A: WHAT IS MAYORS FOR PEACE February 08, 2006 6:50 AM

Hello to All!

What is the Mayors for Peace?
In August 1945, atomic bombs instantaneously reduced the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to rubble, taking hundreds of thousands of precious lives. Today, more than fifty years after the war, thousands of citizens still suffer the devastating aftereffects of radiation and unfathomable emotional pain. To prevent any repetition of the A-bomb tragedy, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have continually sought to tell the world about the inhumane cruelty of nuclear weapons and have consistently urged that nuclear weapons be abolished.

On June 24, 1982, at the 2nd UN Special Session on Disarmament held at UN Headquarters in New York, then Mayor Takeshi Araki of Hiroshima proposed a new Program to Promote the Solidarity of Cities toward the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. This proposal offered cities a way to transcend national borders and work together to press for nuclear abolition. Subsequently, the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki called on mayors around the world to support this program.

The Mayors for Peace is composed of cities around the world that have formally expressed support for the program Mayor Araki announced in 1982. As of March 22, 2005, membership stood at 763 cities in 110 countries and regions. In March 1990, the Mayors Conference was officially registered as a UN NGO related to the Department of Public Information. In May 1991, it became a Category II NGO(currently called a NGO in "Special Consultative Status") registered with the Economic and Social Council.

As of January 27, 2006, membership stood at 1,285 cities in 115 countries and regions.

Here you can take a look and check if ur own city or neighbouring city is already a member city of Mayors for Peace.

TO THE EDITOR:

My name is Jackie Ryan. I’m 11 years old and I live in Westwood, Massachusetts. I am writing an essay about why we should NOT have nuclear bombs in the world. I picked my topic because I want our country to be safe. I don’t want anyone in the world to be hurt or killed. I want you to read my letter because I want to persuade you to send my opinion on to other people so that I can persuade a lot of people that we should not have nuclear bombs in the world. I need your help to persuade other people in the world that Nuclear Bombs should be illegal.

I would appreciate any help that you could give me to persuade other people in the world that Nuclear Bombs are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and they should be illegal for EVERY COUNTRY in the world. And if one person agrees with me, then maybe soon everybody will.

Thank you very, very much for all of your help and for your time.

Letter: Nuclear Bombs

Thursday, March 23, 2006

Imagine that your country is fighting in a war. An atomic bomb has been dropped. Can you picture this happening to YOU? This bomb is extremely dangerous. How would you feel if this happened to you? We should not have nuclear bombs because they kill to many innocent people, animals, and believe it or not they kill the environment. What would you do?

There are thousands of innocent people who could die because of just one bomb. Just imagine what it would be like to have a bomb dropped on your country. Do you know how many innocent people died during Hiroshima? There were 150,000 INNOCENT people. And a lot more people died years after the bomb was dropped.

Even people 20 miles away from the explosion might die immediately. People who are even further out will die eventually from the radiation. That's how bad this bomb can be. Some people don't realize how bad these weapons are. This explosion spreads extremely fast and you can't even see it spreading. It's so horrible. Did you know that the Hiroshima bomb was dropped but you couldn't even see it spreading. This bomb killed so many innocent people. There are babies, animals, teachers, doctors, lawyers, kids and other people who will die and have nothing to do with the war. Why would someone want to kill so many innocent people?

Radiation will kill people eventually. It has been said that even if you don't get killed from the explosion you might get another different injury, sickness, or a disease. Some of these injuries will never go away and that is just horrible to live with. Here are some examples of the bad injuries or illnesses you could get: Cancer, scrapes and burns, seeing spots, blindness, vomiting, rashes, hair falling out in clumps, your skin will start to peel off, or you might have an intense thirst. Can you imagine having any of these injuries? I couldn't. Think back and wonder what it was like for most of the people with these injuries and illnesses.

These explosions cause winds like tornadoes. They will reach velocities of hundreds of miles an hour near the epicenter of the blast and will reach velocities of 70 miles per hour as far as 6 miles from the blast. The high winds and flying debris will cause shrapnel-type wounds and blunt-trauma injuries. Some of the people who haven't died from a nuclear explosion will die many years later from the widespread release of the radioactive material spread into the environment. All of these deaths will happen ALL over the world for more centuries to come. There are many random deaths everywhere and a lot of cancer, leukemia, and many more major heath effects.

Nuclear bombs have and will destroy the environment so quickly there will be nothing left. These bombs can destroy so many things that you need to live. You may not realize that some things in the world keep you alive everyday. Imagine everything that keeps you alive everyday gone. How would you survive? This bomb can destroy the environment in a flash. If a nuclear bomb is dropped, it will destroy the grass so all you have to walk on is dirt. It will also destroy the land, the air (etc.) you can't produce food, liquids, daily medicine, clothing and more. Fires will start in random places. The sparks will scatter in different directions. So you have no idea where a fire will start. During U.S. nuclear attacks on Japan, two entire cities were erased from the earth. Do you know how many people died from that? So many people, animals, trees, and flowers in cities. So, imagine New York and Boston erased. So many people live in New York and Boston. When this bomb is dropped, a mushroom cloud appears. When a mushroom cloud forms it blocks the sun, and the weather. So that makes animals suffer, people suffer, plants suffer, and more. You don't get any weather, imagine that. Nothing, no weather - its like weather has disappeared. Soon the mushroom cloud will go away. But also pollution will still be around in the air.

Can you imagine this happening to you? No weather, no animals, no food, no drinks, no homes, and even no families. Can you imagine living like that? I don't think so. And when that bomb drops you can't take it back. So if you are planning on dropping a bomb ... think about how many people, animals, trees, flowers (etc.) you are killing. Your family could be killed and even YOU could be killed. That would be horrible, so that's why nuclear bombs should be illegal in the United States.

So, if you agree with me, you are making the right choice. And for those of you who disagree with me, how would YOU like to be killed? How would you like your country to be ruined? How would you like this happening to someone you know and love? And if I still haven't persuaded you, think about it and make the right choice, because there is a wrong answer.

If you are planning to write a letter to the senator, congressman, officials, newspaper or media outlet who are in favour for using nuclear weapons in pre-emptive ways against other countries, why not send yr message or letter together with Jackie's letter. It was wonderful effort from her to write to the editor and be published. Cold war is over but nuclear weapons are still here.

Jackie did it. I think she would like us Pay forward. I think her essay and letter are worth to be published in the main media and read by the Presidents and Prime Ministers of the world publicly!! wouldn't it be great? if not Bush, maybe next best Candidates!

Hey Jouni,

thanks for the invite and here I am.

The letter ought to be published mainstream.

I also completely support the aim and objective of this group.

Lets keep  fighting the good fight, its frustrating and so hard , but hey our home[earth] is being violated and is at a huge risk for further dfacing.

Why do politicians forget they are elected because of the individuald in their country. the minute they have power, they start using it like the country and the environment is their backyard personal playground.

I dislike hypocrites!!!!!!

Focus November 17, 2007 11:40 AM

"What you resist, persists;
What you adore becomes more."

In other words:

What you say, what you focus on, you add energy to.

Gandhi knew this.

My humble advice...If you want to promote what you're saying you want to promote:

Watch the language. Watch your thoughts. Every "negative" thought generates more negative energy. Likewise, Every "positive thought" generates more positive energy. So... Leave 'em with a positive thought.

(i.e., "STOP WAR" Leaves the idea of war in the mind of the beholder. "STOP TERRORISM" Leaves them with the idea of terrorism in mind. "STOP TORTURE" Leaves them with the idea of torture in mind.)

You catch my drift.

If you want to be a beacon of TRUE POWER, (promote not what you don't want; rather PROMOTE WHAT YOU, HERE, ARE ALL GEARED-UP FOR CREATING.

You have the right idea to MAKE PEACE. GOOD.

LOOK AT THE REST OF THE STUFF. FIX IT.

Now, as for Who I AM and what I AM about:

Very sensitive individual who feels energy very strongly.

As soon as I joined this group, I was FIRED UP to say what I have said and "get out of Dodge" ~ the energy I found simply clicking on this group, has given me a headache.

Thanks for the invite, but I must, regretfully, decline. If you desire my input, then please clean-up the energy and invite me again.

Namaste

Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign January 20, 2008 2:22 PM

Hi,

It is great to find out Mayors for Peace is a topic here. Today over 2,000 cities in 126 countries have joined. The movement is growing thanks to the energy and involvement of common people organising peace.

I have been working with Mayors for Peace 2020 VIsion Campaign since 2006. A brief introduction to the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign:

The "2020 Vision Campaign" was launched by the Executive Conference of Mayors for Peace in 2003 under impuls of Tadatoshi Akiba, the Mayor of Hiroshima and President of Mayors for Peace. The campaign aims complete nuclear disarmament by 2020 pressing the Nuclear Weapon States to agree to a Nuclear Weapons Convention. Since the launch of the campaign membership has quadrupled. Today over 2,000 member cities in 126 countries. As the 2005 NPT Review Conference ended in a failure Mayors for Peace is now Preparing for the Decisive Decade for Nuclear Disarmament (2010 - 2020).

During the next years we will have an increasing presence in the UN disarmament process and at the latest by August 2010 we are committed to launch the long awaited process towards complete nuclear disarmament. The next months and years we will therefore put a main focus to further capacity building. We plan further growth as an organisation with an average of 1 new member/day. We started fundraising to increase our staff and will pay more attention to communications and press.

Anybody willing to find out more and wanting to get involved can contact us. You can check our campaign website www.2020visioncampaign.org

Best wishes,

Pol
