Plug-in hybrids + solar on your roof no equipment to buy April 05, 2007 1:05 PM

Hi everyone, I'm new today, so forgive me if this has been covered previously, but I saw no mention of plug-in hybrids on your site. They could indeed be a revolution in our energy picture because of the fact that approximately 80% of all driving is less than 50 miles per day. Gasoline engines wouldn't even turn on except perhaps twice a month where I live. If we could DROP our oil consumption 80%, intuitively at least that would offset A LOT of new cars and Hymotion conversions. Combine plug-in hybrids with a new solar company that will put solar panels on your roof no investment required [rent them for just the electricity they produce, at same rate paying now, locked in for up to 25 years], and the USA would indeed be on the way to a significant change in the energy/environment/economic equation. Check it out at Prototypes of the hybrids already exist, including the GM Volt, as well as conversion kits a la Hymotion. Check out and I saw the reference to Matt Savinar, and am familiar with him via his presentation on Peak Oil on the Coast to Coast radio show. I need to read his comments re/ net energy loss of a mass conversion. Does he deal with the PLUG-IN hybrid option? An 80% reduction in oil for transportation piggy-backed with solar on every roof and we have a revolution. Dale  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
Yep read the LATOC site in full April 05, 2007 2:38 PM

The idea is good but it is gonna take so much effort and resources to replace our current fleet of cars and trucks that I think $100 oil will come too fast for that to happen smootly. A revolution would be a non car dependant society, which no one wants to even fatholm it seems. Anything to keep the sprawl expamding or as Bush said "Americas non negotiable way of life". Batteries and solar panels also need to be produced using energy and other finite resources. The only machines available to build these things and mine the base metals etc rely completely on oil. As oil creeps up we will find inflation will rise, crippling the economy as the media avoids the true supply / demand situation and ignorance wins over logic. As the future rolls on a diminishing percenatage of society will even be able to afford to live this way and will start to get upset that they can't really cope with the costs of everything. That is without a series of big oil shocks and if world production eased back gradually and does not fall of the "hubberts peak" cliff as the top geologists are claiming it will.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
