Gorton's of Gloucester / Nissui January 16, 2006 10:06 PM
Who is Gorton's?
With total annual sales in the hundreds of millions of dollars, Gorton's of Gloucester is the market leader in frozen seafood products in the US.
We asked Gorton's in December 2005, as a responsible company and one that promotes whale watching on its website, to help bring an end to the hunt, and apply pressure to their parent company to get out of the business of whaling. Thousands of you wrote to Gorton's and told them how you felt about this. Thanks to all of you who helped get the message across that whaling is bad for business!
We are definitely making progress. Since we launched this campaign, Gorton's has gone from publicly denying any connection to whaling [ "Neither Gorton's or its parent company Nippon Suisan [Nissui] participates in whaling, nor do we have any connections to the activities described in the "EIA report..."] to publicly stating their opposition to whaling of any kind and sharing that position with the Chairman of Nissui.
To put it politely, we were pretty surprised by the initial Gorton's statement. There is not the slightest doubt Nippon Suisan is involved in whaling and that this whaling produces over 50 million US dollars worth of whale meat every year which is sold on the open market in Japan. And the Gorton's link to Nippon Suisan is clear - you can see the diagram here.
We opened up the comments section of our weblog post for Gorton's to talk to us ... so far, no reply...
Targeting companies linked to Gorton's parent Nissui does work - an Argentine seafood brand and major Nissui customer has stopped buying from Nissui subsidiaries until the company gets out of the whaling business. We are certain that this victory is just the first in a long line of companies that will want to distance themselves from Nissui and whaling.
