What is left to say about China? I am just bereft of expletives.
the abuse of these now dead elephants should spur legislation on an international level to keep this from ever happening again....I hate to sound racist, but there are too many horrible infractions made by China,a place I used to think was full of ancient and wise practices and people.
Turns out that it's just a lack of caring for animals the way that we do.
Their death, and sometimes subsequent becoming a meal attests to their attitudes toward animals...to them animals are just dumb unfeeling food made for them to manipulate in any way that pleases them...narrowminded and indeed selfishly heartless.

URGENT ACTION NEEDED: Help Keep Wild Elephant Calves Out of Chinese Zoos
Jill- 13 hours ago - animalsasia.org
Like everyone else I am heart broken to hear these sad events are unfolding.
As a New Zealand citizen I would like to voice my disapproval of the recent sale of four juvenile elephants from Zimbabwe to China. I include a link outlining the story of four African elephants arriving in China around the end of November last year. Two went to Taiyuan Zoo in the Xinghualing District, one of which has subsequently died. The other two reportedly went to Xinjiang Tianshan Safari Park in Xinjiang. The standards of animal care at these institutions are far from satisfactory with facilities unable to provide adequate veterinarian care, housing & companionship.
I am further saddened and disgusted that these elephants have been removed from their mothers and the African bush to live alone in a cold unfriendly jail cell in a foreign country. With temperature at the Xinjiang Tianshan Safari Park plummeting to less than 20 degrees celsius below zero. It has been suggested these elephants are highly unlikely to survive the cold when they have been accustomed to temperatures of between 30 and 40 degrees.
Therefore, I am writing to you today to request that the New Zealand Consulate intervene in these matter & do all it can to help these elephants and ensure any further live elephant trades between these two countries be stopped.
Sent the 4 emails.

No Export of Elephants From Zimbabwe in Chinese Zoos ! PLEASE SIGN ! !
Cher- 2 hours ago - prowildlife.de
Torn cruelly from the wild, their mothers and their family herd, four juvenile elephants were flown from Zimbabwe, halfway round the world, to zoos in China, last November.
One elephant has already died after the forced relocation. The others are in serious distress, being kept in solitude, in freezing concrete cages.
One of our volunteers shot footage of the elephants in Taiyuan zoo, and witnessed appalling scenes - the youngest baby elephant has a very bad skin condition and desperately tries to find relief by scratching against the bars of its cage.
It is displaying stereotypic distress behaviour, walking in circles and crying constantly.
ACTAsia has learnt that 14 more baby elephants are due to be sent to Mainland China. To make matters worse, Taiyuan Zoo has planned an animal show on the 1st of May, and the baby elephants will probably be included in that show......
ACTAsia is working together with China Zoo Watch and Zoocheck Canada to address this issue.
- We have sent a joint statement to the authorities of Zimbabwe to express our concerns on the illegal wildlife trade and the welfare of the elephants in Chinese zoos.
- We are asking the Chinese public to contact relevant CITES authorities and ministries in China to request immediate aid for these baby elephants, as well as stopping the import of even more wild elephants into the country.
- We are also offering veterinary assistance for the treatment of the baby elephant in Taiyuan zoo.
This sad incident is a vivid example for the Chinese public, to raise awareness of the welfare needs of wild animals kept in concrete enclosures and to learn the truth concerning the inhumane treatment of animals for entertainment.
Signed all. Thank you.
