fruit bats shouldn't be kept as pets! February 07, 2006 9:28 PM

Bats are difficult to keep alive and healthy in captivity and the food, handling, and housing requirements vary considerably depending on the species. Most exotic fruit bats are very gregarious animals, and it would be cruel to isolate a bat off by itself, away from others of its own kind. Because the fruit bats are so much larger than our tiny native US bats, they also need much larger cages to house them comfortably. Bat World Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Center has a good page addressing the problems facing bats in the pet trade, and they STRONGLY discourage anyone from keeping these bats as pets. Many of their rescued bats were turned in by owners when the bats were on the verge of death. http://www.batworld.org/main/bats_pets.html If you want to help bats, maybe you could volunteer as a bat rehabilitaor. Sadly, many wildlife rehabilitators won't work with bats, or don't have the information available to provide good care for rehab and release. Bat World moderates a bat rehabilitators' newsgroup for folks of all levels of experience from around the country and other parts of the world, and they teach a weeklong workshop in bat care and rescue each summer. They published a wonderful book on the subject, called "Captive Care and Medical Reference for the Rehabilitation of Insectivorous Bats," which you can see here: http://www.batworld.org/rehab_training/rehab_training.html cindy m. www.BatRescue.org www.BatWorld.org  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
