Just Another Day August 11, 2005 1:50 PM

Just Another Day

(For Shawna)
by Skip Shea August 11 2005

August 11th
is just another day
on this plane
in this moment
under the sun
and weight of Heaven

August 11th has
a million anniversaries
remembered or forgotten
beginning and ending
and yet to be conceived

August 11th, 1909
Arapahoe was the first American ship to
send SOS

August 11th, 1978
the Rolling Stones topped the charts with
Miss You

Like any other day
a raindrop falls
a flower opens
a star collapses

The present is all beginnings
and endings
doing the simultaneous dance
at the masquerade ball
of time

Like August sixth's bomb
for Japan or
April 30th's bullet for Hitler's brain
Both ending WWII

Like October 7th for
poets and April 5th
for elite academic critics
who still bought Ginsberg's papers

Like June 19th and
December 8th for
Yoko

Like May 2nd and
August 11th for me

It marks how many times
I've circled the sun since
memories

...of joy
...of sorrow

married to guilt and rage

One cycle around the sun
An arbitrary
human scale
defines history and
seasons

Defines futures for children
and pasts for the rest

Under normal circumstances

My August 11th Anniversary
is not normal, yet
tragedy is as normal as
a snowstorm
a rainstorm
the soul's storm
as is night
on a street
without a visible stop sign

On every August 11th
as I spin madly around the sun
I will mark that moment
sending an SOS and singing
Miss You

Beautiful August 13, 2005 7:36 AM

Marvelous poem.  For me it is August 16, a day that happens each year but will never be the same.  This will mark 12 years, and I till vividly recall the major events of that day like they were yesterday.  As was so beautifully expressed in a song by the vocal group Rockapella, "I'll hear your voice in every thought that goes through my mind...I'll see your face in every cloud that floats through my sky...and when the world is too much and has gotten me down on my knees to pray, I'll hear your voice and you won't seem so far away."  [ send green star]

Skip, I thought this was beautiful... August 13, 2005 8:13 AM

Skip, I thought this was beautiful...I am glad to see that you chose to post your poem here. There is just something about poetry written from the core of sorrow that makes it unspeakably beautiful, truthful and honest.

Tim, the lyrics you shared are wonderful and I am grateful to have met all of you online.  You all give me hope in a strangely, evolving world. For that I am most grateful---peace, ginger

THANK YOU!!! August 14, 2005 4:36 AM

My dear friends,

I simply want to confirm that I fully agree with what Ginger said...  I'm thankful we all met on line and created such a strong bond!  However, as we well know, nothing happens by chance!

Skip, you wrote that poem with all your heart, and I can feel your profound love and sadness...  Tim added some beautiful comments, and I can only pray for all of us...  That one day we'll all be with our deceased loved ones again.

Blessings,

Giuliana aka Princess Little Rock

Giuliana I pray right along with you on that request... August 14, 2005 10:06 AM

Giuliana, I pray right along with you on that request...Yes, due to all of our individual set of circumstances have we been drawn to one another and for that I am grateful although a few years ago I might not have expressed that same sentiment when deeply embedded in my sorrow walk. peace & blessings---ginger  [ send green star]

Skip your poetry goes right to the heart, sad but strangly comforting.  June 15th is my anniversary.  I remember those first few months following Rudy's death I was on the internet reading poetry from other people who had lost someone, sometimes the tears were flowing so hard I couldn't read, but they were comforting as nothing else seemed to be.  Thank you Skip and Tim for your wonderful words.  [ send green star]
