Europeans, speak out for the animal welfare! November 14, 2005 1:35 PM

The European Commission is currently preparing a Community Action Plan on Animal Welfare and Protection which will outline planned initiatives in this area for the coming years. It is very important that such initiatives take into account the views of citizens and so this internet consultation is being organised to collect information on public attitudes to the welfare and protection of farmed animals. Please note that the questionnaire is based on a multiple-choice format and should not take more than 10 minutes to complete. Merci, Micheline.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

PLEASE! Petition:Sonar vs. Whales, marine mammals Friday, 2:17 PM
PLEASE - this needs your immediate action!
The NRDC has put up a petition to stop the emerging threat to whales and other marine mammals. The U.S. Navy wants to put a testing ground for lethal mid-frequency sonar along the migratory path of highly endangered northern right whales, off the coast of North Carolina.
Please act today to protect the whales and other marine life of this offshore refuge from a year-round barrage of deadly, ear-splitting noise.
to urge the Navy to consider alternatives - less sensitive locations for its sonar training range.

Further Info from the NRDC:
As the site of more than 160 exercises annually, the Navy's proposed testing range would create a 500-square-mile hub of year-round sonar activity and other intense underwater noise. The range would lie along the migratory route of endangered right whales, fewer than 400 of which are believed to exist today.
Just one year ago, 37 whales of three different species beached themselves on the shores of the Outer Banks, near the proposed testing range, following Navy sonar exercises in the area. Scientists have linked the use of high-intensity sonar to numerous other mass strandings of whales around the globe, from the Bahamas to the Canary Islands to Japan. Yet, incredibly, the Navy's analysis of its proposed testing range does not even mention, much less thoroughly examine, this stranding.
Beached whales have been found bleeding around their brains and ears after encounters with this lethal technology. Military sonar may also be interfering with the ability of these majestic creatures to locate food, avoid predators and mate.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

We undersigned strongly urge the City Council, the Mayor and Citizens to take steady steps to join Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision and stating that the City and Citizens support the Program to Promote the Solidarity of Cities toward the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons.

The Mayors for Peace is composed of cities around the world that have formally expressed support for the program Mayor Araki announced in 1982. As of May 26, 2005, membership stood at 1,036 cities in 112 countries and regions, and as of March 9, 2006, membership stood at 1,306 cities in 115 countries and regions.

On June 24, 1982, at the 2nd UN Special Session on Disarmament held at UN Headquarters in New York, then Mayor Takeshi Araki of Hiroshima proposed a new Program to Promote the Solidarity of Cities toward the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. This proposal offered cities a way to transcend national borders and work together to press for nuclear abolition. Subsequently, the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki called on mayors around the world to support this program that is known today as 2020 Vision.

It is the duty of Mayors, City Councils and Citizens all over the world together to protect children, future generations, from nuclear holocausts and get rid of severe mental stress that has plagued well-being, dialogue and relationships tens of years.

(Fear of nuclear war increases the risk of common mental disorders among young adults: a five-year follow-up study

Of one Essence is the human race,
Thusly has Creation put the Base;
One Limb impacted is sufficient,
For all Others to feel the Mace.

Poet Saadi Shirazi/Hall of Nations, New York

A human being is part of the whole, called by us "universe," a part limited in time and space. He/She experiences his/her thoughts and feeling as something separate from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his/her consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal decisions and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

See that Justice is Served in Jacksonville Regarding Pastor Vincent Kohn’s Cruelty to Animals.
Please be sure you've signed and cross post widely.
Petition Created 02/24/06, Deadline 04-01-06!
Case Details
Puppies Dumped at Roadside by Local Pastor
Jacksonville, FL USA

Date: Feb 5, 2006
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged Abuser: Vincent Kohn

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A Springfield pastor was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after a witness told police he saw the pastor throwing puppies from a pickup truck, according to a report.

Robert Tiencken said he saw Vincent Kohn, pastor of The Anointed Church of God, throwing several puppies into the woods and leaving them to die.

"He was actually throwing them, not setting them down, but throwing them as far as the trees. Just chucking them," Tiencken said. "He said, 'I told my wife. You don't have to call the police. You don't have to call them.'"

Tiencken called the police anyway.

The detectives who tracked down Kohn said they found the malnourished mother of the puppies chained-up at Kohn's home along with four or five more puppies that had no food or water, according to the news report.

The dogs are now being cared for at animal control.

Many of the abused puppies had lost patches of fur and some were covered with sores hidden beneath their fur.

Local media wanted to give the pastor a chance to speak for himself, but when reporter Jennifer Waugh arrived at Kohn's home, a livid man pulled into the driveway and started yelling, cursing, and threatening to sue the station.

"Any footage that y'all put on the news that shows you was past the property line, just know y'all going to get it," said the irate man.

He then sped away in reverse, nearly hitting an on coming vehicle. It was unclear if the man knew Kohn.

Kohn has been charged with abandonment and cruelty to animals with unnecessary suffering.

"I just wonder what his parishioners are going to think. It's just unbelievable," Tiencken said. "Just to haul buggy and leave them on the coldest night. It's just terrible."

Help Save South African Primates 11:14 AM

Original Message:

from my friend Karin S.

To my animal Care2 friends,cutefaceold.jpg

Having just received an alert about the Cape Fur seal from Kym, I do want to add my concerns again about South African legislation and ask you all to please publicise the petition about S.A wildlife so we can collect more signatures.

With legislation now being redrafted to fit in with the N.E.M.B.A (national environmental management biodiversity act) guidelines, it’s important for all species that we act now. The N.E.M.B Act is a broad outline which calls for biodiversity. Species such as the Cape Fur Seal would therefore be offered more protection if legislation is redrafted according to the N.E.M.B.A guidelines and those who work hands on to fight for individuals and species are brought in to the process to change laws. I know most or all of you have signed but if possible please do forward this info.

Personally as an animal rights activist, I believe that animal rights in a necessity to saving our planet and all inhabitants. This is why my profile suggests we need to move from an anthropocentric world view (where we see humans as central – above all other species) towards a biocentric world view (where we see our human species as one amongst all others). This means that our so-called conservation actions would not serve people as first priority often at the expense of other species. Non-human animals would not be seen as 'resources". However the enormous division between animal rightists and conservationists is a major obstacle in our common fight. Those who are presently redrafting our hunting legislation for example, are on the whole, big “game” (what kind of a word is that?) hunters themselves and will no doubt re-arrange scientific theory to justify their continuous eradication of species and individual animals.

The following picture I recently took on the land we live  – it shows a tiny sliver of the damage done here due to what the laws allow. I live in The Western Cape where baboons are allowed to be shot all year round, sitting targets in trees at night, with traps, dogs….there is no limitation on how many one can shoot.

Having observed the troops here for the last four years I have not only witnessed the killing of individuals but serious damage to troop structures - adult males are mostly targeted. As a result most troops here have only one adult male to about 15 adult females – a fact that causes a ripple effect of damage throughout the troop.
We need more signatures for the following petition so please do publicise this further.
Thank you ALL for all the alerts you send my way. With support in our common cause as always,

Addressed to the D.E.A.T. and C.N.C, we are asking for all interested parties to be invited to engage in workshops while provincial legislation is redrafted to meet with N.E.M.B.A requirements.
We need laws that will protect all free roaming species before it's too late. Please sign and comment on this urgent petition that calls for an adequate consultative process to bring about the utmost protection and health of biodiversity as required by the N.E.M.B.Act.

Acheter du sexe n'est pas un sport March 30, 2006 12:34 AM

Petition : ACHETER DU SEXE N’EST PAS UN SPORT. [ send green star]  [ accepted]

child in povertyWal-Mart has repeatedly violated U.S. child labor laws and profited from overseas child labor abuses.

A recent investigation revealed children, some only 11 years old, were making Wal-Mart clothes in a Bangladesh factory. The children report being routinely slapped and beaten, forced to work 12 to 14 hours a day, often seven days a week, for wages as low as 6 and a half cents an hour.

In the United States, Wal-Mart's own internal audit found 1,371 instances in which minors worked too late at night, during school hours, or too many hours in a day. It also found 60,767 instances of workers missing breaks and 15,705 instances where employees were forced to work and miss meal times.

Despite all of this, Wal-Mart refuses to adopt a zero tolerance policy on child labor! Our children deserve better from Wal-Mart. This holiday season, tell Wal-Mart to adopt a zero tolerance policy on child labor.

Much of the experimentation-including pumping chemicals into rats' stomachs, hacking muscle tissue from dogs' thighs, and putting baby monkeys in isolation chambers far from their mothers-is paid for by you, the American taxpayer and consumer.
What have we learned from all of this suffering? That animal research is inherently unethical, inevitably wasteful, and wholly unreliable. The U.S. squanders approximately $18 billion per year on animal experiments, even though alternatives are less expensive and can be used repeatedly.
