick to take their families on very expensive vacations or to spend a lot of money on themselves. Where it was their business and their money, you really could not say much; it caused some resentment, but everyone realized it was their right.
However, Obama is a government employee and responsible to the people of this Country that elected him regardless of his opinion. The majority of the presidents we have had have been very responsible in such things as their vacations, taking limited vacations to one or two a year if you consider Christmas break. They normally would go to Camp David or their own homes, i.e., JFK would go to the Cape, GWB would go to the ranch in Texas, Eisenhower would normally go to Camp David. If they needed to get out of Washington DC for a short period, it was Camp David. This is the first president that shows absolutely no regard for the taxpayers that pay his salary nor his boss, the American citizens. What I don't understand is why does Congress condone this? Why is it allowed? He is not an elected resident of Hawaii, he was elected from Illinois, so why does he not go home to Chicago as most presidents would return to their home for vacations?
But I guess the real answer is "because he does what he wants as he can".
This is the stuff that really burns and turns people off. We have him for another 4 more years and you would think that he would realize he did not get in with a landslide and many Americans are upset and hurting. Why don't they get it? These are reasons why people will never warm up to him.
The 'creature" part of the "creature of habit" sure fits. The Creature from the Red Ideological Morass fits quite well.
