Burr Nelly Isler May 05, 2006 7:47 AM

I have an orchid (Burr Nelly Isler is what its tag says) that my husband bought me (from the grocery store--I'm not exactly an orchid collector!) It bloomed and was lovely. That was several months ago. Once a week, I soak the pot in water and use an orchid fertilizer. It hasn't grown or bloomed in months. However, it hasn't died either. No changes. How can I get it to bloom again? Am I caring for it correctly?  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Well i see no one has replied so I will although I am no expert. What you have is a militonia cross,a nice orchid ro start with. I looked it up on search (burr nelly Isler orchid). Most of the orchids you get from the store are not potted well. Poor potting media. I pot this type in medium fir bark. I soak mine also once a week for a hour. The ferterlizers that have "orchid' or "orchid bloom" on the labels are not all that good for the plants. Peters 10-10-10 is very good for a start. I ferterlize weakly, weekly. Medium to bright light. The two most comman errors people make with orchids is overwatering and ferterlizing. Many plants bloom only once a year and may have some adjustment problems. There is a mental illnes you can get from these plants,it is a obssessive-complusion illness. One thinks about orchids all the time, and one has to continuely buy more plants(I have 100 plants on my window sill ,and looking for more room). The things I have learned from orchids are patiencte (i have had plants for 5-6 years before blooming) Also that if a leaf dies it is not a disaster, and if a plants dies you are not really a bad person. you should join the local orchid club (try orchid for location) Feel free to contact me at DM  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
