I have been an unorganized cluttered person my entire life. I am ready to change! But I need help. How does one go about hiring a professional organizer? Is there an organization that I can check so I know I am getting a good person? How much do they usually charge?
I would like to hear the answer to this also as I had a horrid experience June 01, 2005 8:22 AM
before I moved, I hired a woman to help "declutter" and pack for me ... it was a nightmare as all that she packed broke in the move and insurance would not cover it.
I do not feel organized at all; in fact I am in worse shape as I physically crashed after the move and none of the boxes are properly labled
The best way to find an organizer in your area to meet your needs is to go to www.napo.net -- The National Association of Professional Organizers. Click on the FIND AN ORGANIZER link and you'll fill out a short form of the area and type of organizing / skills you're looking for.
Most of the organizers in NAPO are very good -- and you can check their references, see how long they have been in business, and other info about them.
The professional fees range anywhere from $40/hr to $150/hr. The average is $50/hr.
Watch for organizers charging less, as they are very new and probably not skilled enough or confident enough in their work to charge professional rates yet. You get what you pay for, as they say.
The organizer who didn't pack things well enough for moving was probably inexperienced, I'd say.
