Now with respect to Labradoodles...

Would you like to see a pic of one bounding toward you, midair?

There you go.

Or maybe you're more into the type thing where a younger, lighter Labradoodle is posed up on a rock front paws only.

Laradoodle is not yet a breed. It's still being highly exploited in the USA and as far as I am aware only Austrailia is taking responsible steps to see it become a breed. People in the USA are riding the fad and only in it for money. that is not to say there isn't some repsonsible people here also working with getting it into a breed but they are very few and far between.

I really hope they get a more dignafied name when they do create the breed.

And be aware that the site dogbreedinfo.com isn't very repituble with the breeder listings. Although the site has tons of info and some good info on the dogs they list mutts and advertise the breeders for money. It does have some very good breed information though.

Hybrid Dog Breeds August 16, 2005 8:01 PM

Yes, None of those "doodle" or "poo" breeds are pure breeds. They are hybrids. (Two breeds)

For Example:

Cockapoo: A Cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Cockapoos have been recognized by the American people as a very special cross since about 1960; they have been purposely breed since the 1950's.

Goldendoodle: Goldendoodles are a hybrid dog produced by breeding a Golden Retriever with a Poodle.

Labradoodle: Labradoodles are a hybrid dog produced by breeding a Labrador Retriever with a Standard or Miniature Poodle.

Maltipoo: Cross between a Maltese and a Toy Poodle.

Wolf Hybrid Dog: There are a number of sub-species of wolves which are selectively bred with other dog breeds as pets, including Arctic Tundra Wolves, Alaskan Interior Wolves, British Columbian Timber Wolves, and Eastern Timber Wolves.

Chinese Crested August 16, 2005 8:50 PM

Chinese Crested

Despite it's name, the small, hairless and coated dogs known as Chinese Cresteds are actually thought to have originated in Africa, and have existed for many centuries in Central and South America and the West Indies. Once the cherished pets of Chinese Mandarins, these small, elegant little dogs were given the name "Chinese Crested Dogs" because of that association. Chinese Crested Dogs are a toy breed, measuring from 9 to 13 inches, and weighing under 12 pounds. There are two variations in coat; hairless skin or powderpuff (both can be born in the same litter) which come in a wide variety of  colors or color combinations. Hairless Chinese Crested Dogs have a very distinctive crest of hair or mane that grows from the top of it's head and the back of it's neck, a plume of hair flowing from the tail, and unique tufts of hair on it's feet. These dogs require special care as they are susceptible to dry skin, sunburn and even acne. The powder puff variety has a short undercoat covered by a soft, straight veil of long hair. Chinese Crested Dogs are happy, alert and agile dogs that make wonderful companions. They are very clean and have very little odor. Chinese Crested Dogs are best suited to city or suburban life, and thrive on plenty of love and attention. Exercise needs are moderate. Extra care must be taken when out for a walk to protect this dog from extremes of hot or cold weather.

(Bichon Havanais)
(Havana Silk Dog)

Havanese Puppy Dogs
Quito at 1 year. Just working on his adult coat coming in
He now has a Championship Title!
Photos Courtesy of MistyTrails Havanese

The Havanese is a sturdy dog measuring 8.5-11.5 inches tall and, although the standard does not specify weight, he weighs seven to 13 pounds. He is a bit longer than tall, has drop ears, a broad skull, and flat cheeks.

His body has rounded ribs, a straight topline rising slightly over the rump, and a tail that rides over the back. His jaunty gait springs from well-constructed shoulders and legs.

The double coat is the dog's most prominent physical feature. The outer coat can be curly or wavy. Both outer and inner layers of the coat are soft, and the hair is long (six-to-eight inches in mature adults) and profuse. Unlike some other long-coated small dogs, the Havanese is shown in a natural coat - no trimming is allowed except on the feet, and the hair may not be parted down the middle of the back. However, braids are allowed on either side of the head. Unlike the always-white Bichon, the Havanese can be white, cream, champagne, gold, black, blue, silver, or chocolate or a combination of two or three colors.

Dorkie

Dorkie Height : 12-14 inches

Dorkie Weight : 6-15 lbs.

Dorkie Colors : Black / Gold; Red / Black

Country of Origin: United States

Coat: Hair is short, dense, and smooth.

Character: The Dorkie is brave, intelligent and independent.

Temperament: This breed is somewhat reserved around strangers, but forms a strong bond with its family. It can be over-courageous around other dogs.

Care: The Smooth- and Long-haired Dorkie should be brushed occasionally to remove dead hairs. Long-haired Dorkies are prone to tangles, so they should be groomed more often. The coat of the Wire-haired Dorkie should be plucked twice a year.

Training: Long-haired Dorkies are slightly easier to train than Smooth- or Wire-haired Dorkies, however all varieties need firm and consistent training because they have minds of their own.

Activity: The Dorkie needs a fair amount of exercise so long walks are required

Description : The Dorkie is a playful hybrid, crossing a yorkie with a dachshund creates a low profile dog, that is more long then tall. With yorkie colors and a happy disposition. They want to please the masters, they are prone to chew and require alot of toys to keep them busy. The Dorkie also is a digger and will dig if let unattained.

Temperament: Living with other dogs and cats is usually not a problem. Small children may regard the dog as a toy.

Care: Regular grooming with a brush and comb is required. The claws must be kept trimmed, and teeth must be checked frequently for tartar buildup.

Training: Although they are usually not trained because of their small size, Chihichon are eager to learn.

Activity: Chihichon can usually get enough exercise by running around indoors

Toy Poodle August 17, 2005 2:51 AM

Toy Poodle

Other Names : Caniche

Toy Poodle Height : 10 inches or smaller

Toy Poodle Weight : 2 1/2 - 7 lbs.

Toy Poodle Colors : All solid colors; clear colors are generally preferred

* Teacup Size: according to breed standards, all poodles 10 inches and smaller are Toy breed. Some people refer to the very tiny ones as "Teacup", but it is not a separate breed.

Country of Origin: France / Germany

Coat: Fine, frizzy, wooly. Permitted colors are grey, brown, apricot, black, and white. A Poodle with a corded coat is rare.

Character: Poodles are sensitive, intelligent, lively, playful, and eager to learn. They bond closely with their family.

Temperament: This breed gets along well with other animals, other dogs, and children. Visitors will be announced, but they are generally friendly toward them.

Care: The amount of grooming necessary for show dogs should be left to a professional and requires a substantial investment of time and money. Poodles that are not intended for show competitions are usually trimmed with the hair left longer on the head, legs, and ears. Poodles do not shed and can be washed often.

Training: The intelligence of a Poodle makes training a fairly simple process. They quickly learn what is expected of them.

Activity: Toy and Miniature Poodles can live happily in an apartment, but they still need quite a lot of exercise.

Description : Identical to the Standard and Miniature Poodle except in height, these tiny, sensitive little dogs are a perfect pet for a less active person. By nature, it seems, they are little clowns and enjoy to amuse their owners by performing quaint antics. Bright, perky, easy to train and eager to please.

PUGGLES???!!!

Even tough-guy "Soprano" James Gandolfini recently bought one of the black-nosed rascals.

"Everyone is clawing for them, it's ridiculous," said Brian Incovaia of Metro Puppy Kennels in Forest Hills, Queens. "I get people calling left and right for them and basically you get the equivalent of breeding a Marc Jacobs bag with a Louis Vuitton."

Although you all know where ModernPooch stands on buying pedidgree or bred dogs versus adopting from the pound, these guys are so cute! Google Images samples:

Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog February 28, 2006 11:49 AM

Catahoula Leopard Dog

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is derived from the hunting dogs of the 1500's (Greyhounds and Mastiffs) with red wolf and Beauceron combined. The word Catahoula comes from the Indian word for Choctaw, and although the native phonetics were mispronounced by the French, the name stuck.

They are fairly large dogs, males standing at 22-26 inches at the withers, and females 20-24 inches at the withers. They have great muscle tone, yet they are trim and athletic.

They are very confident dogs, and some can have dog aggression, which is a very serious behaviour problem that pet owners must deal with. It is preventable if the owner understands the breed and the factors that influence the development of the aggressive behavior.

The key to the Catahoula is socialization. Knowing the breed and understanding the importance of socialization from the age of 3 weeks of age is best. When the puppy comes into a new home, it should be genlty handled by the family and not harshly diciplined.

Puppies that are raised in kennels where they get very little human handling will often remain shy of people, especially if they are not sold prior to 14 weeks old. They may always be fearful, especially under stressful conditions.

They are very intelligent dogs, as well as very energetic. They need a lot of mental and physical stimulation to keep them happy. They generally don't do very well in urban settings- they're excellent working dogs; herding, hunting, protection and police work. They are usually very protective and territorial of their family and home, and make excellent watch dogs.

They are not a recommended breed for those who do not have experience with large assertive breeds.

Their coat is short to medium in length, and can be any combination of colors, although leopards are predominate.

Both parents should have OFA certificates (hips) and yearly CERF (eyes). Each individual puppy should also come with a BAER printout that shows normal bilateral hearing, as inherited deafness can be a problem.
