The U.S. is the only civilized country on Earth that has NOT signed International Treaty banning land mines that kill and maim thousands of innocent kids, farmers and animals on a daily basis. Urge the US government to ban these terror producing weapons.
http://www.thePetitionSite.com/takeaction/765987351
About a third of all nations in the world have between 85 million and one hundred million land mines set and ready to explode. There are landmines laid in over 60 countries.
Cambodia has experienced what seems like eternal fighting between Khmer Ruge and the people in villages. Thousands of people are injured every day in this country from land mines alone.
Mines are often laid in a random fashion. Farms become abandoned because they are mined or the approaches are mined. Over 1/2 of Cambodia is now mined and uninhabitable.
TNT is one mine counterattack, and TNT has to be used to make sure the mine is completely destroyed. The Pol Pot Cultural Revolution killed over 1 million Cambodians from disease, starvations, disease and murder. The fall of the Khmer Ruge did not stop the fighting. The Khmer Ruge’s National Democratic Army weapons are supplied by the Chinese.
No one marks their mine fields when laying them. Mines are an effective terror weapon against civilians. Mines are often used to extract money from civilians. Anti-tank mines are used to go off by pressure from tanks normally, but can be set to go off from a villager’s cart hauling wood for heating and cooking.
It costs about $1,000 to find and destroy one mine. One mine costs only $3.50 to produce and set in Third World countries. Mine destroying is an expensive, slow and tedious process for each single mine. The mine removal teams in some countries must be alert from guerrilla actions and the work is very dangerous. Mine laying only takes a few minutes; a teen can arm and set a mine it is so simple.
Mines are used to keep the troops on the opposite side from moving. The deadliest mine around is the T-72 mine. One pulls the pin and buries the mine. In 5 minutes it arms. This particular mine has an anti-handling device inside. This means that if someone is searching for the mine and disturbs it from the side, it will go off. The mine is made by China Arms Industries, a huge arms manufacturer. The computer chip inside the mine is made in America by Motorola, but the company says it does not sell its chips knowingly to make mines like this.
Only about 1/2 of mine victims survive the blast. All of these victims then need a prosthetic device every two years. Women are left with no chance for marriage, and no support. Almost all mine victims end up being outcasts in their society and live by begging for their food, living homeless in cities or wherever they can find shelter.
All victims need training to even use the prosthetic limbs. Almost all victims will be in pain for the rest of their lives. The price of training and support is enormous and can really never be paid or afforded by Third World countries where these mines are set.

Rights group censures Iran for execution of minors Fri. 22 Jul 2005
Iran Focus
London, Jul. 22 – The human rights group Amnesty International today urged the Iranian government to put a halt to the execution of minors and individuals sentenced to death for crimes they committed as children.
The international rights group pointed to the execution of three such youths in the Islamic Republic in the past week despite the country being a signatory to the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which stipulate that individuals who committed offences while below the age of 18 should be spared from the death penalty.
In its statement, Amnesty International said, “So far this year, Iran has executed at least four persons for crimes committed when they were children including one who is still a child. Amnesty International has recorded 42 executions so far in 2005, but the true number could well be higher”.
“On 19 July 2005, an 18-year-old, identified only as A. M. and a minor, Mahmoud A, were publicly hanged in the north-eastern city of Mashhad. According to reports, they were convicted of sexual assault on a 13-year-old boy and had been detained 14 months ago. Prior to their execution, the two were also given 228 lashes each for drinking, disturbing the peace and theft”, Amnesty International stated.
“Prior to this, on 13 July 2005, Ali Safarpour Rajabi, aged 20, was hanged for killing Hamid Enshadi, a police officer in Poldokhtar. Amnesty International recorded his death sentence as having been passed in February 2002, when he was 17 years old, and believes his crime may have been committed when he was only 16 years old”, the rights group added.
Iran’s Islamic law permits boys above the age of 15 and girls above the age of nine to receive the capital punishment.
In January 2005, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child urged Iran "to suspend immediately the imposition and execution of all forms of torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, such as amputation, flogging or stoning, for crimes committed by persons under 18".
Please help those who like to change this miserable situation through peaceful democratic ways.In Iran little girls of the age 9 and boys of the age of 13 are considered adults.
We have reasons to believe that at the very moment another 30 youth are waiting to be hung.!

We the undersigned, endorse the following petition:
Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act
Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsor: Amnesty USA
DEADLINE: Ongoing ...
Every day, more than 700 women are abused or sexually assaulted by their partner - and four are murdered.
If Congress fails to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), these numbers could get a whole lot worse. With passage of VAWA in 1994, rates of domestic violence incidents have dropped by almost 50% and incidents of rape are down by 60%.
VAWA is up for reauthorization in September and we must send a loud and clear message that 700 women a day is 700 too many. Urge your Congressmember to reauthorize VAWA. It provides desperately needed shelter, counseling, medical, and justice services for the 700 women and children who are affected by domestic violence every single day in this country.
There is a good chance that VAWA could be cut. If it is, funding for domestic violence shelters is at risk. Children who witness domestic violence are at even greater risk. And, we may slow the progress that we've made in preventing violence against women.
Sign this petition to protect women and children.

Women's Call for Peace: An Urgent Appeal
We, the women of the United States, Iraq and women worldwide, have had enough of the senseless war in Iraq and the cruel attacks on civilians around the world. We've buried too many of our loved ones. We've seen too many lives crippled forever by physical and mental wounds. We've watched in horror as our precious resources are poured into war while our families' basic needs of food, shelter, education and healthcare go unmet. We've had enough of living in constant fear of violence and seeing the growing cancer of hatred and intolerance seep into our homes and communities.
This is not the world we want for ourselves or our children. With fire in our bellies and love in our hearts, we women are rising up - across borders - to unite and demand an end to the bloodshed and the destruction.
We have seen how the foreign occupation of Iraq has fueled an armed movement against it, perpetuating an endless cycle of violence. We are convinced that it is time to shift from a military model to a conflict-resolution model that includes the following elements:
- The withdrawal of all foreign troops and foreign fighters from Iraq;
- Negotiations to reincorporate disenfranchised Iraqis into all aspects of Iraqi society;
- The full representation of women in the peacemaking process and a commitment to women's full equality in the post-war Iraq;
- A commitment to discard plans for any foreign bases in Iraq;
- Iraqi control of its oil and other resources;
- The nullification of privatization and deregulation laws imposed under occupation, allowing Iraqis to shape the trajectory of the post-war economy;
- A massive reconstruction effort that prioritizes Iraqi contractors, and draws upon financial resources of the countries responsible for the invasion and occupation of Iraq;
- Consideration of a temporary international peacekeeping force that is truly multilateral and is not composed of any troops from countries that participated in the occupation.
To move this peace process forward, we are creating a massive movement of women - crossing generations, races, ethnicities, religions, borders and political persuasions. Together, we will pressure our governments, the United Nations, the Arab League, Nobel Peace Prize winners, religious leaders and others in the international community to step forward to help negotiate a political settlement. And in this era of divisive fundamentalisms, we call upon world leaders to join us in spreading the fundamental values of love for the human family and for our precious planet.
