Joanne, do you mean how to incorporate smiles into your posts like this:

If so, most groups allow you to choose from a smiles menu which is at the top right of the toolbar. Then you type in the code that is next to the smile you want. For example, the group hug code is (I'm adding spaces so you can see the code):

* grouphug *

Of course you would put it all together to make it show up.

If this isn't what you meant, sorry for blathering. Perhaps it will help someone else down the road.

Hi March 10, 2005 5:27 PM

just joined. I have a question - how do you put smileys into your care2 email? Can you do that at all? And can you paste pics? I tried but the smileys didn't work. Don't know if care2 mail has these features. Thanks. Kathy  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 March 10, 2005 5:47 PM

spaces aren't necessary to display, if you know the "code" for, lets say, the asterisk

Using the basic editor I should be able to display it correctly:

*gee* =

As far as I know, there is no way to send smilies in e-mail or network messaging.  It seems like they are only usable in the discussion groups.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 March 10, 2005 6:16 PM

You're correct, even with the graphics editor the do not provide for the smilies, but they do provide basic HTML support (so it says, I have never tried it) and so pics and graphics that have a URL can be placed in the email (be sure to click the graphics editor button before you start typing);  One would use   <img src="http://TheUrlOfTheImageHere.jpg"> Mike K.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi tThere. March 10, 2005 7:08 PM

If your talking about posts, Then just click the smiley face on the right. If a box doesn't come up then check your popup blockers and click allow popups. You don't have to worry that you'll be bombarded with popups, As it will only allow that popup window and no others. As the other's have said you can only do it posts. If, However, You want to put one in from your own personal collection of pics or funny faces, Then start your post and when you get to the part where you want to start adding your emoticons or pics, Click on File at the top left hand corner slide over to new window and open up a replica window. Your original post is now protected, So you can go anywhere now where you have pictures stored in Cyber. When you find what your looking for right click it and ciick copyin the drop down menu, Then  minimise the window and return to your post and click on the paste icon and whalaa. If you want to post more pics your extra window can be just clicked up at random, If not you can just close it.I keep a lot of my stuff in Cyber, Like MSN, Yahoo, Care2 etc, And I have them all bookmarked so that they are really quick to find.I know you probabley didn't ask for such a tutorial, But I couldn't help it, There were so many things I struggled with at the beginning of My Care2 experience and I would Post How to's everywhere and never get an answer back

what do you use to open pics (as far as you know) ?

are you short on resources ?

what browser are you using ?

Problem solved March 30, 2005 10:30 AM

 Mike,
Thanks so much for offering to help me. Your questions promoted me to discuss this with a friend who is also a computer pro. He suggested that the problem was probably NOT related to Care 2, but simply that I needed to upgrade my browser (Mozillza) which he had recommended to me a while back, but forgot to tell me about upgrades. (upgrade is automatic in this latest version) So I did upgrade and the problem is solved! How delightful to see everyone and their photo's.
Thanks again and thank you Raven for responding, even if you couldn't offer advise.

I hope this hasn't been posted before... April 27, 2005 7:29 PM

occasionally, for some unknown reason, copying a picture in doesn't work.  When it fails one can always "tag" it in with html tags (make sure one has Basic Editor open), use the following code:
<img src="http://www.thePathTo/YourPic.jpg">

with the url of the path to the pic (published online somewhere) in between the quotes.

Help, needed, inserting photos to "my page billboard"! February 23, 2006 9:39 AM

HI!!Dear wise computer wizards!! Didnt find anyone here before asking the same, so calling for help! I`m quite helplessly new to computers and computer talk, trying to explain this as clearly as possible..

Trying to "insert image"on "my page billboard"I can write and insert emoticons there OK.)I opened the insert image window on editing page billboard. I wrote there the URL of the picture I had before imported to care2album or photobucket.Didnt write anything on the "image description "box, then wrote the dimensions, and nothing on the "vertical" and "horicontal "boxes, as didnt know what they meant..pressed insert:

On the editing table appears an empty box I can move and resize, but no picture!!Pressed "prewiew",and the empty box appears on the billboard. I did  NOT dare to press SAVE though, cause afraid the empty box might appear as saved, and I might have trouble erasing it.. I Tought maybe the image only appeares after saving??? There also appears a little cross or image on the upper left corner of these empty boxes, but nothing happens if I click it..

Thankyou so much for your trouble!! Mia

Hi Mia February 23, 2006 5:52 PM

You wrote: I wrote there the URL of the picture I had before imported to care2album or photobucket

And I am not sure I understand.  If you mean the URL of the pic on your own hd before you uploaded them, that won't work.  If it is the URL of the Photobucket img, it has to be "just" the URL.  There is (at least in mine) a lot of other "stuff" that would not allow the picture to actually load.

[ send green star]  [ accepted]

Thanks so much! February 24, 2006 8:09 AM

Thankyou One Love and Ole Grey Mike..Well I`m still not sure what the trouble was, because I tried inserting them same pictures again, the URL I wrote was the one That had appeared on them after I have uploaded them to a care2 album or photobucket, starting http://dingo.care2 etc,or the one that says photobucket..Tried putting the URlL inside what One Love advised.Still no photo! But then as my friend Laurie had told me to insert photos from her album, I tried one,and  it opened!!!! Happy, not so frustrated at least!

So the trouble seems to be with my photos,or maybe their URL does have some extra stuff written on them due to first upploading them from my harddrive,I just dont know what!?

I guess I`ll get acquinted with the photbucket system better now and see if theres nice available photos for people to share, and they might open,or even try other photos of mine..

Things look more promising now! Thanks again!!Mia

 February 24, 2006 8:19 AM

"URL of the picture"... In Care2 album you have to right-click on the image (this is when you open the actual picture... not the thumbnail) then go to "properties", a little window/menu will pop up that says something like "element properties", on the list of things under it you will see "location:  http....", that is the URL you copy.... as opposed to the URL of the page that is in the address bar

Just clarifing un case this is the problem for anyone, not just you

Tips for XP and Firefox users: July 28, 2006 1:59 PM

With XP operating system it seems the OK or Insert button in the Insert Graphics box is covered up. You can use the Tab key to navigate down to the OK box after your url is entered.

In the Mozilla Firefox browser it seems the 'paste' option isn't available in the right click menu in the posting box. For Copy and Paste, use the key strokes Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v.

Also, to avoid the dreaded 'lost post' if the site or my computer chokes, or i goof, I use the following precaution: When I am finished my post, but before I hit 'preview', I press Ctrl+a [curser must be inside post] to select my whole post, then press Ctrl+c to copy it. Thus I have a temporary saved version just in case, or if I want to put it somewhere else, like my harddrive. Then If I need to recover it I use Ctrl+v to insert it in the posting box. Also, Ctrl+x deletes whatever is selected.

For copying from my albums i open an extra window and go to my album and find the fullsized pic. Then resize that window to a long vertical box. when I have the post ready for the insert, I bring the smaller window to the front and drag'n drop the pic.
For emoticons i just drag and drop.

Remember that there are some situations where copy and pasting pics is considered stealing - see the 'Inserting graphics...' thread here.

Peace, Teilflock

Tool bar August 26, 2006 4:33 PM

Now I feel silly I was going to ask you where was the toolbar to get these smiles etc ... and there it was ...

Also, I would like to know if this is the only way that people communicate with each other ... via emails.

Are there are there any actual chat rooms were members can converse.

Thanks

Katie

[ send green star]  [ accepted]

 August 27, 2006 1:27 AM

Hello Katie! I'm glad you found the smilie guys
There are three ways people communicate here:
  1. In the discussion threads of groups
  2. personal messaging - through the My Connect page
  3. Email - this is less common, as many folks protect their privacy by not sharing email addys
As far as I know, requests have been made to the Care2 engineers to add chat applets to groups, but I have not heard of any action on that idea. There are some groups that are active enough that communication has very little delay, but that is not the norm.

Peace, Hope and Welcome

Question about additions November 29, 2006 2:13 AM

Ok, looks like I have the right thread to ask this question (I think) & ya'll seem to be pretty good at answering all the questions put to you. But here's a horse of a different color. I have 2 types of business that I'd like to highlight here on my personal professional page. I have 1 of them there already. Is there some way that I can add another section for another professional contact? I want to put another website address for my second business & I'm not sure how to do that. IS there a way to do that & if so, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help, Pat.

SEE I DID read what you guys wrote because I've never done that before!

No way to add an additional section, that I know of but perhaps seperating them with comas? Or maybe just adding it to your billboard?

If I think of something else I'll let you know

[ send green star]  [ accepted]

 November 29, 2006 12:43 PM

Hi, Pat! I'll give this a go!

In the professional section of your profile, you can list more than one profession, however, it doesn't create a seperate section for each one [would be kinda neat if it did!]. Listing them here, tho, is how others will find you if they are searching for Holisitc Health tips, or a Massage therapist. The more information you put in these sections, the easier it is for people to find you, for better or worse.

I think what you want to do is to design your Billboard to highlight the two professions. This is right below the area with your profile pic; a narrow band should say 'My Billboard' and at the end 'Edit'. Click edit and a box will open up down the page, much like for posting in threads. You will find much useful information in the thread about 'Posting graphics or pictures in Posts'.

One very useful tip that is often over-looked applies to posting links to other webpages. Have the other website open in a different window or tab, and copy the URL in the address bar [Right click and select copy, or just hold Ctrl and press 'c']. Go to your Profile page and when the edit box is open, type the name of the website you want to link to. Put in extra lines before and after the name for easier formatting. Highlight the name of the website and go up to the little menu bar of the edit box - click the little chainlinks. It opens a small box with a space for the URL. Paste the URL into the space and click ok. Voila! The name of your website is now what is called a Hotlink. My link above to another thread here in 'New to Care2?' is an example.

I hope this helps. Keep the questions coming!

Peace, Teilflock

Profile Editing January 13, 2007 12:10 PM

I can't put any extra info on my profile page for it to save and I never have had any response about it from support. It really bothers me. Am I doing something wrong? I try saving and all the info disappears.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 January 14, 2007 12:10 AM

Hi Karen,
I'm not sure why you would be unable to edit your profile. What area are you working with, and what happens? Error messages, blank white page ....? More specific information is needed to try to track down the problem.

Peace, Teilflock

[ send green star]  [ accepted]

Thank you January 14, 2007 1:03 PM

Ok, well, I put the info in there, write the quotes I like and such, and I set the "eye" for how many people I want to view it. Then I hit the save button. The page changes, reloads to the original empty form--all the info I put is gone (except the most basic). There aren't any error messages and the info never makes it to my profile page. It seems it just doesn't save.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Another question... January 14, 2007 1:07 PM

Sometimes my little profile photo to the side of the discussions is the full picture and other times it's cut in half. I'm wondering what makes that happen and if it can be changed. Thank you, Karen  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 January 15, 2007 1:39 AM

Hi Karen,
I can only think of two reasons why this might be happening. One: there could be a code error associated with your profile page, in which case only C2 engineers could fix it. Two: Security settings. Have you changed your security programs or settings since you made the last successful changes to your profile? Unfortunately, I don't know enough to advise you about such programs. I'm not even sure if a security program can actually prevent you from completing forms on line. But it may be a side effect of a clash between your security, and c2's code for updating forms.
I know you said you haven't had a response from C2 support, but I can only suggest that you try to follow up with them on this. Check out "
Tips on using the Help Request Form" for more info. It may help to include in your reply a link to the page where you have attempted to save changes and they have not been accepted. The more specific info you supply to them, the better the chance of a solution being found.

About your profile picture [AKA avatar]; Avatars must be square in order to be seen correctly when posting. Although you can see them in other shapes on your profile,
in the threads, the space for avatars is a standardised square [60x60 pixils].  Unless the copyright on an image is your own, it isn't legal to crop it for use as an avatar, yet it might be possible shrink it until it is 60px tall. However, it would then be very small, and not very clear. Generally it is easier to make a square image from your own pictures.

I hope this helps.

Peace, Teilflock

 January 16, 2007 11:36 AM

I'm glad to help, Karen! Please remember to use Reply from the email with your ticket number to provide future info to C2 support - you want one long conversation with them on one topic, not several incomplete ones.

As for the spelling - no worries - I trip over the spelling too! If I didn't use the Preview button, half my posts would be unreadable! I hope you find an image you love that also works well here!

Posting a Picture as a insert in text. February 05, 2007 1:57 PM

pics February 06, 2007 5:52 AM

To put a pic in a message, first you have to have the code. Where do you get it. If you don't know html your best bet is to go someplace like photobucket or myspace, or vids youtube. Photobucket lets u upload your pics or grab someone elses. you just click on html tag and it copys to clipboard. but when you get back to C2 it gets a little tricky. You have to click on the basic editor button, right click and paste the code. Sometimes when I switch back to text mode though the pic and code dissapear. What I do is Paste the code, click on preview to make sure its there, click edit, text mode, and then put the text where I want. I hope this helps.

Hi Janice,
There is a thread here "
Posting graphics or pictures in posts" describing a few methods for adding pictures to posts. Have you tried them already? If you are having difficulty with any of the methods, please post specific info about the problem: which method are you using, where does it stop working, what does it look like....etc. Then we can help with specifics. You can post in that thread, or start a new one.

Hi Teilflock, February 08, 2007 4:00 PM

Thanks for your help before. I am wondering now about how to apply links on my page to websites without the editor. More specifically, my own browser is out of date enough that the URL editor doesn't show up. I can only type the text. The computer I use at the library does have that, but, unfortunately, everything on that section of my page seems to "magically" lose its centering, which got too annoying to do editing on that computer. Am I still able to provide links somehow? Karen  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Editing my page February 25, 2007 6:00 AM

I was wondering if you could answer this question please?

I can figure out how to edit the freeform boxes on My Page, that's no problem but is it possible to edit the sections that form lists such as:

Music/Movies/TV shows etc.

As far as I can tell, once you have entered an item on the list it remains on the page forever and there are some that I would now like to take off, is this possible?

Editing Profile 'Lists' February 25, 2007 12:41 PM

Hi Rachel,
There are two ways to access the lists on your profile to edit them.

On the My Page view:
Each of the lists should have the linked word 'Edit' at the end. Click this and it will open a new page. You can select from the most common answers in the window to the right, or type in the box and click Add. To remove items, click the little red X to the left of the item. Remember that the first items entered will be at the end of your list on your profile.

Edit Profile view:
At the top of your Profile page is a link 'Edit Profile', which will open a page with several tabbed pages of info [can also be reached from midway down the page 'Edit your personal information' link].
Tabs [orange]:
Basics, Contact Info, Personal, Professional, Singles, Photos, Notifications
- explore each page and you will find all the places to edit your lists, info and settings.

[Note: when adding to your Lists, the Save and Cancel buttons may become hidden. If this happens, use your Tab key to move down the list and you will find the Save button.]

Peace, Teilflock

As always the things that puzzle most have the simplest answers, I have been trying to figure that out for months.

Thanks for replying Teilflock

Hi Ginny,
Sorry to be so long, but I was away a couple days. I suggest you check out this thread "
Making Friends" about the various views on Friends and 'Friend lists'. As for the petitions, I don't know much about them, but I do know that lots of people are very serious about them, and do everything they can to make it happen.

Can anyone tell me how to make the Recent Contributions section appear underneath friends and above the video section? I see it on other members' page sites but don't have it on mine.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Recent Contributions August 15, 2007 1:56 PM

Okay, I'm a bonehead. I have the recent contributions section. but can't figure out how to place a poem there for people to make comments upon. Is there a way to do that?  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi Vicki,
I'm sorry I missed your first question on this. The Recent Contributions section is just a summary of your activity around the site. As you discovered, when you start participating, such as at C2NN, it is reflected there.
To have something like a poem appear there, you would need to publish it in a Share. Like the C2NN entries, only a link to your most recent Share will be shown. In the My Care2 drop-down list, select "my share network". Then you can select 'Create a share' and follow the directions. You could write it as a Blog or Net Message. You can set visibility to private, public, friends or friends network.
Also, If you upload photos from your computer to your C2 Albums, a
random sample will be displayed on your Profile page at the bottom of the Recent Contributions section [unless the album is locked].
I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes

Peace, Teilflock

Hi Sustainable,
I'm not sure how it works anymore - access to albums has changed so much. The first problem is usually whether they can actually get to the albums page. If they've gotten that far, what problem do they encounter? Has anyone else been able to access a locked album? If so, maybe ask them to describe the process in detail, and share that with the new person.

I would also appreciate it if you would share your solution with us. Please?

Peace, Teilflock

Hi Molly,
I think you are supposed to use the page address, rather than the link or code they provide. here is a short instruction from C2 Support:
"If you wish to edit a video on your page, please log into your account and then go to your My Page. Once there you will be able to use the Edit link in the video box to change the video or add a new one. To avoid encountering problems when loading new videos, please be sure that you are not trying to add a playlist, are entering the page address listed at the top of the page(not the one that is provided by them to share the video) and are only using videos from youtube (or other sites accepted by Care2).
If you continue to experience problems adding a new video to your page please send us the link to the video that you are trying to add, along with the browser and version of it that you are using.
Thank you,
Michon

"

I hope this helps!

Hosting - Invite Etiquette August 25, 2008 3:41 AM

Hi I am new to Hosting and have a lot to learn. My first question is about inviting people to join a group. Are you allowed to invite members who are members of another group that is similar to the one you are starting? There are differences with the group I am starting. It covers a more diverse group and delves deeper into the cause and effects, but it does also cover a lot of the same issues. I don't want to seem as if I am trying to take away from a group that is already established. What is the protocol for sending invitations to the care2 community? What should I be concerned with so I don’t step on any toes? Thanks for you assistance. A

Adding youtube videos August 25, 2008 3:58 AM

Hello it's me again!

/>

I would like to add some you tube videos to my group page and I do not understand how to do that. There are several different codes for different purposes so it is confusing to me. Care2 is not one of the choices on the, you tube button list, so I am not sure what to do. Can you help me with this? Secondly is there anything I need to know about putting them on my group page I don't want to violate anything? Thanks again, I'm sure I will have more questions later. A

Hello Amy,
Here is a thread in this group: creating your own groups
In there you will also find a link to a group for Group Hosts that may be very helpful to you.

Have you spoken to that Group's Hosts about whether they might be willing to incorporate your ideas into their group? It may not be necessary to start a new group. Or perhaps each group may specialize in different areas, and agree to refer members to each other's groups. If neither option is viable, they may still allow you to add a general invitation to the discussion list.

If you visit a profile, and find that a person has listed your topic as one of their interests, you are probably welcome to invite them to your group. If you click on the topic/interest/cause on a profile, a new page will open listing everyone who has that word on their profile.
Also, as you participate in other groups you may see someone who you believe may be interested - go to their profile and invite them. I suggest you write a description of your group in the invite, and if applicable, why you think this person might like your group. Remember that people often join more groups than they can actually handle, time-wise, and need a good reason to consider joining another.

To increase the visibility of your group you can also write a Share [Blog, Network Message, etc] about your group and make it available to all Care2 members. You can use that share to start discussions in appropriate groups, or add it to the C2NN as an article.

As for adding videos to group billboards, I am not sure how/if that is done. I will check into it. As for concerns about doing this, you should realize that some videos [or even pictures] can contain malicious code that can damage your page or create an opportunity for Malware to be distributed.
Here are instructions for adding video to Posts in threads:
"
Question: Posting Videos in Discussion Groups"
