Can't believe the criticism November 07, 2006 12:05 AM
i live in Melbourne, Australia, where attachment parenting is receiving a very bad rap at the moment. There was an incredibly biased segment on a popular current affairs program, where they went as far as saying that it was "irresponsible", and even negligent!! What a load of crap!! Then tonight, i just saw part of an episode of a popular soapie ("Neighbours") where it was bagged, and controlled crying was pushed all the way!! talk about unbalanced - sorry but i am so furious right now. maybe i'll write a letter to the appropriate people who are responsible...

I just wrote a letter this morning to a TV station here in Israel, not about what you're talking about, but because of a totally inappropriate ad for a TV show that was full of adult and borderline pornographic content and images on daytime TV. My kids saw it and it was potentially very corruptive. I urge you to write that letter! Make your voice heard!
What aspects of attachment parenting were they blasting?
That's just it, they picked out some of the "extreme" aspects of it, like breastfeeding a five year old and elimination communication (infant toilet training), and made out like that's attachment parenting - like every attachment parenting parent does these. And there was a family that had two beds for the children and adults (a form of co-sleeping). The child psychologist who was very "anti-AP" said that that was like 'elevating the child to partner status' - as if letting the child sleep beside you automatically means that you are now talking to them and relating to them like your partner?!
